Grupo Televisa S.A. (TV) has decided to explore the wireless communications market. Televisa is the largest media company in Mexico as well as in the Spanish-speaking world. Its cable TV subsidiary Cablevision will start providing mobile phone services in Mexico from the first quarter of 2010. Televisa has already started its own telecom business. On May 9, 2007, the Mexican Ministry of Communication and Transportation granted Cablevision permission to offer fixed telephony services through its network. Spain’s incumbent telecom carrier Telefonica SA (TEF) has reportedly made an all-cash bid to acquire Brazilian telecom operator GVT Holding SA in an effort to expand its presence in the lucrative Brazilian telecom market. The Spanish operator’s Brazilian fixed-line subsidiary Telecomunicacoes de Sao Paulo (Telesp) has offered BRL48 (US$27.2) per share of GVT to acquire atleast 51% of the company, equating to a total investment of €2.55 billion (US$3.75 billion). This offer, which is subject to regulatory and shareholders approvals, has outbid the BRL42 (US$23.8) per share offer made by France-based media company Vivendi SA in September 2009. The MiFi line of products, the industry’s first Intelligent Mobile Hotspot, is getting increasing market traction. This product has been developed by Novatel Wireless Inc (NVTL), a leading provider of wireless data access cards and embedded solutions.

Yesterday, Novatel entered into an agreement with Moblix to sell MiFi products in Central & Eastern Europe and the Middle East using Moblix’s reseller channel. 3G mobile broadband networks are being increasingly deployed in these regions by several telecom carriers.

MiFi is an ultra-portable wireless device, creating an environment of high-speed internet connectivity that can be easily shared by multiple users using up to five Wi-Fi devices. Millicom is Consolidating its Balance Sheet Millicom International Cellular S.A. (MICC), a Luxemburg-based leading global wireless service provider in various emerging markets, is exploring all options to improve its highly leveraged balance sheet.

The company had approximately $2.2 billion of total debt and $729 million of cash & cash equivalent at the end of the first quarter 2009. Management has taken several decisions, the first of which is to reduce its capital expenditure.

Historically, Millicom has benefited from the huge capital expenditure it had undertaken to expand and upgrade networks, which resulted in significant subscriber growth and record revenue. Since a major part of fiscal 2008 capital spending was earmarked to improve network coverage, it is expected that the company will now benefit from service expansion.
