Unilever (UL) is targeting growth opportunities in the developing and emerging markets, which are witnessing a consumer spending growth rate, higher than the developed markets. The percentage of revenue from developing and emerging markets has increased from 20% to 48% over the last 15 years.

The company holds relatively high market share positions in many key markets -- ice cream in Turkey, laundry detergent in South Africa and soups & sauces in Indonesia. Unilever Brazil is the seventh largest operating company in that country.

Similarly in Asia, Unilever is a market leader in many categories including face care, skin cleansing, hair care, and fabric cleaning. The strategy of building relationships with local customers and suppliers through the managers who share the same culture is paving the way towards success in the developing and emerging markets for Unilever.

Another strong market for Unilever is Russia, with 7 manufacturing and production sites, along with leading brands such as Becel, Brooke Bond, Calvé, Hellmann's, Knorr and Lipton, together with Axe, Cif, Clear, Domestos, Dove, Rexona, Sunsilk and Timotei.

In addition, to strengthen Unilever’s existing dressing’s portfolio and its competitive position in Russia, one of its priority countries, the company acquired Baltimor Holding ZAO's sauces business, the leading ketchup business in Russia.

The acquisition, which follows the purchase of Russia's leading ice cream business, Inmarko, in 2008 and its commitment to build a state-of-the-art food production facility in Tula, further consolidates the position of Unilever's business in Russia.

Unilever’s research and development, along with its knowledge of the foods business -- coupled with Baltimor's local strengths -- can significantly enhance the company’s position in the Russian ketchup and dressings market.

We currently maintain a Buy rating on Unilever, as we expect the stock’s P/E to expand from current levels, driven by benefits from various growth plans along with cost savings from overhead simplification project.

Read the full analyst report on "UL"
Zacks Investment Research

For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL - April 21, 2009 - Zacks.com announces the list of stocks featured in the Analyst Blog. Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: Oracle Corp. (ORCL), Sun Microsystems, Inc. (JAVA), IBM Corp. (IBM), Unilever (UL) and Procter & Gamble (PG).

Get the most recent insight from Zacks Equity Research with the free Profit from the Pros newsletter: http://at.zacks.com/?id=4579.

Here are highlights from Monday's Analyst Blog:

Oracle Getting Burned by Sun Deal?

Oracle Corp. (ORCL) has agreed to buy Sun Microsystems, Inc. (JAVA) for $7.4 billion ($9.50 a share) after IBM Corp. (IBM) backed out of its deal. Oracle is a software company (successful software companies become "banks" because they generate so much cash) and so the antitrust problem that existed for IBM is not a factor in the Oracle transaction.

This is a departure for Oracle and, in my opinion, is an expensive foray into uncharted territory. There is no reason to think that a software company can run a hardware and service business. So Sun is likely to retain the unsuccessful management that has failed to turn Sun back into a profitable company.

The purchase price is too much; Sun having been shopped to all and sundry. This is a major coup for the investment bankers who have maximized a fee from a deal that few, if any, companies would buy at that price.

New Software for Supply Chains

Unilever (UL) and Procter & Gamble (PG) have announced that they are adopting a new technology to improve supply chain efficiency. Both companies have selected Terra Technology's real-time forecasting solutions to better sense consumer demand. Through Terra's software, these consumer products companies can further optimize inventory levels and manufacturing planning.

Terra's product uses pattern recognition mathematics that deciphers daily streams of order flow data and determines which information is truly predictive of actual demand. Specifically, the software reconciles daily demand signals along the supply chain, such as point-of-sale (POS) data, retailer warehouse inventories, outlet inventories, and retailer forecasts.

The software-based system then provides daily forecasts of expected orders. These forecasts are more accurate, cutting near-term forecast error by approximately 50% and allowing inventories to be reduced by about 20%. As a result, consumer products companies can better plan manufacturing schedules and reduce inventory levels in line with predicted demand.

Unilever is the latest major consumer company to sign on for Terra's inventory optimization solutions, which gives better visibility into real-time shifts in consumer demand. Unilever beta tested Terra's software in the U.S. Personal Care business for several months. Terra's solution cut Unilever's near-term forecast error by more than 25%.

By gaining supply chain visibility, Unilever should be able to improve manufacturing processes, lower costs, and enhance the company's product mix. In addition, Terra Technology's forecasting solution improves customer service. The rollout of Terra's system is expected to be completed by August 2009.

Procter & Gamble has also selected Terra Technology software solution to further improve its supply chain forecasting accuracy. In Proctor's beta tests, the software reduced forecast error by more than 50% in certain product categories. The software analyzes the daily demand information from key retailers and creates a more accurate, single forecast.

Campbell Soup (CPB) implemented Terra Technology's software back in 2003 and reduced its forecast error by almost 50% (from 41% to 21%). As a result, not only did Campbell's improve its supply chain and reduce costs, the company was awarded the CGT (Consumer Goods Technology) Award in 2004.

Sara Lee Corp. (SLE) shares rose sharply this morning on reports that the company was looking to sell its European household unit for more than $2 billion to focus more on the core food and beverage business.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal said the company has hired Goldman Sachs to examine possible bidders for the business that accounts for about 15% of its sales. Sara Lee spokesman Mike Cummins declined to comment on what he called speculation.

The Downers Grove, Illinois-based company swung to a loss in the latest second quarter as a stronger dollar weighed on its international sales and consumer spending continued to slump amid the global economic downturn. Sara Lee, which spun off apparel maker Hanesbrands in 2006, has been looking to streamline operations since then.

The Journal pointed to Unilever (UN), Reckitt Benckiser and Colgate-Palmolive (CL) as possible buyers of Sara Lee's European unit that makes Kiwi shoe polish, Sanex deodorant and Bloom insecticides.

Shares of the company were up 5% to $7.69 at noon on the New York Stock Exchange. They have lost more than half of their value since August.

"SLE" Free Stock Analysis: Buy?
pWhile China may blame the rest of the world for its dramatic decline in exports, Beijing has no one else to blame but itself for the steep drop in dairy exports./p
pAn article in today’s China Daily reported that the country’s dairy exports “have ground to a halt” in the wake of the tainted-milk scandal./p
pThe latest numbers from China’s General Administration of Customs (GAC) showed that only 1,036 tons of dairy products were exported in October 2008, down 92% year-on-year. From January to September, the monthly average export of dairy products was 12,000 tons./p
pOnce again, China is looking to the U.S. to rescue another of its exports. With the US-China Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) on economic, trade and food safety issues#8230;/p

Recommendations include: Unilever (UN), Transocean (RIG) and CSX (CSX).

Traders are reacting to the passage of the financial bailout by selling on the news. Though the major indexes continue to show sizeable gains for the day, they are far off from their intraday highs.

Why?

There isn't a specific reason, but the lack of a follow-thru rally clearly has led some to take profits. The large drop in nonfarm payrolls is not helping, either. And anxiety about holding positions over the weekend could be a factor.

Though the postitive vote resolves uncertainty about the bill's passage, it does not provide an immediate solution to the credit crunch. It will take time to implement the bailout. It will also take time to get banks to trust each other. Nonetheless, passing the bill was a step in the right direction.

Individual investors should continue to follow a conservative stance, with a focus on stable, shareholder-friendly companies, such as Unilever (UN), Transocean (RIG) and CSX (CSX).

This said, the markets are likely to remain volatile over the short-term. Therefore, dollar-cost averaging over the next few months will provide a combination of exposure to any market rebound, while helping to reduce exposure to daily swings.

In this market, investors don't have to correctly pick the bottom to profit. But continuing to look at stocks and maintaining a shopping list are strategies that will lead to long-term wealth creation.

Read the full analyst report on UN

Read the full analyst report on RIG

Read the full analyst report on CSX
