Zacks Bull and Bear of the Day Highlights: Petrobras, St. Jude Medical, Motorola Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp. and Alcatel-Lucent – Press Releases

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 24th, 2009) Writes:

For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL – November 24, 2009 – Zacks Equity Research highlights Petrobras (PBR) as the Bull of the Day and St. Jude Medical (STJ) the Bear of the Day. In addition, Zacks Equity Research provides analysis on Motorola Inc.(MOT), Sprint Nextel Corp.(S) and Alcatel-Lucent (ALU).

Full analysis of all these stocks is available at http://at.zacks.com/?id=5506

Here is a synopsis of all five stocks:

Bull of the Day:

Petrobras (PBR), the largest integrated energy firm in Brazil, stands to benefit from its country's economic growth and huge pre-salt oil reserves. The company recently reported a better-than-expected third-quarter, helped by strong downstream results that more than offset the sharp decline in commodity prices.

Near- to medium-term concerns include the uncertain commodity-price scenario, significant capital investment requirements, and Brazil's proposed new oil and gas regulatory framework. However, given its strong pipeline

Another Price Cut for Palm – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 23rd, 2009) Writes:
Palm Inc.’s (PALM) new smartphone, Pixi -- a lighter and cheaper version of the Pre -- can now be bought for just $24.99. Both Wal-Mart (WMT) stores and Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) have slashed the price of the new Pixi phone by 75% from the original $100 after the Pixi went on sale last week at Sprint Nextel Corp. (S). Amazon has also cut the price of Palm’s Pre to $79 from $99. The price cut may attract consumers in the coming holiday season, however we remain unsure about the future of Palm. Moreover such steep price cuts confirm our view that both the Pre and the Pixi are just not selling in a market crowded by devices such as Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, Motorola’s (MOT) Droid and Research In Motion’s (RIMM) BlackBerry. Palm’s Pixi and Pre are still available via ...

Motorola Boosts iDEN Business – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 23rd, 2009) Writes:
Motorola Inc. (MOT) has decided to purchase iDEN base station assets of the privately held RadioFrame Networks Inc. The iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network) technology allows cell phone calls to move on the same network as communication from two-way radios. In general, this technology resembles walkie-talkie features on cell phones. Financial terms of this deal have not been disclosed so far. Motorola itself is the pioneer of the iDEN technology that RadioFrame had licensed for its base station products.   The main reason for this acquisition is the superior iDEN-based base station products of RadioFrame that are lower cost and more power efficient. This proposed acquisition will enhance Motorola's portfolio of multi-channel base stations products that are optimized to support non-contiguous spectrum allocations in the special mobile radio business. Motorola may use RadioFrame’s lower-cost iDEN architecture into entirely separated spectrum bands that are allocated to the wireless ...

Palm Pixi Coming Next Month – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 27th, 2009) Writes:
Palm Inc.’s (PALM) new smartphone called Pixi, a lighter and cheaper version of the Palm Pre will be available via Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) beginning Nov 15 for just $99.99. The phone will come with a two-year contract after a $50 instant rebate and a $100 mail-in rebate. The phone will also be available through Best Buy (BBY), RadioShack (RSH) and Wal-Mart (WMT) stores.   Palm’s Pixi runs on Palm's WebOS. The phone has many features including 8 gigabytes of built-in memory, an exposed QWERTY keyboard and personalization features. However, it does not support Wi-Fi capabilities.   Alhough Palm has priced the Pixi competitively to attract more customers, we remain unsure about the future of Pixi. Amazon (AMZN) currently sells the Pre with a two-year contract at just $99. Sprint started selling the Pre smart phone in June and currently sells it for ...

RadioShack Delivers in Q3 – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 26th, 2009) Writes:
RadioShack Corp. (RSH) announced its third quarter results today. Net revenues came in at $990 million, down 3.1% year over year. However, this was better than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $981 million. The year-over-year reduction in sales is primarily due to a 2.9% decline in comparable same-store sales for company-operated stores and kiosks in the reported quarter compared to the prior-year quarter.   Segment wise, revenues from company-operated store declined 3.5% year over year, Kiosks sales declined 17.8% year over year, whereas revenues from Other services increased 13.5% year over year. Acquisition of RadiosShack de Mexico in December 2008 has significantly contributed to the Other services segment. Product category wise, sales declines in digital-to-analog converter boxes, laptop computers, batteries, wireless accessories, and GPS products.  On the other hand, the company generated increased revenues from Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) postpaid wireless business, increased sales of prepaid wireless handsets ...

BREW Gains Momentum – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 16th, 2009) Writes:
The BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) technology platform is getting increasing acceptance among global broadband service providers. BREW is a proprietary technology solution developed by Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM). This is a mobile handset platform supporting both high-end feature-rich smart-phones as well as low-end ordinary mobile phones that are intended to drive several wireless data applications. BREW technology enables mobile service providers to generate revenues from different value-added services. BREW solutions will help customers to access 3D mobile games, social networking, ring-tones and other productivity tools.   As of now, BREW has been commercially deployed by more than 60 carriers in over 25 countries. Qualcomm claims that the platform generated more than $2 billion revenues for the application developers as of March 2009. Verizon Wireless (VZ) is so far the largest telecom operator that deployed BREW mobile platform. Last July, the carrier renewed its BREW contract with ...

PALM Earnings Preview – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 14th, 2009) Writes:
Palm Inc. (PALM) is set to announce its first-quarter of fiscal 2010 results on September 17, 2009.   Palm had not provided any specific guidance for the first quarter, but expected gross margin on an adjusted basis to be above 30% for the long term. The company also expects operating expense to increase from the fourth quarter level as it starts aggressive marketing of Palm Pre and expansion of product development and sales & marketing capabilities. The company expects to generate positive cash flow in the second half of fiscal 2010. Although, the fourth quarter was good, with the company beating the Zacks Consensus expectations, revenue declined by 70.7% from last year and the loss increased year over in the quarter. We do not expect PALM to become profitable in the next three to four years. It is also likely that the company will have a tough ...

Femtocell – The Emerging Wave – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 11th, 2009) Writes:
Femtocell is quickly emerging as a fundamental technology enabler in the deployment of next-generation (3G/4G) wireless network infrastructure. A femtocell is a small cellular base station, typically designed for use in a residential or small business environment. This access point communicates to the wireless service providers’ network through a broadband connection.  Using femtocell, a wireless operator can improve both coverage and capacity especially in an indoor area where access would otherwise be limited or unavailable, in a highly cost effective way. This will reduce the carriers’ operating costs as well as capital expenditure.  The U.S. is likely to undergo a massive wave of 3G femtocell from the end of 2009. Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) is claiming that it will be the first telecom operators to introduce 3G femtocell in the U.S., beating AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ). Although Sprint Nextel is providing 2G ...
