Markets hit fresh highs for ‘09 yet again last week, as the first round of earnings helped to assuage investor concerns that operating results would underpin robust gains in equities this year. All told, the Dow gained 130 points to end the week at 9995 after briefly cracking the 10,000 mark, gaining 1.3% on the week and extending its gains to 13.9% on the year. The Nasdaq gained 0.8% on the week to close at 2156, up 36.8% on the year, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 gained 1.5% and 0.2% respectively, bringing their YTD totals to 20.4% and 23.4%.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Wednesday accused US Airways (LCC) for operating eight airplanes last year without conducting the mandatory safety checks. The FAA has proposed a penalty of $5.4 million against US Airways. FAA documents allege that US Airways sanctioned 1,647 flights in violation of mandatory safety checks. The flights were operated from Oct. 2008 to Jan. 2009 and were out of compliance of flouted airworthiness directives (ADs) and its maintenance program. After being charged, the management said that the specific regulations were broken when it was integrating new maintenance systems following its merger with America West and has since worked with the FAA to fix the problems. Yesterday, US Airways (LCC) announced preliminary mainline traffic results for Sept. 2009. The company reported a drop in mainline passenger load factor to 79.3% from 80.1% last year. Total scheduled mainline revenue passenger miles (RPMs) decreased 1.6% to $4.6 billion on a capacity decrease of 0.6% in scheduled mainline available seat miles (ASMs), compared with the same period in 2008. The airline has been struggling with volatile oil prices, increased competition and decline in travel.
