Cliffs Natural Resources (CLF), the largest producer of iron ore pellets in the U.S., recorded third-quarter 2009 profits of 45 cents, significantly lower than last year’s earnings of $1.61 per share, on weak iron volumes and prices. However, reported earnings were in contrast to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 6 cents. Consistent with weaker year-over-year global demand for iron ore -- the steelmaking raw material -- revenues in the quarter tumbled 44% to $666.4 million.

Performance by Segments

North American Iron Ore: Sales in the segment slipped 47% to $428.2 million on a 31% decline in volumes to 5.5 million tons. Iron ore production halved to 4.6 million tons in the quarter. Demand for iron ore pellets remained weak year over year despite steel demand picking up in the last quarter. Capacity utilization in the North American steel industry ramped from 49% in the beginning of the quarter to 59% at the end. However, the current utilization of 60% remains well below the 2008 levels.

North American Coal: Revenues in the segment plunged 63% to $37.9 million on a 62% drop in volumes to 343,000 tons. Lower sales volume was driven by weak market conditions impacting demand for steel in both US and Europe. Coal production was down 63% to 294 million tons.

Asia-Pacific Iron Ore: Sales dipped 29% to $165.3 million despite a 23% increase in volumes. Average prices for iron ore shipments declined 42% to $62.71 per ton from $108.23 per ton in the year-ago period. Cliffs is currently selling to customers in China under provisional pricing arrangements that are consistent with the 2009 iron ore settlements for iron ore lumps and fines reached between producers and other Asia-based consumers outside of China.

Third-quarter 2009 production of 2.1 million tons in Asia-Pacific Iron Ore was a 53% increase year over year, driven by higher production at Koolyanobbing mine in Australia. We expect production to improve further with production start-up at the Cockatoo Island Joint Venture in 2010 upon completion of a seawall project at the mine.

At the end of the quarter, Cliffs had $359.9 million of cash and cash equivalents, compared with $179.0 million at Dec. 31, 2008. With a debt of $525 million, the company has maintained its debt to capitalization ratio at a comfortable 20%. This should help Cliffs to raise funds for acquisition, if required.

Outlook

Cliffs expects to sell about 17.4 million tons of iron ore in 2009, foreseeing a sequential increase in demand. Recently, certain steelmakers in Europe agreed to a price settlement decrease of about 48% for iron ore pellets. As a result, the company expects average revenue per ton in the North American Iron Ore business segment to be about $75 to $80 in 2009. Currently, the North American Iron Ore business segment is expected to produce 15 million tons in 2009 at a cost of $65 to $70 per ton.

Cliffs has narrowed its sales guidance to 1.8 million tons of coal from 2 million tons at average revenues of $95 to $100 per ton. A reduction in expected production is decreasing leverage over fixed costs, which is expected to result in average cost of sales of $135 to $140 per ton, down from the initial expectation of $150 to $160 per ton in 2009.

Asia-Pacific Iron Ore 2009 sales volume is expected to be 8.5 million tons, an increase from previous expectations of 8.0 million tons. Anticipated production of 8.1 million ton is slightly above the previous expectation of 8.0 million tons. Cliffs expects Asia-Pacific Iron Ore to achieve 2009 revenue per ton of $60 to $65, with costs per ton of $50 to $55 per ton.

Cliffs has a 45% economic interest in Sonoma Coal and expects total production of 2.9 million tons for 2009. Sonoma is expected to have a sales volume of 3.1 million tons. Declining demand for high cost metallurgical grade coal has forced Cliffs to cut production. The company expects sales mix between thermal and metallurgical grade coal to be about 70% and 30%, respectively, compared with the previous guidance of 60% and 40%. As a result, in 2009 revenue per ton is expected to be $100 to $105, with per-ton cost at Sonoma from $85 to $90, higher than the previous estimate of $75 to $85.

We are optimistic about Cliffs’ focus on growing its international exposure after facing a consistent decline in North American production. The recent Wabush mine acquisition -- which owns and operates iron ore mining and pellet facilities in Newfoundland, Labrador and Quebec in Canada -- is consistent with this approach, as the production will be sold primarily in Europe. We reiterate our Neutral recommendation on the stock.
Read the full analyst report on "CLF"
Zacks Investment Research

For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL – October 13, 2009 – Zacks Equity Research highlights Amphenol Corporation (APH) as the Bull of the Day and Palm (PALM) the Bear of the Day. In addition, Zacks Equity Research provides analysis on United States Steel Corporation (X), Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. (CLF) and ArcelorMittal (MT).

Full analysis of all these stocks is available at http://at.zacks.com/?id=2676

Here is a synopsis of all five stocks:

Bull of the Day:

Amphenol Corporation (APH) is scheduled to release its fiscal Q3 results on October 15. The company stated that though the economic environment remains uncertain, there was a stabilization of demand in most markets.

We remain optimistic about Amphenol's long-term growth prospects in the mobile devices business. Demand for mobile phones remains strong. Beyond mobile phones, the company continues to expand the use of its products into fast growing submarkets such as PDAs, laptops and desktop computers.

Based on constant currency exchange rates and some seasonal moderation, APH expects revenues between $670 million and $685 million in Q3:09. EPS is projected within 41 - 43 cents. We maintain our Outperform rating with a target price of $40.

Bear of the Day:

Although demand for Palm’s (PALM) Pre smartphone is growing, it is still selling a small fraction of Pre phones to smart-phones users and, in our opinion, most of them are already existing Palm customers.

We still expect the stock to underperform the market as RIMM and AAPL continue to expand market share, and phones based on the Android operating system enter the market.

We believe the maturing lifecycle of Centro, the slow ramp of its Windows Mobile-based product sales, and the time taken to add carriers to distribute its Treo products in the U.S. and global markets will continue to exert pressure on revenue and earnings.

US Steel Divests Interest

On Oct. 9, United States Steel Corporation’s (X) wholly owned subsidiary U.S. Steel Canada Inc., ArcelorMittal Dofasco and Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. (CLF) have agreed to sell their respective interest in the Wabush Mines joint venture to a Montreal-based steel mining company, Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines Ltd., for $120 million.

Wabush Mines owns and operates iron ore mining and pellet facilities in Newfoundland in the U.S. and Labrador and Quebec in Canada. Wabush's total rated annual production capacity is 6.4 million tons of iron ore pellets.

U.S. Steel holds 44.6%, ArcelorMittal Dofasco holds 28.6% and Cliffs Natural Resources holds 26.8% in the joint venture. Completion of the transaction is subject to a right of first refusal held by the third owner - Cliffs. ArcelorMittal (MT), the world's largest steelmaker, will receive $34.28 million for its interest. Consolidated Thompson plans to finance the transaction with existing cash and credit facilities. Other terms of the transaction were not released.

Pittsburgh, PA-based United States Steel Corporation is a leading steel manufacturer in the U.S. and the fifth largest worldwide. It produces and sells steel mill products including flat-rolled and tubular products in North America and Europe. U.S. Steel has a global annual raw steel production capacity of 31.7 million net tons (24.3 million tons in North America and 7.4 million tons in Europe).

U.S. Steel is in the midst of achieving $200 million in cost synergies from the acquisitions of Canadian flat roll producer Stelco (renamed as U.S. Steel Canada/USSC) and domestic tubular manufacturer Lone Star Technologies (currently a part of U.S. Steel Tubular Products), mostly from overhead reduction and improved raw materials sourcing. We maintain our Neutral recommendation on the stock.
Read the full analyst report on "X"
Read the full analyst report on "CLF"
Read the full analyst report on "MT"
Zacks Investment Research

Calgary-based Enbridge Inc. (ENB) recently announced that it reached an agreement with subsidiaries of U.S. oil major Chevron Corp. (CVX), Norway’s StatoilHydro ASA (STO) and Japan’s Marubeni Corp. to construct and operate a 40-mile, 20-inch oil pipeline from the proposed Big Foot ultra deepwater development in the Gulf of Mexico.

The planned conduit is estimated to cost approximately $250 million and will transport about 100,000 barrels of oil per day to a subsea connection on existing deepwater pipeline infrastructure. It will be located approximately 170 miles south of the Louisiana coast and reach depths of up to 5,900 feet below water.

The proposed Big Foot pipeline will complement Enbridge’s previously announced plans to build the Walker Ridge offshore natural gas pipeline in the area for $500 million. Thus the company has committed a total of $750 million in pipelines to service oil and gas exploration from the Gulf. Enbridge said that the equity component of the projects will be financed through internally generated cash flow and surplus balance-sheet equity.

We believe the Big Foot deal will further strengthen Enbridge’s position as the leading pipeline services provider in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico region, which has substantial production growth potential. Together with the Walker Ridge development, this will also ensure the extension of the company’s 10 percent-plus average growth rate well beyond 2013.

Enbridge, a Canadian company, is a leader in energy transportation and distribution in North America and internationally. As a transporter of energy, Enbridge operates, in Canada and the U.S., the world's longest crude oil and liquids pipeline system. The company also has international operations and a growing involvement in the natural gas transmission and midstream businesses. As a distributor of energy, Enbridge owns and operates Canada's largest natural gas distribution company, and provides distribution services in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and New York State.

Read the full analyst report on "ENB"
Read the full analyst report on "CVX"
Read the full analyst report on "STO"
Zacks Investment Research

Last week, the Department of State issued a permit for Enbridge Inc. (ENB) to build the US portion of a cross-border pipeline. This project, called Alberta Clipper, will transfer crude oil from the tar sands area of Alberta, Canada to Midwestern US refineries.

However, four environmental organizations have vowed to legally challenge the decision as they argue that the pipeline will bring greenhouse-gas intensive oil sands crude from Canada, thereby contributing to global warming.

The company, together with its 12% owned master limited partnership Enbridge Energy Partners LP (EEP), is developing the $3.2 billion Alberta Clipper project. It involves construction of a 1000 mile, 36-inch diameter, heavy crude oil pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to Superior, Wisconsin, with an initial capacity of 450,000 barrels per day (Bbl/d), eventually expandable to 800,000 Bbl/d by adding pump and terminal stations.

Following receipt of the permit, Enbridge will immediately begin construction on the US leg of the project (approximately 330 miles of the new pipeline), expected to cost around $1.2 billion. The first part of the project (capacity of 450,000 Bbl/d) is expected to be in service by mid-2010.

Enbridge Inc., a Canadian company, is a leader in energy transportation and distribution in North America. It is also increasingly getting involved in natural gas transmission and midstream businesses. Enbridge owns and operates Canada’s largest natural gas distribution company and provides distribution services in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and New York State.
Objective Capital report issued on Mar 13, 2009 titled 'Colt Resources (COLT.CNQ) - Armamar Meda concession showing good potential'.
Despite the global recession, Colt Resources is continuing its exploration of the
Penedono gold project and the Armamar Merda tungsten project, which are
both in northern Portugal. The Armamar Meda concession, which surrounds
the Penedono property, is showing good potential for tungsten. Despite the
tough economic climate for resource companies, Colt continues to examine new
opportunities, and the company has added four new prospects in the Gaspesie
region of Quebec.
pOur revised model yields a core valuation of C$0.28 per share, slightly higher
than the C$0.26 value contained in our June 2008 initiation note. Our revised
estimate remains subject to substantial risk given the early stage of exploration
and uncertain economic conditions, but are accompanied by significant
upside potential with more optimistic expectations of exploration success
and continued development.

Objective Capital report issued on Mar 10, 2009 titled 'NioGold Mining Corp (NOX.V) - valuation robust despite recession and sector meltdown'.
NioGold is pressing ahead with exploration of its gold projects in the famous
Val d’Or mining district of Quebec. The company also holds a polymetallic
project at an earlier stage of exploration, also in Quebec, and it has added a
new prospect since our initiation note of June 2008. With its strong focus on
gold in a historic and accessible region of Canada, our valuation of NioGold
remains robust at C$0.23 per share, despite the global recession and resource
sector meltdown.

The bears continued to rule over the bigger board stocks, while the junior bourse managed to squeeze out a modest gain during Wednesday trading on the Canadian markets.

For the tale of the tape, the TSX Exchange fell 0.15%, while the TSX Gold Index tacked on 1.3% and the TSX Venture Exchange, Canada’s largest junior exploration bourse, added 0.78% with the declining issuers once again outpacing the advancers this time by a 464 to 403 margin on volume of 140 million shares traded.

Shares of Golden Predator Mines (GP) added C$0.10 to close at C$0.87 after the company reported a 3.5 metre intercept running 1% tungsten at its Springer project in Nevada.

Osisko Mining (OSK) continues to hit the goods at the South Barnat target some 1.2 km northeast of its Canadian Malartic deposit in Quebec. Highlights included 2.4 grams gold per tonne over 141.5 metres and 2.76 grams gold per tonne over 71.2 metres. The market however remains reluctant as Osisko ended the day down C$0.06 at C$3.54.

Sprott Resource (SCP) completed the sale of 17.05 million shares of PBS Coals and in the process pocketed over C$97 million after commissions. The cash rich company closed up C$0.09 at C$2.79.

The A flood of drill results are expected over the next few weeks and perhaps this will ignite a rather lackluster junior market currently plagued by a notable lack of buyers. We will see what Thursday trading has in store.
