Ryder System Inc. (R) has pulled back on its fiscal first-quarter earnings guidance in anticipation of lower results in its Fleet Management Solutions (FMS) business.

The stock has plunged over 16% since today, accompanied by higher-than-usual volume of approximately 3.6 million, compared to average volume of about 1.5 million.

The transportation company now expects first-quarter earnings per share between 22 cents and 24 cents, compared to the previous estimate of 40 cents to 50 cents. The consensus estimate for the quarter is 47 cents per share

R said that "the overall economic environment deteriorated throughout the first quarter beyond the company's original expectations resulting in lower overall freight volumes."
