Qualcomm Reports Mixed Results – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 5th, 2009) Writes:
Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) reported mixed financial results for its fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. Quarterly revenue of $2.69 billion was down 19% year-over-year and was down 2% sequentially. This was primarily due to lower sales of the company’s wireless chipsets and other related technologies. Fourth quarter revenue was also below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.71 billion. On a GAAP basis, quarterly net income was $803 million or 48 cents per share. This was down 9% year-over-year and also down 9% sequentially. Fourth quarter adjusted (excluding special items) EPS was also 48 cents, above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 46 cents. Quarterly operating income was $597 million, down 55% year-over-year and down 33% sequentially. China, India Look Big for Harman – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 12th, 2009) Writes:
Harman International Industries Incorporated (HAR) is seeing significant growth opportunities in Asian markets, particularly China and India. President, Chairman and CEO Dinesh C Paliwal recently stated that the company expects its earnings from China to exceed $1 billion over the next five years. Revenue from India is expected to reach $250 million during the same time period.  Management also announced the opening of a new R&D center in the Huang Pu commercial district of Shanghai yesterday, which is expected to complement its existing manufacturing facilities in Suzhou and Shenzhen. We think this is an effective way of reducing costs, as R&D engineers typically command higher pay than manufacturing personnel. The company’s current workforce in China is approximately 1000.  Simultaneously, the company launched its latest generation, scalable automotive infotainment system, which has been designed over the past year in Asia, Europe and the US. The product will ...

Exodus from WiMAX Continues – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 2nd, 2009) Writes:
The much-hyped next-generation (4G) technology of WiMAX is quickly losing ground to the alternative technology of Long-Term Evolution (LTE). Large telecom infrastructure equipment makers are gradually shifting from WiMAX to LTE, and as a result the WiMAX field is getting less crowded day by day.

This gives the smaller gear makers like PureWave Networks and Airspan Networks a chance to enter the WiMAX market.

Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) has scaled back its WiMAX R&D expenditures and now concentrates only on fixed WiMAX infrastructure deployment, rather than the complex mobile deployment. Nokia-Siemens Network, a joint venture of Nokia Corp. (NOK) and Siemens AG (SI), has taken a strategic decision to shift its focus to other next-generation wireless technologies, such as LTE and HSPA+, and decided to outsource the WiMAX technology from Alvarion Ltd. (ALVR). Fujitsu Ltd. has entirely stopped the development of WiMAX radio technology. Motorola (MOT) is also

Alvarion Good News Continues – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (July 6th, 2009) Writes:
Good news is continuing for Alvarion Ltd. (ALVR), a Tel Aviv, Israel-based pure-play WiMAX service provider. Recent rumors within the broadband industry suggest a deal between Alvarion and Nokia-Siemens Network (NSN) for customer WiMAX deployment.NSN is a joint venture between Nokia Corp. (NOK) and Siemens AG (SI). According to industry sources, NSN has taken a strategic decision to shift its focus to other next-generation (4G) wireless technologies like LTE and HSPA+.However, in order to offer a bunch of 4G networks to its customers, NSN has decided to keep WiMAX in its portfolio and will outsource this technology from specialist WiMAX developers. Alvarion appears to be the most probable candidate. The agreement will be a boon to Alvarion if it materializes, especially after its failed agreement with currently bankrupt Nortel Networks.During June 2009, Alvarion ...
