Glaxo H1N1 Vaccine Approved – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 13th, 2009) Writes:
GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) recently received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its unadjuvanted influenza A (H1N1) pandemic vaccine.  The FDA approved the supplemental biologics license application (sBLA), which was filed as a strain change supplement to Glaxo’s FluLaval seasonal flu vaccine. This means that Glaxo can now market its swine flu vaccine for use in adults to prevent influenza.     The company has already received an order for 7.6 million doses of its swine flu vaccine from the United States Department of Health and Human Services. This order is a part of the US Government’s intention to secure about 250 million doses to help fight the swine flu pandemic.   The current outbreak of swine flu pandemic can prove to be a big opportunity for vaccine manufacturers. In addition to Glaxo, other major players in this field include Sanofi-Aventis (SNY), Novartis ...

Big Pharma and Biotech – Industry Outlook

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 9th, 2009) Writes:
The pharmaceutical industry has witnessed major changes in 2009. Performance has been affected by factors like sluggish prescription trends, intensifying generic competition and limited phase III catalysts. The next five years are expected to reflect a significant imbalance between new product introductions and patent losses. According to IMS Health (RX), this is the main reason why global pharmaceutical market growth will be restricted to the mid-single digits through 2013. Over the next five years, products that currently generate about $137 billion in sales are expected to face generic competition, including Lipitor, Plavix and Seretide. At the same time, new products are not expected to generate the same level of sales as the products losing patent protection have. With most of the big pharma companies already facing patent challenges for their blockbuster products or likely to face them going forward, the companies have been looking toward mergers ...

Grupo Aeroportuario Descends – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 4th, 2009) Writes:
Last week, Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico, S.A.B. de C.V. (PAC) reported gloomy results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2009. During the quarter, revenues declined 4.8% year over year and reached MXN$40.2 million. The decrease was primarily due to the decrease in aeronautical revenues. Revenues from aeronautical services declined 5.8% and reached MXN$37.8 million, mainly as a result of a decline of MXN$42.4 million in passenger charges, which was offset by an increase in airplane landing fees and airplane parking fees. Non-aeronautical service declined 1.3% to MXN$2.3 million. Cost of services declined 22.4% to MXN$56.1 million; as a percentage of revenues, cost of services decreased 560 basis points. Per workload unit ("WLU"), cost of services declined MXN$6.1 million from MXN$44.3 million in the third quarter of 2008 to MXN$38.2 million in the third quarter of 2009. As a result of the decrease in total ...

Grupo Aeroportuario Posts Positive – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 26th, 2009) Writes:
Earlier this week, Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte (OMAB) reported encouraging results for the third quarter of 2009.  With the occurrence of swine flu in the Mexico City Airport Terminal 2 Hotel during the quarter, the company took a decisive step in the development of additional sources of non-aeronautical revenues. Total revenues were higher than the three previous quarters, in part as a result of initiatives to preserve aeronautical revenues.  In addition, Grupo Aeroportuario continued to implement cost control measures. These actions contributed to offsetting most of the impact of lower traffic volumes on revenues and to an increase in adjusted EBITDA of 2.6% as compared to the third quarter of 2008, with an adjusted EBITDA margin of 54.0%.  Passenger traffic decreased 15.4% to 3.0 million. Domestic traffic decreased 13.8% and international traffic decreased 25.0%. The suspension of Aviacsa operations since Jul 6, 2009, was ...

U.S. Airlines Industry – Industry Outlook

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 26th, 2009) Writes:
The U.S. Airlines industry has gone through several ups and downs in the past five years. Major negative influences on the industry included skyrocketing oil prices since 2005, economic recession in the U.S. since 2008, global economic downturn in 2009 and the "swine flu" outbreak. The airlines industry is cyclical and sensitive to a number of key drivers, the most prominent of which is the world price of crude oil. Since the beginning of 2009, prices of crude oil have been half of what they had been the year before, creating some relief for airlines. However, some industry operators hedged their fuel contracts at higher rates and are still paying the price. Many of the top airlines in the industry have responded by reducing services and aircraft fleet sizes, introducing new fees and higher fuel surcharges and reducing the number of people employed. Even with the price ...
