GWS Technologies (GWSC.OB) and Renewables Industry to Benefit from Stimulus Spending on ‘Smart Grid’

QualityStocks (October 28th, 2009) Writes:

GWS Technologies is an alternative energy company that has been gaining much acclaim of late. Founded in 2005 in Scottsdale, Arizona, GWS became a fully-reporting company by March of 2007 and has had continued success since that time period. A recent announcement directed at stimulus spending will enhance GWS for years to come.

Yesterday, the White House stated that $3.4 billion will be allocated to modernize the nation’s electrical power system to more easily use renewable resources. The allocations of these funds came from the Obama administration’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and were put into effect to fund smart grid projects across the country.

The availability of these funds will attract the attention of institutional investors because the money will be released in a form of a grant, being matched dollar for dollar by private funding. This new stream of capital will attract investors and

Stimulus Spending on ‘Smart Grid’ Will Benefit Renewables, says GWS Technologies

Stuart Smith (October 28th, 2009) Writes:

Oct. 28, 2009 (Business Wire) — GWS Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: GWSC), an alternative energy company developing and marketing solar and wind-powered renewable energy products and solutions, sees substantial benefits for wind and solar energy projects in yesterday’s White House announcement that $3.4 billion will be allocated to modernize the nation’s electrical power system to more easily use renewable resources. The money will be released in the form of grants to applicants and must be matched dollar for dollar by private funding. The grants are a result of an allocation of funds to smart grid projects in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

“One of the biggest obstacles to developing more wind and solar power on a utility-size scale has been the lack of transmission lines tied to an electrical grid that’s capable of delivering clean electricity from the best solar and wind sites to the point of

Duke Energy Going Green – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 15th, 2009) Writes:
Duke Energy Corporation (DUK) will install four solar panels in North Carolina in the first phase of its $50 million rooftop solar project. The four projects with a combined 4.6MW of annual capacity are expected to be completed by March 2010.   Duke Energy is focusing on green energy in the light of recent progress in the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The act stipulates stringent caps against carbon dioxide emissions. Also North Carolina 's renewable energy standard stipulates each public electric utility to generate a minimum of 12.5% of its North Carolina retail customers' electricity needs through new renewable energy sources or energy efficiency measures by fiscal 2021.  Duke Energy also has 634MW of land-based wind energy in Pennsylvania , Texas and Wyoming , another 99MW under construction and an additional 251MW of wind projects scheduled to begin operations in 2010. According to a report ...

Hawaii’s Renewable Energy Revolution

Contrarian Profits (September 16th, 2009) Writes:

Hawaii: Pristine black sand beaches… surfing… spectacular volcanic eruptions… and miles of pineapple plantations. If you are like me, this is what comes to mind when you imagine Hawaii.

What may not come to mind, though, when you think of America’s 50th state are its energy resources – and specifically, the fact that it gets 77% of its power from oil-fired power plants. That’s a unique statistic within the United States. Coal-fired plants provide 14% of power, and the remaining 9% comes from renewable sources like wind and solar energy.

Suffice it to say, tourism is Hawaii’s largest industry, with agriculture playing a major role, too. And not unlike the rest of the country, the one thing needed to keep it all running smoothly is a reliable source of electricity.

Problem is, Hawaii is dependent on fossil fuels for more than 90% of its power – an issue that became shockingly clear when

Solar Energy’s Future Shines Brightest in China

Contrarian Profits (September 14th, 2009) Writes:

With the announcement that it intends to build the world’s largest solar power plant, China is rapidly evolving into the world’s largest market for solar energy. And with heavy government backing, Chinese solar companies are quickly becoming global leaders.

Fast-growing industry and a reliance on coal-fired power plants turned China into the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gas a few years ago. Clouds of smog far thicker than that of Los Angeles hang over many of its cities and much of the water is densely polluted. But that’s something the central government aims to change.

China plans to reduce energy consumption per unit of its gross domestic product (GDP) by 20% of 2005 levels by the end of next year. It’s more immediate goal is to reduce reliance on coal-fired plants to 60% of its energy production from 70%, and replace with renewable energy sources like wind and solar.

Since 2007, about 54

Trade Deficit Slips on Oil – Analyst Blog

Dirk Van Dijk (September 10th, 2009) Writes:
The trade deficit in July came in at $32.0 billion -- a significant increase from the $27.5 billion in June. The consensus expectation was that it would be close to unchanged. Since the trade deficit is a direct input into GDP (net exports), this will moderately reduce the expected growth rate for the third quarter. There was, however, some good news in the report: both imports and exports rose, imports just rose faster. Trade now seems to be in a sustainable uptrend, after falling off a cliff in the second half of last year and then stabilizing in the spring. This can be seen in the first graph below (from http://www.calculatedriskblog.com/). A year ago, the trade deficit peaked at $64.9 billion on much higher levels of both imports and exports. The world-wide slowdown has dropped our exports by 22.4% from $164.4 billion to $127.6 billion this year, ...

CMS Tops Michigan Green Race – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 31st, 2009) Writes:

Consumers Energy, the major subsidiary of CMS Energy (CMS), requested approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission for six new renewable energy projects to be owned and operated by third parties. Consumers Energy’s move is in line with the recent rush of utilities to join the green wagon. The rush has been precipitated by the American Clean Energy and Security Act. The act stipulates stringent caps against carbon dioxide emissions.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act mandates that by fiscal 2015, all utilities will have to source 10% of their power supply from service state based renewable energy sources.

Consumers Energy through the six new projects added a total of 65,000MWh of renewable energy annually for a period of 20 years. As of now almost 4% of Consumers Energy’s sources are Michigan-based renewable sources, including wind, biomass, hydro, landfill gas and anaerobic digestion. This makes Consumers Energy the largest renewable

Capstone Turbine Corp. (CPST) Lands Big South American Order

QualityStocks (August 24th, 2009) Writes:

Capstone Turbine Corp., the world’s leading producer of microturbines for localized generation of electricity, today announced an order for three of their large C800 microturbines, capable of generating 800 Kw of electrical power, for use with a major wastewater treatment facility in Brazil. The total order is valued at over $2 million and represents the company’s first sale of the C800 in South America.

The order comes from Fluxo Servicios de Petroleo, Capstone’s distributor in Brazil. It is for a wastewater treatment plant serving millions of residents in two cities. The plant treats 4,500 liters of sewage per second, and will use the microturbines in a combined heat and power application. The microturbines will run on methane generated during the treatment process. In addition to producing 2.4 megawatts of electricity to power the plant’s equipment, any excess heat will help maintain the proper temperature in the plant’s onsite waste digester.
