Maturing debt markets anchor emerging economies’ resilience, V-shaped recovery

Jason G. Wulterkens (November 19th, 2009) Writes:

The following appeared in the November issue of Business Diary Botswana:

Despite the IMF’s recent projection that Botswana’s economy will contract 10.3% this year, the lender expects a 4.1% uptick next year such that emergency funding would not be required. Back in June the country tapped a $1.5bn “budget support loan” from the African Development Bank–the largest such facility ever granted by the Bank–in order to finance part of a budget deficit then estimated at around 13.5% of GDP, and since revised to 14%. The IMF cited a renewal of demand for diamonds as a central facet of its optimistic forecast. Furthermore, it predicted, GDP growth across sub-Saharan Africa will rise to approximately 4% next year and 5% in 2011, up from 1.1% in 2009. “We think it should be possible for sub-Saharan Africa to recover quicker this time around and have a ‘V-shaped recovery,’”

Lake Victoria Mining Co. (LVCA.OB) Uses New Trenching Program to Search for Parallel Gold Veins.

QualityStocks (October 15th, 2009) Writes:

Lake Victoria Mining Company yesterday reported the recent use of a new trenching program for locating new quartz veins at the company’s Singida Gold project in central Tanzania. The company has announced that detailed mapping and trench wall sampling has commenced as the new project suggests that three new veins may have been exposed in the trenches.

Roger Newell, Lake Victoria’s president stated, “Within only 20 meters to the north east of the already defined 5km gold vein trend we encountered 3 new veins within 1 to 2 meters of the surface, right where our interpreted magnetic images had indicated. So far, all our exploration work at Singida has provided positive results, and these latest trenches suggest that new veins appear to be present and running parallel to the main structure that we sampled from underground shafts. This could in fact mean that our potential resource could expand by 2 or

The United States is the New Tanzania? Ugh…

Investment U (September 28th, 2009) Writes:

The United States is the New Tanzania? Ugh…

by Robert Williams, Publisher

Switzerland sits atop the overall ranking in The Global Competitiveness Report, just released by the World Economic Forum, representing the first time since 2004 that the United States doesn’t hold the top spot. But hey, that’s what being at the epicenter of a global financial crisis will do, right?

The Global Competitiveness Index, 2009-2010Singapore, Sweden and Denmark round out the top five.

The shocker, however, is how badly the United States scored for the soundness of its banks. It placed 108th, just ahead of Venezuela, Serbia and Vietnam and right behind Tanzania.

“Given that the financial crisis originated in large part in the United States, it is hardly surprising that there has been a weakening of the assessment of its financial market sophistication…” said the WEF.

Yeah. But Tanzania?

For the record, Tanzania borders nations

A Recovery Impersonator

Bill Bonner (September 9th, 2009) Writes:

This recovery is wonderful in every way, except the important ones. It is like a shiny new airplane. It has glossy aluminum wings. It has plush seats in the first class section. Trim stewardesses serve drinks. Movies are available on demand in all sections…

A majority of those polled by Bloomberg think it’s great; 61% said they thought they economy had taken off and was flying high. Stocks are up. Commodities are up. And here’s another Bloomberg headline: “Global investors give Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke top marks…”

The recovery has won the approval of economists and the public. It has almost everything going for it. It just won’t fly!

Comes news this morning that the US economy is still on the runway. This report from the AP explains why:

“WASHINGTON (AP) – Consumers slashed their borrowing in July by the largest amount on record as job losses and uncertainty about the

Jason Simpkins (August 12th, 2009) Writes:

Obscure Law Forces Companies to Come Clean on Gold Mandatory government filing NI 43-101 required gold mining companies in Canada to disclose how much gold they really have. This one company’s filing just revealed that it’s sitting on the 7th largest gold strike in North American history. Few know about this yet. And for a short time, savvy investors will be able to buy gold for 17 cents on the dollar. Read the full report.

With an Emerging Markets Foray, Molson and SABMiller Quench Their Thirst for Global Growth

Contrarian Profits (August 11th, 2009) Writes:

With sales volume plunging in Western markets, Molson Coors Brewing Co. (NYSE: TAP) and SABMiller PLC (OTC ADR: SBMRY) are tapping into emerging markets for refreshing growth.

SABMiller, for instance, saw beer sales slump 7% in Europe and 0.8% in the United States, while Africa and Asia combined for 11% sales growth. Sales in China alone soared 17% in the quarter.

While demand in Europe has dropped sharply, countries in emerging markets such as Africa and Asia have fared relatively well despite falling back from the high - one might say unsustainable rates of growth of recent years,” said SABMiller Chairman Meyer Kahn.

As a percentage of commercially produced alcohol, beer now accounts for 49.0% of the market in Africa and 32.8% in Asia, Meyer said.

In China, SABMiller’s success is largely attributable to the popularity of a Chinese beer named Snow, which recently supplanted Bud Light as
