AstraZeneca Seeks FDA Approval – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 20th, 2009) Writes:
Recently, AstraZeneca plc (AZN) announced the submission of a New Drug Application (NDA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its blood clot preventer Brilinta (ticagrelor). Brilinta is an oral reversible P2Y12 adenosine diphosphate receptor antagonist for arterial thrombosis aimed to compete with the blockbuster drug Plavix which is co-developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) and Sanofi-Aventis (SNY). On Oct 26, 2009, AstraZeneca filed for approval of the drug with the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) and is awaiting validation of the application.   AstraZeneca is seeking an FDA approval of Brilinta primarily on the basis of data from PLATO (a study of Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes), a late-stage 18,624 patient trial, that showed that Brilinta was more effective than Plavix in treating patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in 43 countries. Brilinta treatment resulted in a reduction of cardiovascular events (CV death, MI or ...

MDVN Starts New Alzheimer’s Trials – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 18th, 2009) Writes:
Earlier this month, Medivation, Inc. (MDVN) and Pfizer, Inc. (PFE) initiated two phase III studies, CONTACT and CONSTELLATION, with Dimebon in patients with moderate-to-severe Alzheimer's disease (AD). Dimebon is being developed in collaboration with Pfizer for the treatment of Alzheimer’s and Huntington diseases. The CONTACT study will assess the potential benefits of adding Dimebon to ongoing treatment with Pfizer’s Aricept on neuropsychiatric symptoms and activities of daily living. Meanwhile, the CONSTELLATION study will evaluate the effects of adding Dimebon to Forest Lab’s (FRX) Namenda, another standard of care, on cognition, memory and activities of daily living. Preclinical studies indicate that Dimebon has the potential to protect brain cells from damage and enhance brain cell survival, by stabilizing and improving mitochondrial function. Dimebon’s mechanism is distinct from currently available Alzheimer’s medications. Dimebon is currently in seven studies which are evaluating the safety and efficacy ...

M&A in Videoconferencing Market – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 17th, 2009) Writes:
Merger and acquisition activities are heating up in the unified collaborative solutions market that provides videoconferencing. Prompted by the severe economic downturn, business enterprises on a global basis are restricting travel budgets to control costs. This makes high-definition telepresence solutions a cost-induced alternative in an increasingly interactive world. This market stands to gain in the near future since enterprises, governments, and educational institutions are increasingly recognizing the productivity-enhancing benefits of video conferencing. Yesterday, Cisco System Inc. (CSCO) raised its acquisition price to $3.41 billion for Tandberg ASA, the largest videoconferencing product maker in the world with around 35% market share. Cisco itself is a developer of high-end videoconferencing solutions, which mainly comprises custom-designed digital boardrooms for executives and boards to hold global meetings. The merged entity will definitely be a much bigger player in the industry. On Nov 10, computer accessories maker Logitech International SA (...

Intel-AMD Deal Benefits Both – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 13th, 2009) Writes:
Intel Corp (INTC) has agreed to pay Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) $1.25 billion to settle long-standing disputes between the two chipmakers. This immediately takes care of the AMD lawsuit that was slated to come up for trial in roughly five months time.  Intel agreed to a set of business practices, including non-payment of financial incentives to companies that favored Intel chips over AMD and training of sales staff accordingly. We believe there are grey areas here, since Intel has in any case repeatedly denied such foul play.  The more significant outcome is the company’s release of AMD from the provisions of the x86 deal entered into in 1995. At that time, AMD had acquired the right to manufacture chips based on the x86 architecture. However, the Globalfoundries spinoff raised the issue of a fresh license, which Intel said was necessary and AMD said was not. ...

Terremark Loss Exceeds by a Penny – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 12th, 2009) Writes:
Terremark Worldwide (TMRK) announced results for the second quarter of fiscal 2010 (ended Sep 30, 2009) with reported loss per share of 12 cents exceeding the Zacks Consensus Estimate of loss of 11 cents. Net loss of $7.5 million for the quarter, represents an improvement from net loss of $8.4 million reported a year ago, boosted by higher sales.  Consolidated revenue of $69.8 million (up 17% year over year) was near the high-end of the company’s guidance for the quarter, fueled by healthy contract bookings. Adjusted EBITDA increased 82% year over year to $18 million, in line with the company’s guidance. The company added 64 new customers during the quarter, a sequential improvement, taking its total customer base to 1,119 at the end of the second quarter.  Total new contract bookings registered $34.2 million, an increase from $29 million reported in the previous quarter. This represents ...

Hewlett-Packard to Acquire 3Com – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 12th, 2009) Writes:
Hewlett Packard Company (HPQ) is planning to take over networking gear maker 3Com Corporation (COMS). The acquisition, valued at $2.7 billion, enables HP to challenge networking leader Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) on its own turf. HP’s current networking products, sold under the ProCurve brand, generate around $1 billion in annual sales (less than 1% of the company’s total revenue). The product line lacks competitive data center switches, which makes it hard to take market share from well-entrenched Cisco. 3Com's expertise is in networking products for data centers, which supports HP's ProCurve networking equipment. Although the company has seen better times, it has been beefing up its portfolio by utilizing its design capabilities in low-cost China. The company is, therefore, in a position to compete aggressively on price. 3Com’s challenges include its poor brand value in American and European markets and its weak position in ...

Lockheed Bags Trident Contract – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 26th, 2009) Writes:
Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) has recently bagged an $853.3 million contract from the U.S. Navy for the Trident II missile production and deployed system support. Work is expected to be completed by Dec 30, 2013.   Manufactured by Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Sunnyvale, California, Trident II is a submarine variant ballistic missile. It is extensively used by the U.S. and the U.K. The addition of $853.3 million would boost the beleaguered backlog of the company, which shrunk to $76.4 billion after the first nine months of the fiscal 2009 from $80.9 billion at year-end fiscal 2008. The downside in order backlog came through the cancellation of quite a few high-cost platform programs in recent times. Prominent among them were TSAT Mission Operations System (TMOS) contract, F-22 Raptor program and the VH-71 Presidential Helicopter (VH-71) program.   Lockheed Martin remains a key player within the military space and ...
