Tea and sugar not just for cricket fans anymore

Jason G. Wulterkens (August 27th, 2009) Writes:

Instead, they’re also a commodity trader’s best friend.

FT laid out the case nicely on Thursday for why tea–which is already trading at an all-time high–may indeed have further to go:

“Traders now fear that the poor monsoon in India [one of the world's top exporters along with Kenya and Sri Lanka] and scanty rains in Kenya’s Rift Valley will cut output in the second half of the year.”

Meanwhile, raw sugar futures, which have surged some 90% this year already, may also have more upside given a global supply deficit (due to drought in India and excess rain in Brazil), growing demand as well as El-Nino related weather effects hitting India, the second largest producer.

Millicom Seeks to Lower Leverage – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (July 9th, 2009) Writes:

Millicom is Consolidating its Balance Sheet Millicom International Cellular S.A. (MICC), a Luxemburg-based leading global wireless service provider in various emerging markets, is exploring all options to improve its highly leveraged balance sheet.

The company had approximately $2.2 billion of total debt and $729 million of cash & cash equivalent at the end of the first quarter 2009. Management has taken several decisions, the first of which is to reduce its capital expenditure.

Historically, Millicom has benefited from the huge capital expenditure it had undertaken to expand and upgrade networks, which resulted in significant subscriber growth and record revenue. Since a major part of fiscal 2008 capital spending was earmarked to improve network coverage, it is expected that the company will now benefit from service expansion.

Management has stated that capital spending will decrease to $850 million in 2009, compared to $1.43 billion in the previous year, improving the company’s ability

Surging ‘frontier gauge’ a red flag for risk?

Jason G. Wulterkens (July 1st, 2009) Writes:

Interesting piece on Bloomberg about how rising frontier markets may indeed signal the death knell for the 2Q global equity rally.  Much like a pendulum moving out and then back, the rally may be peaking along with the recent rise by illiquid assets.  Think of equities alone as having their own ‘risk curve’; that is to say, the further out on the curve you go, the riskier the asset, and presumably the higher the potential yield.  Greater market liquidity at any given time will generally correlate with further movement on the curve.  So as green shoots sprouted this spring and into the summer, and as the VIX begin to wilt, investors’ thirst for something a little further out on the curve has been increasingly hard to quench.

MSCI’s frontier index has risen 21% since April 30, including its best month ever in May, while the emerging market index

Words from the (investment) wise for the week that was (June 22 – 28, 2009)

Prieur du Plessis (June 28th, 2009) Writes:

“Words from the Wise” this week comes to you in a shortened format as I do not have access to my normal research resources while on the road in Europe (also see my post “Gone A.W.O.L. - to Slovenia and Switzerland“). Although very little commentary is provided, a full dose of excerpts from interesting news items and quotes from market commentators is included.

While investors’ hopes of an economic recovery might have got ahead of reality, the cartoonists continually reminded us of worrisome issues …
