Bookkeeping: Starting a Beachhead in American Superconductor (AMSC)

Trader Mark (June 12th, 2008) Writes:
We discussed this name earlier this week as a wind play... [Jun 10: American Superconductor (AMSC) with $450 Million Follow up Order from China]Much like Energy Conversion Devices (ENER) (which I highlighted in early May in the upper $40s, and is now in the mid $60s) this has been a "hope" company for a long time - long on promise, but short on execution. [May 8: Energy Conversion Devices - Is the Turnaround Finally Here?] But we've seen how the ship has appeared to come in for ENER, and perhaps the ship is coming in for controversial AMSC as well. They received a huge follow up order today. This appears to be a 3 year contract for $450 million. Considering the company is only doing under $200 million in revenue in total this year, the magnitude of this contract is enormous for this size of ...

Midwest is Under Water - It’s One thing to Read; It’s Another to See

Until you really see just how bad the rain is...You don't realize how much of an effect this is truly going to haveContinuing to add to Powershares DB Agriculture Fund (DBA) on pullbacks....Long Powershares DB Agriculture Fund in fund; no personal position

Bookkeeping: Cummins Engine (CMI) up 14% on… ?

Trader Mark (June 12th, 2008) Writes:
I have no idea why Cummins Engine (CMI) is up 14% this AM to the $72s; I do see a news event involving Caterpillar (CAT), and Navistar but fail to see a direct connection - I could be missing the forest for the trees. Either way I am going to use this opportunity to cut back my position from a 1.6% stake to 0.6% (I actually bought some yesterday as it spiked downward to its 50 day moving average, but not enough of a stake to mention, so sort of lucked out on those shares)If anyone can decipher why that news is good for Cummins or if there is something else going on behind the scenes with this name, feel free to add a comment. We'll buy back on future pullbacks.[Apr 30: Cummins Engine Excellent Report on Strong International Sales]...

Bookkeeping: Ringing the Register

Trader Mark (May 8th, 2008) Writes:
I don't have anything earth shattering to report on these sales, I just want to build more cash and lock in more profits in my layer in, layer out approach. These are names I have not taken any profits on of late, so I am going to begin now. Mechel (MTL) always seems to lag the other domestic names in iron/coal etc by a few days, so its finally making its move, so I am taking a bit off here; same with Cleveland Cliffs (CLF) which despite an "ok" quarter jumped post earnings - it seems people are willing to excuse any bad results in anything in the steel (or related) sectors at this point, and a bit off National Oilwell Varco (NOV). I reversed this week's earlier buys of Potash (POT) and Mosaic (MOS) for small losses (yes I'm a flip flopper - the charts looked ready for ...

Bookkeeping: Cutting Most of 3 Positions on Huge Runs

Trader Mark (May 7th, 2008) Writes:
Much like I did with Ctrip.com (CTRP) last week [May 2: Cutting Ctrip.com to Almost Nothing] I am going to cut these 3 positions to almost nil; they are small positions at this time as I cut them at lower prices, but the gains (% wise) have been huge, and the stocks are not near any major support. Fundamentals remain strong in all the stocks so there is no change in that area. Further, this does not mean the stocks need to pullback anytime soon but consistent with my strategy, I am simply going to take the last of these gains off the table and wait for meaningful pullbacks, after some staggering moves. These positions are in the 0.5-0.7% range of the portfolio, so I am essentially dropping them to what I call "holding positions" aka tiny positions (0.1% or 0.2%), but not selling them out ...
