The following is a list of the S&P 500 firms where the analysts have been cutting their expectations for the current fiscal year the most over the last month. Most likely these firms reported disappointing earnings or gave negative guidance on their conference calls.

Historically, you have not wanted to be invested in companies where the analysts who follow them most closely see the earnings prospects diminishing. Also, estimates in motion tend to remain in motion. The first bit of bad news is rarely the last (the cockroach theory). This means that the current expectations, even though down from last month, are probably still to high for these firms.

To weed out anomalies, only those firms that are currently expected to earn more than $0.50 in 2009 are included and only those firms where there are a minimum of three estimates in the system.

Kansas City Southern (KSU) dodged a bullet and announced that it did not sustain any major damage to infrastructure after hurricane Ike. The company will be able to repair the minimal damages to rails and facilities as soon as flood waters retreat.

Kansas City Southern is confident that it and its customers in the gulf region will be able to resume business as usual soon. In addition, analysts predict that most of the lost revenue for the third quarter will be re-captured later in the year.

The consensus estimates for the current year are up 12.5% within the past two months. The company has also seen estimates for the current quarter, next quarter, and next year increase as well.

Accenture is a powerhouse consulting firm with 180,000 people spread out in over 49 countries around the world. The company provides consulting services to 94 of the Fortune Global 100.

While other companies have faltered in 2008, Accenture recently posted record third-quarter revenues and earnings per share. Revenues rose 20% to $6.10 billion. Earnings per share were a quarterly record of 74 cents per share, beating analysts' estimates by 7.25%. ACN also saw record consulting bookings of $3.98 billion in the quarter.

The company has surprised on earnings 4 consecutive quarters by an average of 7.71%. ACN reports fourth-quarter earnings on Sep 25.
