Amazon.com’s (AMZN) second quarter earnings beat the Zacks consensus by one cent. Revenue for the period was $4.6 billion, down 4.9% sequentially and up 14.5% year over year. Revenue was within management’s guidance range of $4.30-4.75 billion (down 2.8% to 12.0% sequentially). Approximately 53% of sales were generated in North America, which declined 4.9% sequentially and grew 13.1% year over year. The balance came from the International segment, which declined 4.8% sequentially and grew 16.1% year over year. The year-over-year increase in North America revenue was driven by the Electronics and General Merchandise (EGM) business, which increased 29%. The North American media business was flat overall, although there were pockets of weakness in video games and video games consoles that were offset by increase in books.
