Qualcomm’s Path-breaking Initiative – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 13th, 2009) Writes:
Future sustainable growth of Qualcomm Inc (QCOM) is all set to come from its state-of-the-art next-generation Snapdragon technology platform. A major initiative of Qualcomm is the convergence of mobile computing with its Snapdragon solutions. These chipsets have been designed for pocket-sized portable computing devices.  This platform enables phone manufacturers to develop high-speed and more power efficient smart-phones and smart-books. We believe diversification into the mobile computing market was necessary for Qualcomm due to lukewarm growth of the company’s ordinary mobile phone chipset market. Massive growth of smart-phones may make up for these losses.  As of now, over 15 mobile device manufacturers are developing more than 30 Snapdragon-based products. Several leading software developers have started writing applications for mobile operating system, multimedia player, social networking, and productivity development tools based on the Snapdragon platform.  Acer Inc, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., and LG Electronics Inc are the ...

Qualcomm Enters Intel Territory – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 25th, 2009) Writes:
Qualcomm Inc (QCOM) is all set to start selling chipsets for smart-books from the next quarter onward. The company is the largest developer of digital mobile chipsets based on CDMA wireless technology. This new venture into the smart-book market will be a vertical diversification for the company. A smart-book is a pocket digital assistant (PDA) that functions like a mobile phone but resembles a small-size notebook with full keyboards. The chipset market for computer is primarily dominated by Intel Inc (INTC). Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD) and Texas Instruments Inc (TXN) are other major players. Qualcomm has developed smart-book chipsets based on its state-of-the-art Snapdragon platform technology. A path-breaking initiative of the company is the convergence of mobile computing with the next-generation Snapdragon platform. STM Enhances Digital TV Experience – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 19th, 2009) Writes:
In order to meet the growing global demand for accessing digital terrestrial television services, STMicroelectronics NV (STM) recently introduced a single-chip DVB-T silicon tuner that enables manufacturers to simplify product assembly and supply-chain management.

As consumers switch from analog to digital television broadcasting, the demand for digital set-top boxes and integrated digital televisions (iDTVs) is on the rise. This transition has already taken place in nine countries, including the USA, parts of Europe and Scandinavia, and is underway in other nations.

With its STV4100, the company offers complete chipsets for digital-terrestrial receivers, including the tuner and a choice of demodulators, MPEG decoders and combined demodulator/decoder ICs.

Silicon tuners are replacing those supplied by third-party providers, which combine multiple discrete components in a metal enclosure and must be individually adjusted for optimum performance. STMicroelectronics’ new device saves up to 30 separate components, has a compact QFN 5 x 5mm

Atheros Tops in Q2 – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (July 22nd, 2009) Writes:
Atheros (ATHR), a leader in the design of chipsets used in WLAN devices, recently reported revenues of $112.2 million, down 7.6% year over year, but up 27.7% sequentially. Management had earlier guided revenues to increase by 15% - 20% sequentially, but the reported revenues surpassed management’s guidance and consensus estimate of $103.7 million.  Management stated that the better-than-expected results were driven by strong product cycles and market share gains, particularly in the PC and retail router markets. The company also saw strength in notebooks and growth in consumer markets.  Gross margins dipped to 47.4% from 48.1% in the previous quarter and 50.8% in the year-ago quarter, but were in-line with the company’s projection of around 47% - 48%. We believe the company is gaining market share at the expense of gross margin in its core WLAN and Ethernet businesses.  On a GAAP basis, the ...

Market Recoils as CIT Edges Toward Bankruptcy

Contrarian Profits (July 20th, 2009) Writes:

The probably bankruptcy of CIT Group Inc. (NYSE: CIT) could have major implications on the retail and manufacturing sectors this week, as many related companies are reliant on the financing giant.

With options running out over the weekend, CIT advisors began preparations for a bankruptcy filing. As of Sunday, JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) and Morgan Stanley (MS) were talking with other banks about a debtor-in-possession loan, used to fund a company’s operations after it seeks court protection from creditors, Bloomberg News reported.

Bondholders held calls last week to discuss whether to swap some claims for equity to reduce indebtedness. Thomas Lauria, a lawyer at White & Case LLP, told Bloomberg that a group of CIT creditors he represents offered to provide $3 billion in new loans to bridge CIT to an out-of-court restructuring or an orderly bankruptcy, but had yet to hear back from CIT management.

“It seems CIT was

China Shows Hope to Chipmakers – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (June 30th, 2009) Writes:

The Chinese stimulus package announced in November last year has started impacting demand for consumer electronics products. Statistics released by the Chinese government indicate a 15.2% increase in May retail sales, the highest in four months. This, in turn, is pushing up demand for semiconductors used in cell phones, TVs and other electronic gadgets. During the course of the past one month, the top four foundries have turned more optimistic, citing higher Chinese demand and strength in consumer and computing markets.

Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg. Co. Ltd. (TSM), the largest semiconductor foundry, went back on its decision to cut capex spending in 2009. The company raised its capex estimate from $1.5 billion to $1.9 billion, similar to 2008 levels. It also decided to increase R&D headcount by 360 and design technology headcount by another 90. While the company's profitability could look like a positive in comparison to peers, TSMC
