Toyota Swings to Profit – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 9th, 2009) Writes:
Toyota Motors (TM) returned to profitability in the second quarter of fiscal 2010 ended Sept. 30, 2009, after reporting losses since the third quarter of fiscal 2009. The company posted a profit of ¥21.8 billion ($232 million) or ¥6.96 (7 cents) per share. This can be attributed to government incentive programs across the world -- such as "Cash for Clunkers" -- that helped the company recoup its market share. However, this is still lower than the ¥139.8 billion ($1.49 billion) or ¥44.52 (47 cents) per share of profit recorded in the same quarter of 2008. Consolidated revenue in the quarter dipped 24% to ¥4.54 trillion ($48 billion). Automotive revenue fell 24% to ¥4.11 trillion ($44 billion) while Financial Services revenue shrank 17% to ¥307 billion ($4 billion). This was on the back of a decline in vehicle sales in each region as well as negative impact ...

Stock Market News for November 4, 2009 – Market News

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 4th, 2009) Writes:

U.S. stocks wobbled Tuesday and ended the day mixed even as automakers reported improved auto sales and Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway said it would buy Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp.  Traders were reluctant to place big bets as they awaited the outcome of a two-day FOMC meeting which got underway Tuesday and Friday's monthly jobs report.  Although expectations are the Fed would keep interest rates in the 0-0.25% range, Wall Street has been speculating if there would be a change of tone in the policy statement.

On Tuesday, the 30-stock Dow Jones industrial average closed down 17.53 points, or 0.18%, to 9,771.91.  The broad Standard & Poor's 500-stock index added 2.53 points, or 0.24%, to 1,045.41 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq advanced 8.12 points, or 0.40%, to 2,057.32.  On the NYSE, volume slowed to 1.38 billion shares.

Honda Tries for a Better Fit – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 27th, 2009) Writes:
A stronger Japanese yen against the dollar may prompt Honda Motor (HMC) to shift production of its Fit model from Japan to the U.S. This is mainly because Fit is one of the Honda’s models that attracted attention in the U.S. but are imported from Japan. However, the strengthening of yen against dollar to around 90 is narrowing down the company’s revenues in Japan upon translation.  So far, Honda has focused on regional manufacturing strategy for its vehicles. The company produces about 80% of all the vehicles sold in the U.S. However, the 5-door hatchback Fit – introduced in Japan in 2001 and launched in the U.S. market in 2006 – is manufactured at a facility outside Tokyo.  The model gained huge importance in the U.S. due to its fuel-efficiency (30 mpg). For the first nine months of the year, Fit sales in the U.S. were ...
