Telefonica (TEF) reported third-quarter 2009 results with earnings per ADS of US$1.88, comfortably beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of US$1.49. The Spanish telecom giant reported net income of €1.99 billion (US$2.85 billion), down 0.6% year over year, due to lower sales as a result of the beleaguered economy, especially in Spain. Revenue Consolidated revenue fell 5.7% year over year to €14.1 billion (US$20.2 billion). Revenue was impacted by weak contributions from domestic and European markets due to the recession. Latin America contributed 40% of the group revenues followed by Spain at 35% and Europe at 25%. Cincinnati Bell (CBB) announced third quarter results with adjusted earnings per share of 11 cents, falling short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny. However, this was above the year-ago EPS of 10 cents.   Adjusted EPS excludes special items such as restructuring charges, loss on disposal of assets and gain on extinguishment of debt. Net income increased 4% year over year to $28 million while revenue fell 3% from the prior-year quarter to $338 million as a result of the declines across wireline and wireless segments.   Wireline Segment   The company reported wireline revenues of $191 million down 5% from the year-ago quarter. The reported revenue surpassed management guidance of revenue growth at 5%–10%.  The revenue growth was driven by a boost in the company’s 3G wireless products as well as an earlier than expected recovery in both cable TV and WLAN revenues. Cable set-top box products increased and wireless LAN products jumped 65% sequentially.  Gross margin improved significantly to 24.4% from 10.7% in the previous quarter primarily due to the increased revenue, higher factory utilization and improved yields. Operating expenses increased by $600,000 to $15 million from last quarter on higher R&D cost attributable to new products. The company reported net income of $19.5 million for the quarter compared to $7.5 million reported in the year-ago quarter driven by 8% year over year decline in operating expenses.
