Alexion Beats, Raises Outlook – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 23rd, 2009) Writes:
Yesterday, Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN) came out with strong third quarter financials. The company reported earnings per share of 29 cents, well above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 21 cents and 23 cents reported in the year-ago quarter. Revenues increased 34% to $102.6 million from $76.5 million in the corresponding period last year, driven by strong Soliris (eculizumab) sales. However, revenues increased 44% after excluding $5.3 million of Soliris sales from the third quarter of 2008 as they were associated with the previous quarter’s shipments. Soliris posted robust sales primarily due to the addition of a significant numbers of new patients in both the US and European countries. Soliris is Alexion’s only US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved (approval received in March 2007) product used for the treatment of Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH), a life threatening blood disorder. The drug had received European Commission (EC) approval ...

Cars, Wishes and the Apocalypse

Contrarian Profits (September 9th, 2009) Writes:

In my larval, pre-blogging days, I always faced the back-to-school moment with abject dread.  It meant returning to a program of the most severe, mind-numbing regimentation in the ghastly New York City public schools after a summer of idyllic unreality in the New Hampshire woods, where I went to a Lord of the Flies type of summer camp.  And so here I am, many decades later, still uneasy as the final page of the August calendar flies away in a hot Santa Ana wind, and a great hellfire closes in on the far eastern reaches of Los Angeles, and the American money system falls into a peculiar limbo, and every fifth person is out of work, or going bankrupt, or glugging down the seawater of default, or being denied coverage by health insurance that he-or-she has already shelled out ten grand for this year, or getting shot in

The Oil Sands in Alberta, Canada

Byron King (August 20th, 2009) Writes:

A couple of weeks ago I was in Fort McMurray, Alberta.  I was visiting two large oil sands operations, courtesy of Conoco Phillips (NYSE:COP), Syncrude Canada and the American Petroleum Institute, which sponsored the trip.  I’ve been all over the place, but never to a working oil sands operation.  This was a first for me, and quite an eye-opener.

What Are These Oil Sands?

Back in Pleistocene time, the glaciers covered much of northern Alberta.  In places, there was a mile of ice.  During some of the warmer periods, there was a lot of melting.  On occasion, and in some places, there were giant, glacial-dammed lakes.

Every now and again, these glacial dams would break, sending massive volumes of water downstream, wiping away pretty much everything along the way.  Well, it turns out that in this scoured-out area that included much of the rock covering some lower Cretaceous deposits of

Hess Corp. (NYSE:HES): Upgraded to Overweight with a $75 target – Barclays

Notable Calls (July 7th, 2009) Writes:
div style="text-align: justify;"Barclays is out with an interesting call on span style="font-weight: bold;"Hess Corp. (NYSE:HES)/span upgrading the shares to Overweight from Equal weight and maintaining their $75 price target.br /br /According to the analyst the upgrade comes following recent sharp underperformance. As one of the most oil-levered producers within their research universe, they believe Hess is well positioned to benefit from a rising oil price environment while offering a significant exploration potential upside with no sizable upfront premium.br /br /Firm notes that although they have long been intrigued by the company’s vast long-term resource potential in Brazil, Ghana, Libya, and Australia, they were uncomfortable about the shares’ valuation. They believed the market had prematurely awarded too much premium for its exploration potential and ignored the unavoidable underlying risks associated with such a concentrated high-interest/high-impact drilling program span style="font-weight: bold;"(dry hole is the norm, not the exception, in the Eamp;P business. ...

State Budgets Are Anti-Stimulus – Analyst Blog

Dirk Van Dijk (June 30th, 2009) Writes:

Today is the end of the 2009 fiscal year, and many states are still scrambling to get budgets in place for the 2010 fiscal year. It is not easy since when the economy turns south, so do tax revenues, and states are not allowed to run deficits or borrow for operating needs. Some states have managed to cut costs or raise taxes enough to close their deficits for the upcoming year. The only two states without a budget problem are Montana and North Dakota. As shown in the table below (from http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=711), the total spending cuts or revenue increase needs to be $166 billion or 24% of the projected budget. To some extent states have used "rainy day funds" and the money from the Federal Stimulus bill to close some of the gap. Still the problem is very severe with 5 states (CA, AZ,
