Dow Gearing Up to Divest – Analyst Blog

Dow Chemical Company (DOW) is planning to sell more non-core assets in 2010 to pay off debt from its $16.5 billion acquisition of rival Rohm and Haas in April of this year. It is planning further debt reductions of about $12 billion. Dow stated that it plans to lighten its debt load and achieve its financial targets ahead of schedule.

The Rohm and Haas acquisition is proving to be positive for Dow, which is expected to consolidate higher-margin and higher-growth specialty businesses and reduce volatility in earnings and cash flow, going forward. Dow is aiming to nearly double margins and quadruple earnings per share while reducing debt in the coming years.

The company has predicted earnings of $4 to $4.50 per share in 2012 (up from last year’s $1.82) to be achieved through a mix of growth synergies as well as restructuring and cost synergies. The company had achieved cost synergies of over $1 billion in the first nine months of 2009. Earnings of 24 cents in the third quarter of 2009 (significantly better than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 9 cents and 5 cents reported in the previous quarter) were primarily driven by cost reduction and asset sales.

The new business structure is expected to drive Dow’s revenue by more than 10% per annum. Dow expects a greater focus on emerging markets including Southeast Asia, India, Latin America, China and Eastern Europe to contribute about 35% to total revenues in 2012. Management has also projected EBITDA margin expansion from 12% in the recent past to 20% over time.

Recently, Dow divested its Powder Coatings business to Akzo Nobel N.V. (AKZOY) - a leading producer of paints and coatings, based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands - for an undisclosed amount. Including this deal, Dow stated its divestiture activities to be on target to yield more than $3.5 billion in gross proceeds. The company is also planning to divest its Styron business next by the first quarter of 2010. As a part of its restructuring plan, Dow plans to divest 10 to 15 other businesses, which range in size between $100 million and $300 million in annual revenue.

Dow is also likely to benefit from cutting its stake in its basic chemicals business as part of its plan to focus on its more profitable Specialty Chemicals business. Recently, Dow had announced that its subsidiary Kow Kokam LLC acquired nearly all assets of lithium rechargeable battery maker Kokam America Inc. The company also announced the transfer to Dow of collective assets from High Power Lithium, a company focused on the development of technology for use in all lithium ion batter applications. Terms of neither agreement were disclosed.

Mechel Recovers – Analyst Blog

Mechel OAO (MTL), one of Russia’s leading mining and metallurgical companies, has reported results for its second quarter and first half of 2009.

For the first half of 2009, Mechel reported revenues of $2.4 billion, down 54% from the year-ago period. The company reported net losses of $471.4 million in contrast to net income of $41.1 billion year over year. However, Mechel managed a net income of $219.3 million in the reported quarter after posting losses in the last two quarters. Revenues inched up 8.6% sequentially to $1.3 billion on higher sales volumes. Before this, revenues were impacted by weak demand for steel and coking coal as well as foreign exchange losses.

The Steel segment generated 57% of revenues, which slipped 53.5% year over year to $1.40 billion in the first half of 2009. Unfavorable market conditions and low demand for steel from the end consumer markets – especially auto, construction and machinery − resulted in the decline.

Revenues of $754.7 million in the quarter reflected an improvement of 17.3% from the previous quarter on steel sales volumes picking up slightly. During the first half of 2009, net losses in the Steel segment amounted to $321.5 million against net income of $467.4 million in the same period of 2008. However, Mechel reported a net income of $36.5 million in the quarter against net losses of $467.6 million in the year ago period. Steel production was up 27% to 1.4 billion tons in the quarter while coke output increased 34% to 723 million tons.

In 2009, Mechel foresees demand for steel from the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The company plans to operate facilities at 100% capacity.

By May 2009, Mechel had increased steel-making capacity utilization to 94%, metallurgical commodity products capacity utilization to 95%, including rolled products capacity to about 99%, hardware capacity to about 74%, while forgings and stampings crossed 58%.

The Mining segment generated 27% revenues during the first half of 2009. Sales in the segment plunged 60.5% year-over-year to $674.8 million, driven by a sharp decline in the demand for coking coal. EBIDTA margin of 23.3% more than halved from 51% in the year-ago period driven by higher production costs. In the latest quarter, revenues declined 4% to $330.6 million. Net income was $49.7 million in contrast to a net loss of $65.8 million.

Sequentially, production of coal was down 13% to 3 million tons. Coking coal production was up 19% to 1.2 million tons. Production of steam coal was down 27% year-over-year to 1.76 million tons.

Mechel is banking on Asian markets, particularly, China, Japan and South Korea. In June 2009, Mechel through its subsidiary Mechel Trading AG signed a long-term contract with South Korean Hyundai Steel to supply 300,000 tons of coking coal per annum from 2010. The company has a total supply contract of 2.0 million tons of coking coal and 2.3 million tons of steam coal in 2009 produced at its Yakutugol and Southern Kuzbass mines.

The Power segment produced 10% of revenues, which totaled $256.5 million, down 28.2% from the same quarter of the previous year. Mechel reported a net loss of $4.3 million compared with net income of $7.2 million in the year ago period. The economic crisis resulted in an overall demand for electricity. Moreover, Mechel’s power is expensive as compared to the liberalized electricity in Russia. Quarter on quarter, revenues were down 14.3% to $114.8 million and net losses amounted to $4.6 million.

The Ferroalloy segment yielded 5% of revenues, or $131 million, down 52.9% year over year. Mechel reported a net loss of $202.6 million compared with a net income of $38.9 million. However, revenues increased 43.2% quarter on quarter to $77.2 million. Net income of $126.1 million was driven by higher production costs and lower product prices. Mechel is increasing its output of high quality ferrochrome, an alloy required to produce stainless and special steel.

Mechel has a large capital-spending program. It reported capital expenditures of $223.2 million in the first half of 2009. Total debts were about $6.0 billion in the first half. Higher debts resulting in greater interest burden are a drag on the company’s profitability. Mechel has not provided any financial guidance for the rest of 2009.

Talisman Net Slumps on Lower Prices – Analyst Blog

Canadian energy explorer Talisman Energy Inc. (TLM) reported marginally better-than-expected third quarter results, helped by in-line production volumes. Earnings per share from continuing operations, excluding one-time items came in at 15 Canadian cents (14 cents), a penny above the Zacks Consensus Estimate. However, on a year-over-year basis, Talisman’s adjusted earnings per share slumped approximately 77%, while revenues declined 42.3% to C$1.5 billion, hurt by lower prices of oil and natural gas.

Volume Analysis

Production during the quarter was down approximately 9.5% from the year-ago level to 401 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOE/d), reflecting asset sales in Western Canada and maintenance downtime.

Oil & liquids production during the quarter was down 16.9% to 192.3 thousand barrels per day (MBbl/d), or 48% of total volumes. Volumes in North America, the U.K., Scandinavia , and other international regions were down 23.4%, 31.2%, 4.4%, and 30.5% to 31.4 MBbl/d, 71.3 MBbl/d, 30.1 MBbl/d, and 14.4 MBbl/d respectively. Oil & liquids production from Southeast Asia was, however, up 30.4% to 45.1 MBbl/d.

Talisman’s third quarter natural gas volumes were modestly down, approximately 1.2% to 1.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was down approximately 8.1% to 790 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) in North America and 62.2% in the U.K. to 14 MMcf/d. But volumes were up 111.1% in Scandinavia and 16.4% in Southeast Asia to 38 MMcf/d and 411 MMcf/d, respectively.

Realized Prices

During the quarter, the company’s realized commodity prices were down 42.9% from the year-ago quarter to C$50.29 per barrels of oil equivalent (BOE), reflecting significantly weaker oil and natural gas prices across the board.

Overall natural gas prices decreased approximately 50.3% year over year to C$5.01 per Mcf. In North America, unit realization declined 55.9% to C$4.05 per Mcf. Natural gas prices were down 67.8% in the U.K. and 44.1% in Southeast Asia to C$3.24 per Mcf and C$6.92 per Mcf, respectively, while Scandinavia experienced a 37.4% decline in realized prices to C4.83 per Mcf.

Oil & liquids realizations averaged C$72.24 per barrel, down 36.2% from the year-ago level. Prices realized in North America, U.K., Scandinavia, and Southeast Asian regions were C$60.17 per barrel (down 42.2% year over year), C$74.59 per barrel (down 35.2%), C$76.53 per barrel (down 31.9%) and C$74.30 per barrel (down approximately 36.8%), respectively.

Acreage Addition

Talisman added 90,000 acres of properties in Pennsylvania's Marcellus shale region, while boosting land holdings in the Montney region of British Columbia by 80,000 acres.

Cash Flows & Capital Expenditure

Cash flows from continuing operations during the quarter totaled C$828 million, down 46.6% from the year-earlier quarter, while the company spent C$871 million on exploration and development activities.

Balance Sheet

At the end of the quarter, Talisman had cash and cash equivalents of approximately C$2.0 billion and long-term debt of $3.9 billion, representing a debt-to-capitalization ratio of 33.5%.

Guidance

Management hiked its 2009 capital budget by 25% to C$4.5 billion, primarily to increase drilling on its shale properties and acquire new exploration lands. Talisman is targeting average production of 423,000 – 426,000 BOE/d for the year, slightly down from its previous 430,000 BOE/d forecast, as it expects to sell some non-core oil and gas assets. The company further informed that it plans to reorganize its North American operations into separate conventional and unconventional (focusing exclusively on shale gas) assets.

Missouri-based Peabody Energy (BTU) is the world’s largest private sector coal mining company, owning majority interests in more than 30 mines in the U.S. and Australia.

The company enjoys strong leverage to emerging Asian markets via its Australian operations. Of late, it has set up a new office in Singapore, which will serve as the hub for its trading and brokerage activities in Southeast Asia. This will further strengthen Peabody’s access to high-growth seaborne coal markets in the region, especially China and India, which are expected to be the demand drivers in both the near and long terms.

Coal is assumed to be the fastest growing fuel over the next 20 years and China and India will constitute over 50% of that demand growth. Peabody intends to cash on the opportunity leveraging its global platform and low-cost operating base. The opening of a new trading office in Singapore validates that.

Peabody's size, quality reserves, strong balance sheet, geographic diversity and impressive management are significant competitive advantages. Although the company warrants a higher multiple than its peers, the valuation remains a bit stretched amid all the uncertainties and lack of visible near-term catalysts. Hence, we maintain our Neutral recommendation for the company.

Avnet Expands Business in Asia – Analyst Blog

Avnet Inc. (AVT) recently entered into a distribution agreement with India-based MosChip Semiconductor Technology Ltd.

Based in Phoenix, Arizona, Avnet is one of the world’s largest distributors of electronic components and computer products. MosChip provides high performance multimedia and connectivity solutions for consumer, industrial and computing applications.

According to the deal, Avnet’s Electronics Marketing unit will distribute MosChip products throughout Asia. The distribution agreement spans Australia, China, India, Korea, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. MosChip products include Network Appliance Processors and co-processors, audio / video processors, USB and PCI / PCI Express connectivity semiconductors.

Last month, Avnet reported weak fourth-quarter results as its top line remained challenged by adverse business conditions amid the global economic slowdown. The company’s organic growth continues to be lackluster and it continues to expand only through acquisitions.

Although both bookings and billings increased during the period and backlog was up for the first time in several quarters, rival Arrow Electronics (ARW) maintained that the weakness in top line is yet to bottom out and visibility still remains limited. In particular, business conditions in Europe remain challenging.

Management stated that growth in Asia continues to offset sales decline in other regions. Business in Asia is associated with lower selling prices and lower costs. While this might help margins in the short term, it would not be sustainable until Avnet sees some strength in the high-margin Americas and EMEA regions.

With the search business sorted out through the Microsoft (MSFT) deal, Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) is beginning to focus on other areas. The company announced two new initiatives to boost revenue.

The first is the expansion of its sales force in Southeast Asia. Internet usage in the region has been growing rapidly over the last few years, driving increasing interest in online advertising. Online advertising industries in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are expected to grow around 60% between 2008 and 2010.

The newly appointed direct sales team will join forces with the existing Singapore-based team to develop localized marketing campaigns in Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam. The idea is to sell online advertising in form of display, search or through a mobile platform. We think this is a pertinent move and it is time Yahoo started cementing relationships in the region.

The second initiative is designed to attract U.S. customers who have been hit hard by the recession. It is a new website called Yahoo Deals (http://deals.yahoo.com) that provides a host of information about bargain agreements. It also offers coupons for groceries, local stores and online printable form for a large number of products, such as clothing, beauty, baby, computers, video games, flowers, gifts, automotive products, electronics and gardening.

A separate tab called Weekly Ads directs users to special offers by big local brands. The website also enumerates special offers for Visa card holders at local restaurants, retailers and service providers. Customers who wish to purchase coupons and take a print out later can save the coupons to their own account. Yahoo recently conducted a survey that proved the growing demand for coupons and limited availability. We believe this website is likely to attract many customers in the current market environment.

New CEO Carol Bartz seems to know what she wants. Despite weak results for some time now, Yahoo had been clinging on to all business lines. Bartz was quick to generate cash from the search business and is now giving the company the much-needed direction. We think the above measures will strengthen Yahoo’s revenue opportunities and provide the company with tools to generate cash in a weak environment.

The second-largest cellular carrier in Russia, VimpelCom (VIP), announced the commercial launch of its wireless operation in Vietnam under its Beeline brand. The company will initially roll out services in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Danang, covering a population of over 15 million. This follows the launch of the company's mobile operation in Cambodia in May 2009.

In July 2008, VimpelCom signed a definitive agreement to establish GTEL-Mobile, a mobile telecom joint-venture company for constructing GSM-based wireless networks in Vietnam. The other parties in this joint-venture pact are Global Telecommunications Corporation, a state-owned enterprise, and GTEL TSC, a subsidiary of GTEL.

Under the deal terms, VimpelCom has acquired 40% interest in GTEL-Mobile with GTEL and GTEL TSC retaining 51% and 9% stake, respectively. In early 2009, VimpelCom obtained a license from the Vietnamese government to build and operate a GSM cellular network under the joint-venture.

VimpelCom remains the second-largest wireless operator in Russia with over 25% market share. Nevertheless, the company has a higher projected growth rate than its nearest competitor, Mobile Telesystems (MBT) as it continues to demonstrate the ability to succeed in emerging markets bolstered by sustained subscriber growth. Besides maintaining its strong market position in the rapidly-maturing Moscow metropolitan area, VimpelCom has instituted expansion activities in regions outside of Russia. As part of this strategy, the company is currently exploring business opportunities in relatively under-penetrated incipient markets in Southeast Asia.

Being one of the fastest-growing economies (GDP growth of 6.2% in 2008) in Southeast Asia, Vietnam represents a significant growth prospect for VimpelCom with approximately 58% penetration in mobile telephony. The company will invest approximately $1 billion in the country over the next several years for the development of GSM-based wireless services. The GTEL-Mobile joint venture plans to cover over 40 provinces of Vietnam by the end of 2009, addressing a population of 41 million, translating into 48% penetration of the country's population.

We expect acquisitions and expansion opportunities in emerging markets to foster much of the company's growth moving forward. Consequently, we maintain our Buy rating for VimpelCom.

Mechel Steel (MTL), one of Russia’s leading mining and metallurgical companies, reported results for its first quarter ending March 31, 2009. Mechel reported consolidated net loss of $690.70 million, compared with consolidated net earnings of $500.00 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Net loss per share amounted to $1.72 in the quarter, compared with net earnings of $1.20 in the first quarter of 2008.

Revenues were down 49% year-over-year to $1.80 billion. The company attributed the decline to weak demand for steel and coking coal as well as foreign exchange losses.

The Steel segment generated 55% of revenues, which slipped 50% year over year to $643.20 million in the first quarter. Unfavorable market conditions and low demand for steel from the end consumer markets -- especially auto, construction and machinery -- resulted in the decline.

Net loss in the segment amounted to $358.10 million as against net income of $184 million in the year ago quarter. Production of steel was down 30% to 1.10 million tons and that of rolled products was down 22% to 1.00 million tons when compared to the production level of the year ago period.

In 2009, Mechel foresees demand for steel from the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The company plans to operate facilities at 100% capacities. By May 2009, Mechel had increased steel-making capacity utilization to 94%, metallurgical commodity products capacity utilization to 95%, including rolled products capacity to about 99%, hardware capacity to about 74%, while forgings and stampings crossed 58%.

The Mining segment generated 29% revenues. Sales in the segment plunged 60% year-over-year to $344.20 million driven by a sharp decline in demand for coking coal. EBIDTA margin in the segment was 10.6% compared with 48.8% in the year-ago period driven by higher production costs. Reckoned year over year, production of coal and coking coal more than halved to 3.40 million tones and 1.00 million ton, respectively. Production of steam coal was down 19% year-over-year to 2.40 million tons.

Mechel is banking on Asian markets, particularly, China, Japan and South Korea. In June 2009, Mechel through its subsidiary Mechel Trading AG signed a long-term contract with South Korean Hyundai Steel to supply 300,000 tons of coking coal per annum from 2010. The company has a total supply contract of 2.00 million tons of coking coal and 2.30 million tons of steam coal in 2009 produced at its Yakutugol and Southern Kuzbass mines.

The Power segment produced 12% of revenues, which totaled 138.20 million, down 28% from the same quarter of the previous year. Net income was negligible at $0.20 million compared with net income of $15.00 million in the year ago quarter. The economic crisis resulted in an overall demand for electricity. Moreover, Mechel’s power is expensive as compared with the liberalized electricity in Russia.

The Ferroalloy segment yielded 4% of revenues, or $53.9 million. Net loss of $328.70 million was driven by higher production costs and lower product prices. Mechel is increasing its output of high quality ferrochrome, an alloy required to produce stainless and special steels.

Mechel has a large capital-spending program. It reported capital expenditures of $96.10 million in the first quarter of 2009. Total debts were $5.8 billion in the quarter. Higher debts resulting in greater interest burden are a drag on the company’s profitability.

Mechel has not provided any financial guidance for the rest of 2009. There is no update on the refinancing the $1.5 billion bridge loan and a $2.0 billion loan which had been used to acquire the Yakutugol coal mine in 2007. We maintain our Hold rating on the stock.

Tyco Electronics Searches for Balance between Growth and Profitability

Tyco Electronics (TEL) is a leader in the fragmented passive components market. The company is the number-one supplier into the auto and industrial markets, and the number-two supplier into the computing and telecom/datacom markets (company sources). TEL's financial muscle and scale of operations puts it in a strong position with respect to other players, and also makes it a more suitable supplier choice in the current market environment.

The company has operations all over the globe, which negates a dependence on any particular geography. However, it is significantly leveraged to the automotive and computing verticals, which are relatively low-growth markets. TEL has a smaller exposure to the higher-growth, more volatile handset and consumer markets. Management will likely find a strategy to balance growth and stability, but the primary focus for the time being is improving profitability.

The Network Solutions segment was a mixed bag in Q1. The company saw some positive currency impact in the last quarter. The energy market in North America grew double-digits, but the softness in Asia and EMEA resulted in a -11.8% decline overall. Management stated that the company was gaining share in North America, as a result of its new marketing program and the success of the newly introduced high-voltage product line.

The longer-term drivers in this market include energy efficient and alternative energy solutions. Tyco's products are targeted at these areas within the energy market. Therefore, while the recession is expected to slow down the business, growth is inevitable in the post-recession period.

The service provider section of the network solutions segment grew double-digits sequentially. Management focus in this area is on the fiber-to-the-home technology. While customers are continuing to invest in FTTH and other broadband wireless projects, spending on upgrades and maintenance of existing networks is undergoing a temporary decline, especially at U.S. customers.

Currency had a positive impact on sales in the last quarter. Building networks revenue also witnessed a sharp decline in Q2. The lower revenue was attributed to the slowdown in commercial construction, as well as deferred project spending stemming from IT budget cuts.

Undersea telecom had a very strong quarter. This is a project-driven business, so it tends to be lumpy. The increase in the last quarter was on account of certain projects in the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia that finally took off. We are encouraged to note that margins in this business continued to increase in Q2. Management stated that orders were holding up, and the company continued to carry over a billion dollars worth of backlog. This is a relatively longer-cycle business, lending some visibility in the currently uncertain market.

Tyco bagged three new projects in the third quarter of 2008, revenue recognition from which is expected to continue into 2010. Segment revenue is currently expected to grow regain momentum through the remainder of 2009.

A trillion here and a trillion there...pretty soon, you're talking about real money!

Boeing (BA) just released its latest "Current Market Outlook" (CMO), which analyzes the past and future demand for commercial jet aircraft with 30 seats or more. One of the first things you find as you flip through the pages is that Boeing didn't agree with Airbus (imagine that)!

According to Boeing, its 2000 forecast indicated that the demand for aircraft through 2019 would be split -- 4% Large, 25% Twin-aisle and 71% Single-aisle, while Airbus believed it would be 9% Large (hence the A-380), 35% Twin-aisle and 55% Single-Aisle. So far the actual demand (according to Boeing) has been 2% Large, 23% Twin-aisle and 75% Single-aisle.

For the aforementioned forecast period -- 2000 through 2019 -- Boeing believed that demand would total 17,318 units, while Airbus -- with more larger aircraft in its forecast -- thought it was going to be 14,661 units. Either way, that's still a lot of airplanes, as the average deliveries/year ranges from 733 for Airbus to 866 for Boeing (these numbers are not just for Airbus and Boeing aircraft, however; they also include appropriate types from Bombardier and Embraer (ERJ) and later Comac, Mitsubishi and Sukhoi...plus others reckless enough to join the fray).

Here, now, are some one-liners from the CMO for the next 20 years:

Since 1978, world-wide air travel has grown at 5.3% per annum.
The 20-year forecast is for the world economy to grow at 3.1%, the number of passenger miles to climb at 4.1%, airline traffic to expand at 4.9% and cargo traffic to weigh in at 5.4%.
Since 1988, air travel has climbed by over 2.5%, frequency has grown by more than 2.0%, non-stop markets have expanded by almost exactly 2.0% and the average airplane size has shrunk just a smidgen.
Between 2009 and 2028, the airlines will need some 29,000 aircraft -- equaling 1,450/year, of which 2,100 will be regional jets, 19,460 will single-aisle, 6,700 will be twin-aisle and 740 will be large. All of this translates into revenues of $3.2 trillion over a score of years, for an average of $160 billion/annum.
At end of the 20-year period, 16,800 aircraft will have been delivered to take care of growth in demand, 12,200 will be replacements and there will still be 6,600 aircraft that are older than 20 years.
Over the 20 years, the percentage shift in the makeup of the world-wide fleet will be that Regional goes from 16% to 6%, Single-aisle goes from 60% to 68%, Twin-aisle goes from 19% to 23% and Large goes from 5% to 3% (of course, Airbus probably doesn't agree with this).
Over the last 20 years, there have been dramatic improvements in airplane efficiency: the number of seats/airplane are up 5.4%, the stage length soared by 87.3%, utilization rose by 31.5% and the number of revenue passenger miles climbed by 117.0%.
The emerging markets are driving economic expansion, with China leading the way at 7.2% GDP growth, followed by Southwest Asia (6.1%), Africa (4.9%), Southeast Asia (4.6%) and Asia-Pacific (4.4%); again, for comparative purposes, the World is at 3.1% (and North America is at just 2.1%); all this translates into World average air travel growth of 4.9%, of which Asia-Pacific -- including China -- will experience growth in air travel of 6.9%.

Is all this one of the reasons the following companies have risen so far from their 52-week low?

Zhongpin Inc. (HOGS), the China-based meat and food processing company, grew revenue by 41.5% in the first quarter and continued to surprise on estimates despite tough economic conditions. The stock is still cheap, trading at just 5.8x forward earnings.

Zhongpin distributes pork, pork products and fruits and vegetables in 20 Chinese provinces and 4 cities with special political status through over 3,097 retail outlets. The company also exports to the European Union and Southeast Asia.

4 Surprises in a Row

On May 11, Zhongpin reported first-quarter results which surprised on estimates by 10%. It was the 4th consecutive surprise in a row for the company. Net income was $9.7 million, or 33 cents per share, compared to $7.3 million, or 24 cents, in the year ago period. Analysts expected just 30 cents.

Revenue growth was fueled by demand for pork products as well as increased production capacity due to new facilities that were added in 2008.

Prepared meats were the strongest segment, jumping 83.3% to $22 million from $12 million a year ago. Chilled pork revenue climbed 56.9% while frozen pork grew 9.5%.

Fruits and vegetables are the smallest segment and accounted for just 1% of total revenue in the quarter. Revenue growth was flat compared to a year ago. However, a new production facility opened in April which will bring the total production up to 30,000 metric tons from 12,600 metric tons.

2009 Guidance Reaffirmed

In May, the company confirmed its 2009 EPS guidance in the range of $1.50 to $1.63 per share with revenue in the range of $780 million to $810 million.

Zhongpin doesn't expect the fears surrounding the swine flu to have a big impact on the year.

"While the pork industry experienced a negative impact in April due to the recent H1N1 virus outbreak in North America, we believe this impact will be short-lived," said Mr. Xianfu Zhu, CEO.

"In fact, as fears surrounding the virus have subsided and consumers are educated that the virus can not be contracted by consuming pork products, we have observed an increase in demand for pork and some firming of pork prices."

"As a result, we do not expect further negative impact from this issue on our revenue for the second quarter," he added.

Consensus Estimates Rise

Given the company's reaffirmation of guidance, covering analysts have been raising estimates for the full year. Consensus estimates climbed by 6 cents to $1.55 per share to be within the forecast range. Analysts expect year-over-year earnings growth of 31.36%.

Value Fundamentals

Zhongpin is a Zacks #2 Rank (buy) stock. It continues to have solid value characteristics. HOGS trades with a price-to-book of 1.54. It has a PEG ratio of 0.23. The company also has a stellar 1-year return on equity (ROE) of 20.71%.

It talks about Indonesia, and their past reliance on oil (they are the only member of OPEC in Southeast Asia). But other countries end up paying higher prices for oil because of lack of access and production. Taking steps like this are allowing countries to stay out of that battle. Its no surprise that leaders in alternative energies aren't who you'd think they'd be (Solar-Germany; Wind-Denmark, Spain). Hopefully, the U.S. and China will become the major drivers in the next push in this industry. January 23, 2009 ndash; A-Power (Nasdaq:APWR) continues to be one of the most overlooked and undervalued stocks in the market, we think, and its outlook is bolstered by its strengthening positions in China, and Southeast Asiarsquo;s burgeoning distributed power and wind energy businesses. Distributed Power Generation On the distributed power side of its business, its backlog is more than $600 million and demand continues to be driven by widespread brownouts and blackouts. Local power generation is critical for creating efficient, cost-effective power supply throughout China and Southeast Asia. APWR has recently announced a $150 million, 300MW, and a binding MOU for a $300 million, 600MW distributed generation system in Thailand. Wind Energy A-Power continues to make progress in its wind business, recently getting a huge validation of its efforts through an announced JV for gearbox manufacturing in China with GE Drivetrain Technologies. Note that GE is one of the largest turbine manufacturers in the world, and next to turbines, gearboxes are the most expensive component. This partnership should give A-Power a foothold into China and Southeast Asiarsquo;s massive wind market business. nbsp;It has also finished construction on a 310,000 square foot wind turbine production facility and has started constructing a second 290,000 square foot facility which will give it a combined annual capacity to produce more than 1,800MW of wind turbines. We estimate this represents about $1.9 billion in annual production capacity. Management is working to finalize an LOI for 380 2.5MW turbines, which, if and when it closes, will push the companyrsquo;s combined backlog well over $1 billion. An indication that the company is bullish on the prospects of closing on this LOI is its recent supply agreement signed with GE Drivetrain to supply it with more than 900 2.7MW gearboxes starting in 2010. Chinarsquo;s wind power potential is enormous. It has doubled its capacity every year for the past three years. In 2007 it surpassed a 5GW target three years ahead of schedule and last year it revised its 10GW target two years early. The Chinese government increased its 2020 projection from 30GW of installed wind capacity to 100GW. A-Power is well situated on the cusp of this expansion. An impressive fact that we have mentioned before, and is worth mentioning again, is that A-Power entered the wind business on the strength of cash flow from its distributed power business, which is a strong and growing business in its own right. Six global exchange-traded funds track Islamic indexes, according to Chicago-based data researcher Failaka.

Nasdaq OMX Indexes is about to break into the already crowded field of index providers targeting Islamic investors.

Versions of the flagship Nasdaq 100 Index and Nasdaq Biotechnology Index are to be launched in the first quarter 2009.

Dow Jones, MSCI, FTSE Group and financial services firms including HSBC and Citigroup have long lists of stock indexes, and to a more limited extent bond indexes, refashioned for the Islamic world.

Currently, there are six exchange-traded funds globally tracking Islamic indexes, according to Chicago-based data researcher Failaka.

Three are from Barclays Global Investors' European iShares ETF family based in London. The iShares track the MSCI Emerging Market Islamic, USA Islamic, and World Islamic equity indexes. BNP Paribas has an ETF based on the Dow Jones Islamic Titans Index, while Daiwa Securities launched an ETF based on a FTSE Sha'riah Japan 100 Japanese equity index.

As an exchange which a growing profile in the Middle East, Nasdaq has an immediate beachhead for its first Islamic indexes, in contrast to the stand-alone index providers.

Nasdaq recently rebranded the Dubai International Financial Exchange as Nasdaq Dubai, after purchasing a one-third stake in the exchange earlier in the year (see story here).

What's more, Dubai is the largest market in the world for structured products linked to Islamic law, according to Failaka.

Dubai is the largest part of an Islamic investing universe estimated at as much as $700 million globally. There are industry projections that it will grow to as much as $1 trillion in the next few years.

There has been a good deal of recent activity related to the Islamic indexes also.

Dow Jones recently released its first Islamic index for Southeast Asian equities, or the ASEAN counties (see story here).

Meanwhile, MSCI recently added both emerging market and frontier market sha'riah compliant indexes (see story here).

Nasdaq expects that the indexes will serve as the basis for products from both local Gulf players and international asset managers, said John Jacobs, chief marketing officer at Nasdaq.

While the Dubai market may be the most obvious market in which to introduce the planned Islamic versions of the Nasdaq 100 and Nasdaq Biotechnology indexes, Nasdaq expects the indexes to be popular in Southeast Asia also.

"The most populace part of the Muslim world is Southeast Asia, and lots of firms want to bring out Sha'riah compliant index products there too," Jacobs said.

MSCI Launches Frontier Islamic Indexes

MSCI expands its Islamic index series.

MSCI Barra is expanding the MSCI Global Islamic Indices to include small-cap emerging market stocks and a set of frontier market countries. With the addition of 16 frontier markets, the total number of MSCI Islamic country indexes will rise from 53 to 69.

Index providers have targeted the Islamic investing world as an area of growth for benchmark construction, as both institutions, retail and government investors across the Middle East and in Southeast Asia assume a higher profile. Dow Jones recently unveiled its first Shari'ah compliant benchmark for companies in Southeast Asia, and the total assets invested in Shari'ah compliant indexes is growing sharply.

The enhanced MSCI Islamic index series will now include the MSCI Emerging Markets Islamic Small Cap Indices, MSCI Emerging Markets Islamic Investable Market Indices, and MSCI Frontier Markets Islamic Indices. Calculation of the new indexes is expected to begin on Nov. 26.

MSCI also published the MSCI Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries Islamic Investable Market Index.

"The expansion of the MSCI Global Islamic Indices to cover Emerging Markets Small Cap and Frontier Markets countries offers institutional investors deeper coverage of the Islamic investment opportunity set," MSCI said in a statement.

New Islamic Index Launches For SE Asian Markets

The only licensee so far for the DJIM ASEAN is by a traditional equity fund manager, Malaysia-based Corston-Smith Asset Management.

Dow Jones Indexes launched the Dow Jones Islamic Market ASEAN Index on Monday, the first index to cover Shari'ah-compliant companies in six of the 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The DJIM ASEAN Index will serve as the basis for exchange-traded funds and other investment products. Islamic nations in the Middle East and in Southeast Asia are ramping up efforts to develop their local ETF marketplaces.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, four of the six countries covered by the new index, have already taken baby steps into ETF waters.

At the end of the third quarter, Singapore had five ETFs; Malaysia had three, Thailand had two, and Indonesia had one ETF portfolio, according to Barclays Global Investors' ETF Research and Implementation Strategy Team.

Among the four SE Asian nation's nascent ETF markets, there was a total of less than $1.5 billion invested in the ETFs, BGI data indicated.

iShares has a series of Shari'ah-compliant ETFs for the U.K., based on MSCI benchmarks. Deutsche Bank's x-trackers ETF family also listed in July three ETFs based on Standard & Poor's Shari'ah indexes, adding to its existing Dow Jones Islamic Market Titans 100 Index ETF.

The DJIM ASEAN Index is weighted by free-float market capitalization and includes 284 components. The top five components by float-adjusted market capitalization are Thailand-based oil and gas company PTT PCL; Malaysian industrial goods and services company Sime Darby; Singapore Airlines; Singapore Telecommunications; and Indonesia telecommunications firm Telekomunikasi Indonesia. The index is calculated in U.S. dollars and reviewed quarterly.

There are currently more than 75 investment product licensees with more than $7 billion in assets benchmarked to the Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes.

When visitors arrive at Singapore's Changi Airport, they get both an immigration card and an application form for opening a hedge fund.

This was one of the jokes making the rounds in 2007. The fact is that hedge funds in Singapore were growing fast since 2006. According to an article dated Feb 2007 from eFinancialCareers, "prime brokers are in hiring mode" - Barclays Capital, Citigroup, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley and UBS all hired for their Singapore prime brokerage operations in 2006.

By Nov 2007, Singapore serves as prime broking regional headquarters for Credit Suisse Group, Citigroup Inc and Barclays Capital plc, according to HedgeFund Intelligence. Citigroup and Morgan Stanley also opened Singapore prime brokerage offices in 2007, to service the fast-growing number of hedge funds in that market. Morgan Stanley, the top Singaporean prime broker by assets under management according to Eurekahedge, had previously been servicing its Singapore clients from Hong Kong.

As the growth of hedge funds slowed down due to the credit crisis, an article (download pdf) dated Feb 2008 pointed out that "their (referring to the prime brokers in Singapore) enthusiasm for growth is now waning". As reported on Oct 4^th, 2008, Morgan Stanley is looking at scaling back its prime-brokerage operation (detail). However others believe that "Asian hedge funds may be cold, but the Asian prime brokerage industry remains sizzling"(FINalternatives), indicated by Citi's move to add eight professionals to four Asia offices in Aug 2008, including transferring Danielle Vint to handle the prime brokerage's fixed-income desk in Singapore.

It is said that Citi has fired "the latest salvo in the prime brokerage talent wars in Asia". In Feb 2008, Merrill Lynch hired Aussie hedge fund CEO Jeffrey Levy for Asia prime brokerage, to join the firm's Singapore office. Levy's hire fills the hole left by Harvey Twomey, who left Merrill Lynch to join Deutsche Bank as head of global prime finance sales in Asia. Another source reports that in Sep 2008, Deutsche Bank has moved Chris Pagan (LinkedIn) from Hong Kong to Singapore in order to head prime brokerage for Southeast Asia.

VimpelCom Maintaining Strength – Analyst Blog

Vimpel-Communications (VIP) delivered better-than-expected operating results in the most recent quarter, beating our estimates with strong revenue and customer growth across all its markets.

We continue to be intrigued by VimpelComÂ’s success in increasing sales and retaining new subscribers on a recurring basis and maintaining strong operating margin. We believe synergies from the Golden Telecom acquisition will continue to drive revenue and earnings momentum. Additionally, untapped opportunities in Eastern European markets, coupled with fresh expansion initiatives in Southeast Asia, support our forecast for strengthening financials.

We reiterate our Buy rating based on financial metric estimates which we believe are attainable. VimpelCom is trading at 10.2x our 2008 EPADS estimates which is significantly below historical levels in previous quarters, although this metric remains at a premium to its major competitor, Mobile TeleSystems (MBT) (its closest Russian peer). VimpelComÂ’s shares have lost approximately 50% of its value since a 52-week high reached in December 2007.

The stock price recently registered a 52-week low of $19.08, and is currently trading marginally above this level, offering a more favorable entry-point. Our revised six-month price target of $25 is based on 12x our 2008 EPADS estimate.
