Omnicity Corp. (OMCY.OB) Riding the Broadband Wave

QualityStocks (November 17th, 2009) Writes:

Omnicity Corp., known for bringing wireless broadband services to rural America, is on top of one of the biggest waves in telecommunications, the rapid expansion of broadband services outside of the traditional urban and suburban base areas.

It goes without saying that the communications industry is the nervous system of today’s economy, generating global annual revenues of nearly $2 trillion. North America remains the largest telecommunications market, with revenues of over $½ trillion. Much of this, of course, is due to the continued growth of the Internet. Worldwide, there are now nearly 1½ billion Internet users. Data-intensive Internet applications such as Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) and video are key drivers in the telecommunication industry’s growth, providing increased demand for high-speed broadband capabilities.

The number of broadband connections is increasing rapidly as vendors and consumers require the ability to share large files, download

Newport Digital Technologies, Inc.’s (NPDT.OB) Superior WiMAX Solutions

QualityStocks (November 10th, 2009) Writes:

Newport Digital Technologies Inc., in collaboration with the Information Industry Institute (III) of Taiwan, has become a leading global provider of solutions for WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access). WiMAX is a wireless communications technology (also known as IEEE 802.16) that essentially extends the benefits of wireless broadband beyond WiFi hotspots, which normally only reach 100-300 feet, to wide areas (up to 30 miles for fixed stations, and 3-10 miles for mobile stations). This means that superior connectivity is now available to more people in urban and even rural environments.

WiMAX combines high data rates with greater scalability, lower costs, and reduced network complexity, making it easier to deploy and operate than standard mobile wireless data solutions. It provides a compelling alternative to cable and DSL, opening up an entire range of voice, data, and multimedia applications for business, entertainment, and

US Cellular Dragged Down by Low Sales – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 6th, 2009) Writes:
U.S. Cellular (USM), the wireless subsidiary of Telephone and Data Systems (TDS), reported disappointing third-quarter 2009 results with earnings per share of 41 cents, coming in below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 57 cents. It also declined significantly from the year-ago EPS of $1.02. Net income plunged 60% year over year to $35.6 million as a result of decreased sales and higher operating costs.

Top-line Hit by Lower Roaming Revenue

The Chicago-based carrier reported operating revenue of $1,058 million, down 3% from $1,092 million a year ago. This decline is attributable to lower service revenue, which decreased 3% year over year to $984.9 million due to a 26% year over year reduction in inbound roaming revenues, primarily resulting from Verizon's (VZ) acquisition of Alltel.

Decline in roaming revenue was offset by healthy data revenue, which grew 34% over the prior-year quarter to $174.3 million, accounting for 18% of service

SKM to Launch FMS Service – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 21st, 2009) Writes:
South Korea’s largest wireless carrier SK Telecom (SKM) announced plans to introduce its fixed-mobile substitution (“FMS") service. Assuming near-term approval of the service by the telecom regulator Korea Communications Commission, the company targets the commercial launch on Nov 1.   FMS refers to use of cellular handsets instead of wired or cordless landline phones for communication. This entails migration of voice minutes from fixed-line to wireless networks. FMS differs from fixed-mobile convergence, which allows users to switch between fixed-lines and mobile networks using a single dual-mode handset and two different technologies. Currently, FMS services are widely available in Europe.     SK Telecom’s FMS service allows customers to make calls within a designated area (called “Discount Zone") under the company’s network coverage. These calls will be charged at a discount rate which is the same as fixed-line VoIP (Voice-over-Inernet Protocol) service. Currently, tariffs levied on fixed-line VoIP ...
