International Stem Cell Corporation (ISCO.OB) to Collaborate with Scripps Research Institute in Stem Cell Research

QualityStocks (November 20th, 2009) Writes:

Today, International Stem Cell Corporation announced that it will collaborate with renowned stem cell researcher Jeanne F. Loring, Ph.D. and the Scripps Research Institute (located in La Jolla, CA) to study parthenogenetic stem cells and their potentially derived therapeutic cells. The study expands the company’s mission to generate data necessary to understand these cells and move them closer to the clinic.

ISCO has perfected a process using unfertilized human eggs to creating human stem cells. These “parthenogenetic” stem cells allow immune-matching to large segments of the population. ISCO’s process allows the company to avoid the ethical debate regarding the use of human embryos.

Company scientists have derived a type of cell found in the human eye from parthenogenetic stem cells that may have application in the treatment of macular degeneration, a common eye disease. Dr. Loring and ISCO will study these cells as part of the collaboration.

Markets continued their strong performance this week in the absence of any major market driving earnings or economic reports, as the broad based buying that characterized the previous week continued and led to gains in all of the major indices. All told, the Dow added 2.5% on the week, gaining 247 points to close at 10,270, up 17.0% on the year. The Nasdaq posted a 2.6% gain on the week, closing at 2,167 to extend its yearly gains to 37.5%, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 gained 2.3% and 1.0% respectively, bringing their yearly gains to 21.1% and 17.4%.

Equity markets carried the momentum from the previous week’s session, as the thin economic calendar and lack of significant earnings reports provided little incentive for investors to slow their buying activities.

Markets rebounded last week, on the strength of upbeat productivity and manufacturing reports that led to solid gains in all of the major indices. Despite news that the unemployment rate had hit its highest levels in 25 years, the Dow managed to end the week up 310 points, gaining 3.2% on the week to close at 10,023, up 14.2% on the year. The Nasdaq posted a gain of 3.3%, closing at 2112 and extending its yearly gains to 34%, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 advanced 3.2% and 3.1% respectively on the week to bring their YTD performance to 18.4% and 16.2%.

BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (BCLI.OB) Announces Superior Stem Cell Treatments

QualityStocks (November 9th, 2009) Writes:

Today, BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics Inc. took the opportunity to announce that the company’s therapeutic treatment for neurodegenerative diseases displayed superior results to other current potential stem cell treatments in a recently conducted study.

The Israel Medical Association Journal published a scientific paper, authored by Ofer Sadan, Eldad Melamed and Daniel Offen from Tel Aviv University, showing the migratory capacity of Neurotrophic Factor Stem Cells (NTF-SC) in animal models of Parkinson’s and Huntington diseases. The study demonstrated that in a rat model for Parkinson’s disease, the efficacy of NTF-SC was superior in behavior, biochemical and histological indices to that of mesenchymal stem cells. The complete study and scientific paper are available on Brainstorm’s website at http://www.brainstorm-cell.com/_Uploads/47Sadan2009.pdf.

Professor Daniel Offen, Brainstorm’s chief scientific advisor, commented, “The results of this study show that the NTF-SC based treatment is efficacious due to NTF secretion and the stem cell’s migratory capabilities. Since our novel technology

Markets finally snapped their winning streak last week, as weakness in housing markets and durable goods orders led to broad-based declines in all of the major indices. All told, the Dow surrendered 155 points on the week to close at 9665, down 1.6% on the week but up 10.1% on the year. The Nasdaq lost 2.0% on the week to close at 2090, up 32.6% on the year, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 posted losses of 2.2% and 3.1% respectively, paring their yearly gains to 15.6% and 19.9%.
