Motorola Boosts iDEN Business – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 23rd, 2009) Writes:
Motorola Inc. (MOT) has decided to purchase iDEN base station assets of the privately held RadioFrame Networks Inc. The iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network) technology allows cell phone calls to move on the same network as communication from two-way radios. In general, this technology resembles walkie-talkie features on cell phones. Financial terms of this deal have not been disclosed so far. Motorola itself is the pioneer of the iDEN technology that RadioFrame had licensed for its base station products.   The main reason for this acquisition is the superior iDEN-based base station products of RadioFrame that are lower cost and more power efficient. This proposed acquisition will enhance Motorola's portfolio of multi-channel base stations products that are optimized to support non-contiguous spectrum allocations in the special mobile radio business. Motorola may use RadioFrame’s lower-cost iDEN architecture into entirely separated spectrum bands that are allocated to the wireless ...

CHA Boosts Handset Portfolio – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 23rd, 2009) Writes:
China Telecom (CHA), the largest Chinese fixed-line operator, has revealed plans to augment its wireless handset portfolio. The company is currently in talks with overseas handset vendors and targets to offer Research in Motion's (RIMM) popular BlackBerry handset and Palm’s (PALM) smartphones in China in late 2009 or early 2010. This move represents a part of China Telecom’s efforts to boost its share in the domestic wireless space.  China Telecom is the market leader in fixed-line phone services in one of the world’s fastest growing telecom markets. Being one of the incumbent telecom operators in China, the company is well positioned to benefit from the country’s rapid economic growth coupled with aggressive wireless expansion.  With roughly 700 million subscribers, China is the largest wireless market in the world. China Telecom added mobile operation to its service offering in October 2008 through its acquisition of China ...

Qwest Updates CapEx Plan – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 21st, 2009) Writes:
Qwest Communications (Q) has released its capital expenditure (CapEx) guidance for 2010. The local and long-distance telephone service provider expects its CapEX to remain at par with the estimated 2009 level of $1.7 billion.      Qwest continues to invest in building necessary infrastructure to boost network capacity and availability. Historically, the company has allocated a major portion of the overall CapEx in deploying additional fiber-to-the-node (“FTTN") capacity to increase the performance of its broadband network. Moving forward, Qwest plans to increase spending on deployment of fiber optic cable to support wireless services.   The company recently introduced a new fiber-based Ethernet backhaul wholesale service for wireless operators. The service (called Qwest Mobile Ethernet Backhaul) leverages Qwest’s FTTN network to extend fiber connections to cellular sites. This will enable wireless operators to upgrade their existing copper-based wireless backhaul networks to faster fiber optic connections, which will expand capacity ...

Crown Castle Raises Guidance – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 21st, 2009) Writes:
Yesterday, Crown Castle International Corp. (CCI), a leading wireless tower operator in the U.S. and Australia , raised its third quarter fiscal 2009 financial outlook. Management stated that its Site rental revenue and Adjusted EBITDA will beat the company’s prior estimate. Earlier, Crown Castle predicted that the Site rental revenue during the third quarter will approximate within a range of $385 million-$390 million. Adjusted EBITDA is forecasted in the $246 million-$251 million range. The company will report third quarter 2009 financial results on Nov 3.  We believe the primary reason for this upward revision of financial estimate is the increasing deployments of 3G/4G high-speed mobile voice, data, and video technology. It has become imperative for carriers to improve network quality, and coverage, in order to minimize customer churn. Increased wireless coverage, by using more tower space, is one of the major initiatives that carriers take to improve transmission quality. ...

AT&T Unveils New Pre-Paid Plan – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 12th, 2009) Writes:
AT&T (T) has introduced a new unlimited monthly calling plan for the prepaid wireless market. Starting today, customers subscribing to the company prepaid wireless services receive unlimited voice calls, instant messaging as well as text, picture and video messaging for just $60 a month. However, the plan does not cover iPhone users. Apart from the U.S., the new unlimited plan covers Mexico, Canada and over 100 countries worldwide. Roaming within the U.S. is free of cost. This prepaid rate plan is about 50% lower than the company’s regular postpaid unlimited (voice and text) service plan. AT&T offers its prepaid services under the "GoPhone" brand, which does not require the customer to sign long-term contracts and keep a minimum deposit. While the company remains a dominant player in the postpaid market (representing 86% of the company’s total net customer additions), it is struggling to retain customers in ...

Moody’s Upgrades American Tower – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 6th, 2009) Writes:
Moody’s Investor Services (MCO) has upgraded the rating of American Tower Corp’s (AMT) senior unsecured debt. So far, this paper has been given a “Ba1" rating by Moody’s which implies a junk corporate rating and probability of default rating. Now Moody’s has raised its rating to “Baa3," implying its lowest investment-grade rating. Major reasons for this debt rating upgrade were the company’s strong operating performance, increased cash flow and reduced debt over the past two years. American Tower accounts for most of its revenue from long-term (typically 5-10 year) tower leases with major wireless carriers. In addition, the company provides on-site maintenance and servicing of antennas, amplifiers and base-station equipment as it relates to leasing. This generates a strong long-term lease up-cycle. The revenue generated from leasing and management of such networks is impressive, and over 95% is recurring in nature. Yearly revenue increased ...

Qwest Unveils New Ethernet Service – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 18th, 2009) Writes:
Qwest Communications (Q) introduced a new fiber-based Ethernet backhaul wholesale service for wireless operators. The service is called Qwest Mobile Ethernet Backhaul, which leverages the company’s fiber-to-the-node (“FTTN") network (currently used for residential broadband service) to extend fiber connections to cellular sites. This will offer the wireless operators a major upgrade from their existing copper-based wireless backhaul networks.   Cellular operators across North America are aggressively investing to replace their copper connections to faster fiber optic connections. Approximately 75% of backhaul connections are on copper in North America, thereby creating a significant bottleneck in supporting increasing data traffic on next-generation wireless networks. Tier-1 carriers such as AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) have started to upgrade their cell sites to fiber as they prepare for 4G wireless service deployments.           Mobile Ethernet Backhaul service is tailor made to fit the requirements of the wireless service ...
