Yesterday, Harris Corp. (HRS) was awarded a $228 million contract by the U.S. Marine Corps to provide Falcon II AN/VRC-104 high-frequency radio systems to be used in MRAP-All Terrain Vehicles. The AN/VRC-104 radio system will provide reliable, secure, high-frequency tactical satellite communications for this new army vehicle. The U.S. Army will use this vehicle mainly in the battlefield of Afghanistan because of its mountainous terrain. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Defense raised the ceiling on a Navy contract with Harris Corp.'s RF Communications Division by $311.4 million to $897.9 million for the period up to February 2010. The contract is for tactical radios as well as support systems.

Harris has a strong market position in the government communications sector, with a broad product line and an enviable win rate on government contracts (more than 60% historically). For fiscal 2010, Harris estimated revenues from the tactical radio business to be in the range of $1.4 billion to $1.5 billion. Several industry researches have predicted that tactical radio segment may provide a multi-billion dollar business opportunity to Harris in the next couple of years as overall defense spending is likely to remain firm since upgrading the military’s communications infrastructure remains a priority.

According to our assessment, Harris will benefit in the near term from higher defense expenditure by the U.S. government coupled with new expansion drives in the Asian, European and African markets. The company has established a solid international dealer network to pursue multiyear contracts throughout these regions. Harris has estimated that international markets represent a pipeline opportunity of around $4 billion. The company has won large-scale multiyear standardization contracts in Mexico, Australia, Algeria, the U.K., Pakistan, Sweden and Iraq.

Read the full analyst report on "HRS"
Zacks Investment Research

Iridium Communications Inc. (IRDM) and ITT Corp. (ITT) announced that ITT has won a contract from the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center -Dahlgren Division to supply 1,450 Iridium-based handheld tactical satellite communication devices for use by U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Under the fixed-price contract, valued at $9.7 million, ITT will manufacture and deliver the Distributed Tactical Communications Systems (DTCS) - Radio Only transceivers by March 2010. These push-to-talk radios use the Iridium satellite network to provide over-the-horizon, beyond-line-of-sight tactical networks connectivity for war-fighters on the move. The DTCS-RO handsets are lightweight, easy to use, require no deployed infrastructure, and represent a real breakthrough in handheld mobile satellite communications.

Iridium is making in-orbit upgrades to the satellites and ground infrastructure to expand the footprint of DTCS nets from 100 to 250 miles, and to permit more than 2,000 nets to be activated simultaneously on the satellite network.

Earlier, the company had announced that it was awarded a contract to provide turnkey potable and process water treatment systems to a Mexican platform designed by Dragados Offshore Mexico. The contract, valued at $2.6 million, will see ITT supply pumps and extensive treatment systems for an offshore oil platform in the Bay of Campeche.

Iridium Corporation is the only mobile satellite service (MSS) company offering coverage over the entire globe. The Iridium constellation of low-earth orbiting (LEO) cross-linked satellites provides critical voice and data services for areas not served by terrestrial communication networks.

ITT Corporation manufactures engineered products and related services worldwide. The company’s Defense Electronics and Services segment provides systems integration, communications, engineering, and technical support solutions; and research, technologies, and engineering support services to the government, industrial, and commercial customers. It also offers wireless networking systems for tactical communications; night vision equipment; electronic warfare technologies for military aircraft; and military and civilian air traffic control systems. Major competitors are Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) and Raytheon Co. (RTN).

Currently, we have a Neutral recommendation on ITT.
Read the full analyst report on "IRDM"
Read the full analyst report on "ITT"
Read the full analyst report on "LMT"
Read the full analyst report on "RTN"
Zacks Investment Research

L-3 Communications Reports Improved Q1'09 Results

L-3 Communications (LLL) announced results for its 1st quarter of 2009. LLL reported stable 1st quarter 2009 results with sales up 3.7% year-over-year, net income up 5.3% and fully-diluted EPS up 9.9%.

The U.S. Department of Defense accounted for 74% of the company's total revenue in 2008.

Net income for the reported quarter increased 4.8% to $197 million or $1.66 per basic and diluted share, compared to $188 million or $1.51 per diluted share ($1.53 basic) recorded in the prior-year quarter. Net sales increased 3.7% to $3.6 billion compared to $3.5 billion in the year-ago quarter. The growth came through primarily from the C3ISR segment, and in the Specialized Products segment.

These increases were partially offset by a decrease in the Government Services and AM&M segments driven primarily by lower linguist services and lower volume for the U.S. Air Force Contract Field Teams (CFT) contract. The increase in net sales from acquired businesses net of divestitures was $77 million, or 2%. In the reported quarter, operating income increased by 2% compared to the year-ago quarter.

The ongoing trend of strategic earnings accretive acquisitions continues, although notably for smaller ticket transactions.

Outlook: L-3 Communications announced that for fiscal 2009 it expects net sales in the range of $15.5 billion to $15.7 billion compared to previous range of $15.5 to $15.7 billion, earnings per share in the range of $7.17 to $7.32 compared to previous range of $7.12 to $7.32.

The company's LLL's free cash flow is expected to be at least $1.2 billion for the full-year 2009.

Funded backlog was $11.7 billion at March 27, 2009, with a book-to-bill ratio of 1.04 times for the 1st quarter of 2009.

We continue to view LLL as one of the best-positioned pure defense plays by virtue of its non-platform focus, broad diversification of programs, and exposure to both the investment account and expanding order booking in the Specialized Products category. Furthermore, L-3 is well positioned to become a significant market leader in providing technology for rail security, which could prove to be a bigger global market than airport security, given the attacks in Europe.

The company is also growing through frequent earnings accretive acquisitions. Our bullish outlook for the company and its shareholders is supported by LLL's record order backlog, strong performance mainly in the C3ISR and Specialized Products segments, disposal of non-core businesses, the GLS subcontract, and strong operating results and robust cash flow; partially offset by divestitures, higher pension funding and declining Linguist and CFT revenues.

We also expect that L-3's ongoing share repurchase program will be accretive to earnings over the near-term.

Going forward, we expect these positive trends to continue throughout 2009 due to an impressive product portfolio, earnings growth through organic means and accretive acquisitions, as well as strong cash flow generation.

Over the past twelve months, LLL traded within a wide range of 7.7x to 15.3x then current-year 2009 earnings estimates. The range widened mainly since September 2008 when LLL tumbled, overcome by the strong bearish sentiments prevailing in the overall market.

The stock currently trades at 10.4x our 2009 EPS estimate and 9.0x our 2010 EPS estimate, or in the lower-end of the range of its industry peers. Meanwhile, relative price to sales and cash flow multiples indicate that LLL trades at the lower-end of the range of its defense industry peers. Accordingly, with a bullish outlook, strong earnings growth expectations, an ongoing share repurchase program, and a predominant discount valuation, we reiterate our BUY recommendation on LLL, with a six-month target price of $87.50, or 11.8x our current-year 2009 EPS estimate and 10.1x our forward-year 2010 estimate.

Price appreciation to our near-term valuation target -- combined with the recently increased $0.35 per share quarterly cash dividend, which we consider easily sustainable and secure based upon low projected payouts -- represents an annualized total return potential of 28.9%.

Headquartered in New York City, L-3 Communications is a leading supplier of a broad range of products and services used in a number of aerospace and defense platforms. The company supplies subsystems on many platforms that are used for secure communication networks; mobile satellite communications; information security systems; shipboard communications; naval power systems; fuses and safety & arming devices for missiles and munitions; microwave assemblies for radars and missiles; telemetry and instrumentation; and airport security systems. In addition, the company is a prime system contractor for aircraft modernization and maintenance; Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance (ISR) collection platforms; simulation and training; and government systems support services.

Read the full analyst report on "LLL"
Zacks Investment Research

One of Zacks.comÂ’s several trading services, the Breakout Trader, recently received a boost in the form of a 19% return on a stock that was in the portfolio for a holding period that was a couple days short of just one month. The stock was American Science & Engineering ( ASEI), and its share price is still rising.

Impressed by American Science & EngineeringÂ’s results, I set out to find similar plays, making sure the fundamentals were strong. After browsing several companies, it became evident that my screening strategy should be narrowed down to companies that, like ASEI, provide big ticket items serving industrial markets.

With the use of Research Wizard, I found AZZ incorporated (AZZ) and Teledyne Technologies, Inc. (TDY). I also discovered that all three companies are makers of industrial electronic equipment or components, bringing to mind the only memorable part of the lyrics to the Electric Slide song...”it’s electric.”

These companies, however, are more than just “electric.” A closer look at the fundamentals and technical momentum behind these three stocks reveals that they are also electrifying.

American Science & Engineering, the impetus for this investment idea, boasts a history of contributing innovative technology to the fields of astrophysics, defense, education, medicine and security since 1958. Today, the company provides X-ray inspection systems and continues to innovate, create and develop new products by investing in new ideas through research and development.

American Science & EngineeringÂ’s X-ray inspection systems are used by governments and corporations around the world to combat terrorism, drug and weapons smuggling, illegal immigration, and trade fraud.

Technically, the Zacks #1 Rank (“strong buy”) company looks great. During the past 3 months, it’s share price spiked by 29% as the broader market fell.

The fundamental picture is a little mixed. Earnings misses over the past 4 consecutive quarters look indicate that there is certainly room for improvement. However, rising Wall Street estimates for ASEIÂ’s fiscal second quarter, third quarter and full year signal prosperity ahead. AnalystsÂ’ earnings expectations for the year ending March 2009 were up 1.3% over the past 30 trading days.

For the next 3 – 5 years, the company’s earnings per share are projected to grow by 17.5%.

If the companyÂ’s share price advanced on results that came in below the consensus estimate, should ASEI meet or surpass future forecasts, shares could sky rocket.

AZZ incorporated is a specialty electrical equipment manufacturer serving the global markets of power generation, transmission and distribution and industrial, as well as a leading provider of hot dip galvanizing services to the steel fabrication market nationwide.

Of the three stocks, AZZ has seen the biggest return over the past 3 months as shares jumped 44%.

This company is also a Zacks #1 Rank (“strong buy”). On the fundamental front, the company has done well. It topped Wall Street estimates 3 times out of the past 4 straight quarters, matching the other time. On average, AZZ was ahead of analyst forecasts by 27% during the 4 quarters.

Projections are also on the rise for this pick. For the full year, Wall Street is calling for earnings of $3.00 per share, versus the $2.37 two months ago.

The company’s earnings per share are expected to grow by 12% over the next 3 – 5 years.

Teledyne Technologies provides sophisticated electronic components, instruments & communications products, including defense electronics, data acquisition & communications equipment for airlines and business aircraft, monitoring and control instruments for industrial and environmental applications and components, and subsystems for wireless and satellite communications.

This company, a Zacks #2 Rank (“buy”) has seen a share price rise of 13.5% over the past 3 months.

TDY eclipsed the consensus estimate by an average of 12% over the past 4 consecutive quarters. As the case with the aforementioned, Wall Street sees higher earnings ahead. Analysts hiked full-year expectations by 6% from last monthÂ’s level.

Earnings per share are expected to grow by 14% over the next 3 – 5 years for TDY.
