Delay in Oracle-Sun Merger Hurts – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 22nd, 2009) Writes:
At an event in San Jose, Mr. Larry Ellison, the Chief Executive and Chairman of Oracle Corp. (ORCL), the largest software company said that its proposed acquisition of Sun Microsystems, Inc. (JAVA) for $7.4 billion ($9.50 a share) has been slowed by an ongoing antitrust review in Europe and the company is still waiting for clearance by the European Commission. The delay in approval from the regulatory body is causing Sun Micro to lose about $100 million each month. The major issue lingers on Oracle's potential acquisition of Sun's MySQL – an open-source database software which overlaps Oracle’s own database software. This could smother competition in the database software industry. However, Mr. Ellison said the deal is expected to be cleared by European regulators, despite the delay. It still remains unclear how long the European approval would take. While it is being speculated that Oracle ...

Grupo Aeroportuario Sees Fewer Passengers – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 15th, 2009) Writes:
Early last week, Mexican airport operator, Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte, S.A.B. de C.V. (OMAB), reported terminal passenger traffic at its 13 airports during August 2009.  Total passenger traffic decreased 12.9% year over year in the month. Domestic traffic decreased 11.0%, and international traffic decreased 24.1%. However, total passenger traffic volumes decreased at a slower rate than during any prior month of the year. This effect is principally the result of the improvement in domestic traffic.  The performance of airlines such as VivaAerobus, Grupo Aeromexico, Aeromar, and Grupo Mexicana benefited domestic traffic. Three domestic routes were opened: Mexicana Link opened the Acapulco-Guadalajara and Guadalajara-Mazatlan-San Jose del Cabo routes on August 1, and Aeromexico Connect opened the Zacatecas-Mexico City route on August 11.  The Culiacan, Durango, and Mazatlan airports reported traffic growth of 15.7%, 23.2%, and 2.6% respectively. However, the overall volume of domestic traffic was ...

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 31st, 2009) Writes:

Earlier this month, Atmel Corp. (ATML) reported revenues of $284.5 million in its second quarter, up 5% sequentially but down 32% year over year.

Revenues reported in the quarter were negatively impacted by reduced demand resulting from the global economic weakness experienced in all electronic markets since the fourth quarter. In addition, reduced inventory levels held by distributors also resulted in low shipments levels compared to prior periods.

Gross margin declined to 32.3% from 35.1% in the previous quarter and 36.5% in the year-ago quarter, mainly due to a planned reduction in factory utilization in two of the company’s wafer fabrication facilities.
