Boeing Delivers First Freighter – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 13th, 2009) Writes:
The Boeing Company (BA) towed the first 747-8 Freighter model out of its factory in Everett. The long-awaited freighter is now being put up for test flights. The 747-8 Freighter is the new high-capacity 747 that will give cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any freighter airplane while providing enhanced environmental performance. It is 250 feet, 2 inches (76.3 m) long, which is 18 feet and 4 inches (5.6 m) longer than the 747-400 series Freighter. The stretch provides customers with 16% more revenue cargo volume compared to its predecessor. That translates to four additional main-deck pallets and three additional lower-hold pallets. Boeing to date has secured 105 orders for the 747-8 series aircrafts, 78 of which are orders for the freighter variant. The rest orders are for the passenger variant. The 747-8 Freighter series will boost the commercial aircraft segment of ...

Zacks Industry Outlook Highlights: United Technologies Corporation, Oshkosh Corporation, The Boeing Company and Honeywell International Inc. – Press Releases

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 4th, 2009) Writes:
For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL – November 4, 2009 – Zacks.com releases the latest Industry Outlook. Today, Zacks Equity Research discusses the Aerospace & Defense sector, including United Technologies Corporation (UTX), Oshkosh Corporation (OSK), The Boeing Company (BA) and Honeywell International Inc. (HON).

A synopsis of today’s Industry Outlook is presented below. The full article can be read at http://www.zacks.com/stock/news/26834/Aerospace+%26amp%3B+Defense.

With core defense spending expected to slow, U.S. defense contractors need to identify additional revenue sources for the coming years. 2009 holds potential for interesting merger and acquisition (M&A) activity, mostly smaller deals by larger A&D firms to fill in capability gaps -- particularly in the security, defense electronics and aftermarket services business areas. U.S. defense firms may see opportunities in credit-squeezed markets to pick up U.S. assets at historically low price-to-earnings multiples.

Some large companies are expanding into the adjacent markets

Aerospace & Defense – Industry Outlook

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 3rd, 2009) Writes:
OVERVIEW Inherently, big defense contractors are expected to eliminate jobs as the Pentagon has lowered spending on traditional weapon systems, while smaller, niche companies may accelerate hiring as the United States garners resources to protect ground troops and strategic computer networks. Industry pioneer Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) aims to reduce 600 jobs as a result of the US Defense Department's decision to terminate the VH-71 presidential helicopter program. The Boeing Company (BA) hinted that Pentagon cuts would claim 1,000 jobs in its defense business, affecting staffing at various work sites in the United States in missile defense and in the Army's Future Combat Systems modernization program, which is now being opened to more competition. The large commercial aircraft sector is expected to generate most of its revenue from Asia Pacific Japan (APJ) and the Middle East, relying less on U.S. orders because of the ...

Boeing Flies Low in 3Q – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 21st, 2009) Writes:
The Boeing Company (BA) has posted a third quarter loss of $1.6 million or $2.23 per diluted share, worse than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of $2.12 per share. Last year, the company reported a net income of $695 million or 96 cents per share. Earnings in the quarter were affected due to reclassification to research and development of costs for the first three 787-series test airplanes incurred in July ($2.46 per share) as well as in August and September (14 cents per share). The company also digested a charge of 99 cents per share from the delay in producing a new version of the 747-8 series freighter jet leading to late design changes. On the other hand, revenues rose 9% to $16.7 billion from $15.3 billion in the year-ago period. The upside came from increased military aircraft deliveries and higher volume in services ...

Boeing to Digest $1 Billion Charge – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 7th, 2009) Writes:
The Boeing Company (BA) yesterday announced that it will record a $1 billion charge in the third quarter of fiscal 2009. The company attributed the charge from a delay in producing a new version of the 747-8 series freighter jet, leading to slow sales and late design changes. The aircraft competes with Airbus' A380 series aircraft. The goliath of commercial aerospace, Boeing has witnessed falling orders for its commercial planes in the recent times on account of tepid demand for air travel and cargo services. Already, a slew of commercial airlines have cancelled or deferred their fleet additions. Boeing has cut costs, reduced workforce and scaled back production of some aircrafts to cope with the changing market dynamics.   The $1 billion charge includes $640 million for higher estimated production costs consisting of late engineering design changes. This is besides the $360 million stemming from Boeing's decision ...

LMT Focused on Shareholder Value – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 29th, 2009) Writes:
Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT) is prudent in returning a substantial portion of its free cash flow to shareholders through share repurchases and incremental dividends. The company recently boosted its quarterly dividend by 10.5%, or 6 cents per-share. This took the quarterly dividend to 63 cents per share from the pre-existing dividend of 57 cents. The dividend is payable on Dec. 31, 2009 to shareholders of record as of Dec. 1, 2009.   Historically, Lockheed Martin has been able to augment shareholders’ returns by more than 21% over the last five years through its dividend program. Earlier, in the third quarter of 2008, the company authorized a 35.7% increase of its quarterly dividend from 42 cents to 57 cents per share. Separately, Lockheed Martin recently authorized repurchase of an additional 20 million of its common stock under its ongoing share repurchase program initiated in October 2002. The ...

Is Boeing’s Rating Secure? – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 31st, 2009) Writes:
Standard & Poor's said on Friday that it is apprehensive about The Boeing Company’s (BA) risk in terms of order cancellations and deferrals for its commercial aircrafts. Pitted against Airbus’s A319 aircraft, Boeing’s 787 series is plagued by delays. The inaugural test flight at the end of fiscal 2009 is more than two years behind the original delivery schedule. The company has already deferred the inaugural delivery of the 787 series aircraft five times. Standard & Poor's is apprehensive this may force Boeing to scale back production of models 737, 747, 767 and 777 -- virtually everything other than its new 787 series in fiscal 2010. This viewpoint is shared by Fitch Ratings as well. As of now, Standard & Poor's has a Buy rating on Boeing’s shares while Fitch has an "A+" rating. The goliath of the commercial aerospace, Boeing has witnessed falling orders in ...
