Oxygen Biotherapeutics, Inc. announced today enrollment of its first patient in Phase II-b clinical trials for a new drug. The trial, which is to take place in Switzerland, will utilize OXBT’s perfluorocarbon (PFC) therapeutic oxygen carrier, Oxycyte(TM), in emulsion form for the treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Chairman and CEO of OXBT Chris Stern noted the “invaluable importance” of the drug for enhancing TBI sufferer’s recovery, touting Oxycyte as long awaited proof of a “safe and effective treatment for this devastating injury.”

Stern restored shareholder morale lost over the extended period preceding initial patient dosing, explaining that the on-site “logistical” concerns and personnel readiness operations required to ensure success were necessary because, as he put it “our main criterion in the trial is safety”.

Oxygen Biotherapeutics now has a clinical development pipeline which includes seven indications for Oxycyte(TM) emulsion. Oxycyte is the Company’s perfluorocarbon (PFC) therapeutic oxygen carrier. The new Oxycyte pipeline includes: Traumatic Brain Injury, Carbon Monoxide Poisoning, Surgical Iatrogenic Air Embolism, Spinal Cord Injury, Organ Preservation, Decompression Sickness, and Sickle Cell Crisis.

The company has also reported that its topical pipeline includes six additional indications in development for the Oxycyte Gel. The first use of the Dermacyte Gel is for a cosmetic line that is now available for pre-orders via the BuyDermacyte.com website, with product shipment expected in about four weeks. Yesterday, Oxygen Biotherapeutics, Inc. announced that the company has received approval from Israel’s Ministry of Health to begin a Phase II-b clinical trial for use of Oxycyte(R), a perfluorocarbon therapeutic oxygen carrier, in traumatic brain injuries. With four centers in Israel, the clinical trial is part of a larger study that also includes seven trial centers in Switzerland.

The company has named the study “Safety and Tolerability of Oxycyte in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury” or “STOP TBI.” The dose escalation trial aims to discover the lowest possible dose of Oxycyte that provides clinical benefit in traumatic brain injury while minimizing adverse effects. Dose levels of Oxycyte would start at 1.0 ml/kg body weight and escalate in steps to 2.0 ml/kg, and 3.0 ml/kg. Dose escalation will only occur after a favorable review of safety data by an independent Data Safety Monitoring Board.
