Stocks Resume Decline, Bond Yields Ease

Contrarian Profits (December 3rd, 2008) Writes:

Global stocks decline as gloomy economic news flow resumes… Euro zone services activity falls to a fresh record low… Central banks expected to cut rates aggressively… MSCI World stock index down 0.4 percent

A tentative rebound in global stocks spluttered on Wednesday while euro zone government bond yields hit a three-year low as gloomy economic news highlighted the case for more aggressive interest rate cuts in Europe this week.

The euro stayed on the backfoot and oil held near a 3-1/2 year low a day before the European Central Bank, Bank of England and Sweden’s Riksbank are all widely expected to cut borrowing costs.

Supporting those expectations, economic reports on Wednesday showed the euro zone’s services economy fell deeper into recession in November than initially thought and inflationary pressures eased.

“This is a horrible survey across the board, showing that the euro zone service sector is being hit ever harder

Obama Unveils Economic Team, Plans 2009 Stimulus Package

Contrarian Profits (November 25th, 2008) Writes:

President-elect Barack Obama yesterday (Monday) formally unveiled his economic team, including the nomination of New York Federal Reserve Bank President Timothy F. Geithner as the new administration’s U.S. Treasury secretary. The team’s first challenge will be assembling an economic stimulus package that could be even larger than the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) the Bush Administration has deployed.

The nomination of Geithner to succeed current U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. was leaked over the weekend, and was reported by Money Morning yesterday.

Geithner (pronounced: GITE-ner) obtained a Master of Arts degree in International Economics and East Asian Studies from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies in 1985. He also has studied Japanese and Chinese and has lived in present-day Zimbabwe, India, Thailand and China.

A-Power (Nasdaq:APWR) Continues to Execute - Way Oversold in Our Opinion

Small Cap Pulse (November 24th, 2008) Writes:
November 24, 2008 ndash; A-Power (Nasdaq:APWR) reported Q3 results last week, posting a 120% Y/Y increase in revenue, a 124% Y/Y increase in net income, affirming earnings guidance of $35 million for 2008 and $70 million for 2009. Management reported a strong balance sheet of $59 million with no debt. Meanwhile, the stock closed at $3.45 on Friday, posting a $112 million market cap, and is trading below book value. What gives? The Bad News The stockrsquo;s decline to $3.45 from $20 at the beginning of September is a consequence of several factors, in our opinion, none of which include failure to execute. First, the broader markets have pulled back over the same period considerably. The Nasdaq has traded down about 1,100 points, or 45% over this period. Second, rumors have been widespread that a major holder of APWR, a fund, has been liquidating stock. Whether or not this is true ...

Calculating Gross Margin for Apple’s iPhone (4Q08)

Turley Muller (November 17th, 2008) Writes:
span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"APPLE INC (nasd:AAPL) /spanAccording to my calculations, deferred revenue booked from Q4 iPhone sales carries a 55.5% gross margin. Gross margin on the deferred revenue (DR) booked from the first generation model averages about 29%. The average gross margin for total booked DR is 47.8%.br /br /I derived this number from the “deferred expense under subscription accounting“ that Apple disclosed in its annual filing (10-K) in conjunction with the deferred revenue (under subscription accounting) also reported. I used some rather extensive math to come up with the 55.5% number which I discuss below.br /br /Apple’s ”Non-GAAP“ figures it provided for Q4 implies that 3G iPhone GM was 47.8%. According to the 10-K, GM for iPhone deferred revenue not yet recognized in income is also 47.8%. Coincidence? Not likely. Since the deferred revenue carried on the balance sheet includes both the original and 3G models, that GM should ...

Rail-link to help boost Cambodia’s export market

Jason G. Wulterkens (November 8th, 2008) Writes:
China will build a railroad from Phnom Penh to Vietnam as part of the project to create a link from Singapore to Kunming in China, said Cambodia’s foreign minister Hor Namhong on his return from regional meetings in Hanoi, Vietnam. The $500 million project is “very important for Cambodia’s economy because we can then export goods to other southeast Asian countries at low cost,” he told reporters at Phnom Penh International airport. The Asian Development Bank has also stepped in with funds to help overhaul Cambodia’s railways, a project many hope will be finished within the next few years. Cross-border trade between Cambodia and Vietnam totaled 1.7 billion dollars in the first eight months of this year, Hor Namhong said. The impoverished nation still suffers from the civil war that ended in the 1990s, and dilapidated tracks wreak havoc for trains. ...
