U.S. Sees Smart-Phone Wave – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 12th, 2009) Writes:
The U.S. smart-phone market is growing at a rapid pace despite the ongoing global economic slowdown. A recent analysis by CTIA Wireless has revealed that the country’s wireless service providers have generated a massive $19.4 billion of data revenues from smart-phone users during the first half of 2009. This is an improvement of 31% year over year. This is primarily due to a shift in consumer preference towards feature-enhanced high-end PDA devices from ordinary mobile handsets used primarily for voice telephony. The PDA market size is likely to approach $200 billion by 2012, according to various industry sources.   This grand opportunity provides massive scope for telecom service providers, equipment manufacturers, chipset developers, and wireless tower operators to retain new users and grow revenues moving forward. According to the CTIA Wireless report, at present, the U.S. has more than 246 million data capable devices with 40 million smart-phones or ...

AT&T to Market GPS Smartphone – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 30th, 2009) Writes:

AT&T (T) announced the launch date of Garmin Ltd.'s (GRMN) long-awaited GPS smartphone yesterday.

The second-largest US carrier will be the exclusive distributor of the device (called “nuvifone G60") in the US starting Oct 4, 2009. This will end a more than year-and-a-half delay in the device's US market launch, and also marks Garmin's first foray into the US smartphone market.

The touch-screen based nuvifone G60 will be sold at AT&T's stores and online for $299, after a $100 rebate and with a two-year service contract. While access to GPS service will be free, customers can enjoy premium value-added services, including real-time traffic updates, weather, movies and local events for a monthly payment of $5.99.

The nuvifone G60, which is positioned as a high-end phone, is distinct from other competing smartphones with GPS technology as it is equipped with full capabilities of a satellite navigator. In addition to its extended local

Google Fires Shot Across Microsoft’s Bow with New Operating System

Contrarian Profits (July 9th, 2009) Writes:

Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG), not satisfied owning the search engine market, yesterday (Wednesday) revealed it is going to assault Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) on the turf it has dominated for two decades: the operating system (OS).

In a blog posting, the Mountain View, Calif.-based company introduced the Google Chrome Operating System, which shares the same name as the web browser it introduced in September. Google expects the OS to be available in the second half of 2010, and it initially will run onnetbooks, or low-cost laptops designed for Internet access. The company is working with multiple manufacturers such as Acer Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) and Toshiba Corp. to bring Chrome OS-backed netbooks to the market, Google said.

No. 1 computer seller H-P told the Dow Jones Newswires that it is “studying” the Chrome OS.

We want to assess the capability it may

And Then There’s This…Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Contrarian Profits (February 24th, 2009) Writes:

As per normal, every little rally attempt in early Far East trading in Sydney got firmly sold off…and by the time that London opened for business on Monday morning, gold was down about $12.

From there…it and silver rose until about lunchtime in London…the silver fix. Then gold and silver both got sold off again until just before the London p.m. gold fix…which turned out to be the lows of the day for both metals…and then away they went to the upside. Silver’s vertical spike at lunchtime in New York got hammered…and gold kind of died quietly at the same time. Gold was never allowed back over $1,000…and silver’s new high price [for this move] was not allowed to stand…as both metals finished within a hair of their closing prices on Friday. Volume yesterday, according the usual N.Y. gold commentator, “was 111,100 contracts with a switch effect of 6,700…and 70%

Blessing in Disguise

Sean Brodrick (February 4th, 2009) Writes:

Boy, I wish I had a time machine. I wouldn’t have to go far — just back a few months to buy silver at under $9 an ounce (a 38% discount to recent prices) and gold at under $715 (a 27% discount to recent prices).

Well, I do have the next best thing, though — a list of undervalued gold and silver miners that are trading at dirt-cheap valuations to their gold reserves.

These miners are leveraged to the price of precious metals. They’ve been beaten down, and they could rebound hard. Why?

Silver, Gold, GDX, S&P

Gold and silver have outperformed other investments by a wide margin recently. In January, we saw gold climb nearly 5% …

TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TSYS) Receives U.S. Patent for Deploying Content to Wireless Devices

QualityStocks (January 27th, 2009) Writes:

Today, TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted the company patent number 7,483,983 for “Method and System for Deploying Content to Wireless Devices.” This invention allows internet content to be displayed on wireless devices through web browser applications.

The Nielsen Company recently reported the results of a survey that found 17 percent of U.S. mobile phone users, or 43 million subscribers, access the Internet. Although these users are able to access internet content through the web browser of their wireless device, most internet sites are only designed to display information on a standard computer screen — not on small mobile screens. Additionally, wireless devices that access the internet use different mobile browsers and protocols, making it difficult for providers to consistently deliver content across a wide range of wireless devices.

TeleCommunication’s invention, however, allows internet content to be displayed in a variety of formats, dynamic
