Motorola Inc. (MOT) has decided to purchase iDEN base station assets of the privately held RadioFrame Networks Inc. The iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network) technology allows cell phone calls to move on the same network as communication from two-way radios. In general, this technology resembles walkie-talkie features on cell phones. Financial terms of this deal have not been disclosed so far. Motorola itself is the pioneer of the iDEN technology that RadioFrame had licensed for its base station products.   The main reason for this acquisition is the superior iDEN-based base station products of RadioFrame that are lower cost and more power efficient. China Telecom (CHA), the largest Chinese fixed-line operator, has revealed plans to augment its wireless handset portfolio. The company is currently in talks with overseas handset vendors and targets to offer Research in Motion's (RIMM) popular BlackBerry handset and Palm’s (PALM) smartphones in China in late 2009 or early 2010. This move represents a part of China Telecom’s efforts to boost its share in the domestic wireless space.  China Telecom is the market leader in fixed-line phone services in one of the world’s fastest growing telecom markets. Qwest Communications (Q) has released its capital expenditure (CapEx) guidance for 2010. The local and long-distance telephone service provider expects its CapEX to remain at par with the estimated 2009 level of $1.7 billion.      Qwest continues to invest in building necessary infrastructure to boost network capacity and availability. Historically, the company has allocated a major portion of the overall CapEx in deploying additional fiber-to-the-node (“FTTN") capacity to increase the performance of its broadband network. Yesterday, Crown Castle International Corp. (CCI), a leading wireless tower operator in the U.S. and Australia , raised its third quarter fiscal 2009 financial outlook. Management stated that its Site rental revenue and Adjusted EBITDA will beat the company’s prior estimate. Earlier, Crown Castle predicted that the Site rental revenue during the third quarter will approximate within a range of $385 million-$390 million. Adjusted EBITDA is forecasted in the $246 million-$251 million range. The company will report third quarter 2009 financial results on Nov 3.  We believe the primary reason for this upward revision of financial estimate is the increasing deployments of 3G/4G high-speed mobile voice, data, and video technology.
