Abyaar net profit surge could spur sukuk

Jason G. Wulterkens (November 15th, 2009) Writes:

imagesKuwait-based Abyaar Real Estate Development Company (Abyaar), which develops and manages properties in the UAE and in Dubai in particular, recently announced a net profit for the first nine months of 2009 of KD5 million ($17.5 million) and an EPS of 6.90 fils (a subdivision of currency used in many Arab countries, where KD1 roughly equals 1000 fils).  Per its chairman, Hesham Abdul Wahab Al Obeid, the firm reduced financing debt during the period by 30%, down to KD 77 million, compared to KD108 million during the same period of 2008.  Owners’ equity also increased, up to KD146 million.

The strong showing begs the question how quickly Abyaar will return to the debt markets; in October 2008 it postponed a proposed sale of Islamic bonds worth up to $1 billion in order to finance its expansion plans.  Rashed Al-Rashdan, its

Daimler Financial Lands in UAE – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 14th, 2009) Writes:
Daimler Financial Services, the financial services arm of auto giant Daimler (DAI), has opened two new companies in the UAE – Mercedes-Benz Finance Middle East and Mercedes-Benz Leasing Middle East – in order to boost slackening sales in the region. This has made Daimler the first automaker to have its own finance and leasing companies in the oil rich country.  Both the financial services companies will offer loans and leasing deals to customers of new and pre-owned Daimler vehicles that will comply with Islamic law or Sharia. The Islamic law prohibits companies or persons from charging or collecting interest fees when money is lent or accepted or invested in businesses, goods or services such as pork, alcohol or gambling that are contrary to its principles.  This creates difficulty for the financial services companies to operate. Daimler’s interest in the UAE was revealed when Abu Dhabi’s Aabar ...

Greetings from Qatar!

Chris Mayer (October 8th, 2009) Writes:

Qatar is a red-hot economy. Last year it grew around 18% and this year it ought to grow another 16%. We saw the headlines in the Gulf Times in the lounge while waiting for our transfer to Dubai.

Qatar’s greatest asset is its natural gas reserves. In fact, the largest gas field in the world is here. Its discoverers were disappointed when they found it in 1971. They were looking for oil.

The boom Qatar now enjoys is the result of some daring investments in liquefied natural gas (LNG) back when people thought doing such a thing was a little batty. Faisal Al Suwaidi, the head of Qatargas, deserves the props for his wager, which have paid off handsomely. Today, Qatar produces about one-quarter of the world’s natural gas.

Qatar supplies such faraway customers as Japan, India and China. Qatargas also operates the largest LNG terminal in Europe at South Hook on

Think China vs. India

Contrarian Profits (September 30th, 2009) Writes:

The U.S.’ potential conflict with Iran might pale in comparison to a fight brewing between China and India, says Chris Mayer. “This one doesn’t seem to get much attention in the Western media, but I’ve read some dire stuff from the Eastern media. By their lights, the Sino-Indian border hasn’t been this tense since 1986-87, when the skirmishes broke out between Indian and Chinese troops.

“The issue is a disputed border between the two. They fought a 32-day war over it in 1962. China emerged victorious, but the whole thing settled nothing. The border between the two remains hotly contested. It is nearly 2,500 miles long and winds its way across difficult mountainous terrain. There is a northeastern state in India called Arunachal Pradesh, which China calls “Southern Tibet” and claims as Chinese territory.

“India claims last year there were nearly 300 border violations by Chinese troops and over
