NTT Headed for India – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 19th, 2009) Writes:
The severe economic recession and maturity of the Japanese telecom market have compelled Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. (NTT) to look at other geographies. Industry sources say the company has started negotiations with Patni Computer Systems, the sixth largest software services exporter of India , to acquire 66% stake in the latter. Entry into India will unlock the $60 billion IT and ITES (IT enabled services) market to Nippon. In the last reported quarter, Patni generated approximately $166.75 million in revenue and around $33.7 million of net profit.  Nippon, the largest telecom operator in Japan is facing strong competition in the Japanese wireless market and from the potential impact of low-cost, fixed-line services, such as “voice-over-Internet protocol" (VoIP). In order to maintain its leadership position, the company has taken various measures in the domestic telecom market and also decided to capture selected international opportunities to drive long-term ...

Cop Takes Corruption Campaign To Moscow

Robert Amsterdam (November 11th, 2009) Writes:
C74C37B0-82D4-4E9C-A739-B2593DA61AA8_w393_s.jpgRFE/RL follows the movements of former police major and new You Tube star Aleksei Dymovsky, whose campaign against corruption in the police forces has caused a storm of controversy.  According to an article by Brian Whitmore, Dymovsky avowed at a press conference in Moscow that he has 150 hours of incriminating material on tape, which it seems he wishes to submit directly to video addressee Vladimir Putin.  The article also raises some question marks about whether the apparently media-savvy major, who has called his whistle-blowing 'suicidal', has a political puppet master behind him.  Indeed Whitmore highlights how the ex-major's criticisms could be fueling an internal political battle: Dymovsky's allegations come at a time of intense ...

Maksharip Aushev Killed

Robert Amsterdam (October 26th, 2009) Writes:
mensenrecht_0.jpgToday's headlines speak of the bleak but sadly not unfamiliar news of another human rights activist being murdered in the North Caucasus.  On Sunday, businessman and rights defender Maksharip Aushev was killed when 60 rounds of bullets were sprayed into his car along a highway in the province of Kabardino-Balkaria.  Aushev is the third human rights activist to be murdered in the trouble spot in a little over three months, following the murder of Memorial's stalwart Natalya Estemirova in July and childrens' charity officer Zarema Sadulayeva and her husband in August. The Guardian adumbrates Aushev's trajectory into the sphere of human rights advocacy, prompted by the experience of his own son and nephew being kidnapped, followed by ...

Kadyrov’s Unlikely Victims

Robert Amsterdam (August 11th, 2009) Writes:
Philip P. Pan of the Washington Post has some better information on the married couple who were murdered in Chechnya yesterday.  Ramzan Kadryov's quote is breathtaking:  in explaining that he would have no reason to have one woman killed, he gives a reason why he would want Natalia Estemirova killed.  C'mon now, let's just try a little harder here.

She said Sadulayeva avoided political activism and never challenged the government. But Save the Generation's former director was found slain in 2005 after witnesses saw the security services take him away. A gunfight had taken place in an apartment he owned, but prosecutors cleared him of any ties to the rebels, Sokiryanskaya said.

Afterwards, a propaganda film broadcast on state television attacked Save the Generation as one of several groups receiving funding from international aid organizations determined to support the rebels, Lokshina said.

Sadulayeva's husband had served time in

Raiding Sibir

Robert Amsterdam (July 8th, 2009) Writes:
Today the Associated Press is reporting that the Russian security services have raided the offices of the legally troubled company Sibir Energy.  Earlier this spring we saw Gazprom begin to pull some moves on Sibir that were very similar to its maneuvering around TNK-BP, Royal Dutch Shell, and even Yukos, involving arrest warrants, corporate raids, visa troubles for executives, environmental hang ups, etc. It's almost coming to the point at which we could measure progress in the fight against legal nihilism by counting whether these kinds of office raids are increasing or decreasing.  Unfortunately, things seem to be on the uptick.

Smart Money Betting on Heavy Machinery Stocks Gaining in 2009

Joe Kunkle, The Investment U Research Team

One of the greatest assets you can have as a trader or investor is having the ability to spot trends, and use that information to draw conclusions about what will occur in the future.

I have long used the options market as a way of watching where the “smart money” is making bets. It has allowed me to foresee the collapse of financial stocks and the re-emergence of oil and commodity related stocks.

And from the signals I’m seeing, we may be on the verge of another big move.

Over the past few weeks, large volume bullish option trades have been indicating the expectation for a major recovery in heavy machinery stocks for the third quarter of 2009.

But we can’t really understand the significance of these
