For the third quarter of 2009, total passenger traffic declined year-over-year by 13.86%. International passenger traffic declined 19.01% while domestic passenger traffic declined by 8.36%. Recently, Novartis AG (NVS) announced that it has received a Complete Response Letter (CRL) for QAB149 (indacaterol) − a bronchodilator for the treatment of adults suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) − from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The US agency has asked for additional information on the proposed dosing of the drug. Novartis had filed for the US approval of the drug in December last year.  Last month, the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) recommended the approval of QAB149 in the European Union to treat COPD patients as a once-daily therapy with two doses (150 micrograms and 300 micrograms). The positive opinion from the CHMP is a boost to Novartis as it aims to be a strong player in the field of respiratory medicine. The vaccine unit of Sanofi-Aventis (SNY), Sanofi Pasteur, stated the effectiveness of a single dose of influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccines – Panenza (15 mcg dose, non-adjuvanted) and Humenza (3.8 mcg dose, adjuvanted) in children and adults.  It was observed from the results of a clinical trial held in Europe that the vaccine induced protection in 93% adults aged 18 to 59 years old and in 83% adults aged 60 years and above. In case of children aged 3 -17 years, 94% of the participants achieved protective antibody response.  Earlier in September, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the long anticipated first "swine flu" vaccine. Skinvisible, Inc., a pharmaceutical research and development company, announced that the company has entered into an exclusive license agreement with Mayquest Pharmaceuticals Pte. This license agreement grants Skinvisible the exclusive rights for the product Dermsafe in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Dermsafe is a patented antimicrobial hand sanitizer lotion proven to kill the H1N1 swine flu virus.

Under the terms of this agreement, Mayquest is to pay an upfront license fee in milestones for the exclusive manufacturing and marketing right. Skinvisible will also receive on-going royalties derived from product sales.

In a major achievement towards vaccinating people against the H1N1 virus, yesterday the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the long anticipated new "swine flu" vaccine. The approval is for four pharmaceutical companies -- Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccine division of Sanofi-Aventis (SNY), Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics Limited, the vaccine and diagnostics arm of Novartis (NVS), MedImmune LLC, a subsidiary of AstraZeneca (AZN) and CSL Limited of Australia. Another company that is in the race to produce the vaccine, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), has yet to gain approval. The first batch of the vaccine is expected to be available in another four weeks. Although the US government has ordered 195 million doses, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expects about 45 million initially by mid-October.
