General Motors (hereafter, GM) -- presently, Motors Liquidation Company (MTLQQ) -- posted a narrower loss in the third quarter (Jul 10 - Sep 30) compared with the results depicted by "Old GM" in the first quarter, before the company was transformed by a stay in Chapter 11.

GM, which began operations as a new company on July 10, 2009, has revealed a net loss of $1.2 billion for the quarter, significantly less than $6 billion it lost in the first quarter. The company’s earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) before special items for the period were negative at $261 million. GM’s North American market showed a loss of $651 million while GM International Operations recorded a profit of $238 million.

The improvement was attributed to incentive programs including "Cash for Clunkers" and stability in the international market, especially China, Brazil, India and Russia (BRIC). In particular, the China market has been a significant contributor to the company’s results by maintaining a leading market share position.

GM and its joint venture partners in China continue to see an upward trend. They sold more than 478,000 vehicles in the quarter, up from approximately 364,000 and 451,000 units in the first and second quarters, respectively.

The company generated revenue of $28 billion -- up from the revenue recognized by "Old GM" in the prior quarter by $4.9 billion. The improvement in revenue was mainly caused by the Clunkers program and a higher global seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 67.8 million units compared to 62.7 million units in the previous quarter, besides GM’s stabilizing global share.

GM’s global share went up 0.3 percentage points to 11.9% in the quarter from the first half of the year. The U.S. market share was flat at 19.5% compared to the first half of the year. In BRIC, the company had 13% of the combined market share, up 0.2 percentage points from the prior quarter.

GM’s dealer inventories decreased 158,000 units to 424,000 vehicles in the U.S. at the end of reported quarter from the end of the prior quarter. Some of the brands that delivered strong retail performance in the U.S. include Chevrolet Camaro and GMC Terrain Chevrolet Equinox, Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac SRX. In the international market, brands that gained attention are Holden, Chevrolet Cruze, Daewoo Matiz Creative, Opel Astra and Chevrolet Agile.

GM’s structural cost has been significantly reduced by restructuring including salaried and hourly headcount reductions, engineering savings and volume related savings. In the first nine months of the year, structural cost declined by $6.7 million to $31.1 million compared to the year-ago period.

Financial Position and Loan Repayment

GM had positive operating cash flow, before special items, of $3.3 billion in the quarter. This reflected a favorable working capital impact from production start-up, timing of supplier payments and lower capital spending. As of Sep 30, 2009, cash and marketable securities grossed $42.6 billion.

GM has announced its plan to accelerate repayment of its outstanding $6.7 billion (13% of the $52 billion that U.S. taxpayers have invested in the company, mainly for a 61% ownership stake) in U.S. Treasury (UST) loans as well as the C$1.5 billion ($1.4 billion) in Export Development Canada (EDC) loans, ahead of the scheduled maturity date of July 2015. Improving global economic situation, stabilizing industry sales and healthier cash position are the underlying factors behind GM’s decision.

GM plans to repay the loans in quarterly installments from escrowed funds, beginning next month with an initial $1.2 billion payment to be made in December ($1 billion to the UST and $192 million to the EDC), followed by quarterly payments. Any escrowed funds available as of Jun 30, 2010, would be used to repay the UST and EDC loans unless the escrowed funds were extended one year by the UST. Any balance of funds would be released to the company after the repayment of the UST and EDC loans.

In addition, GM has begun to repay the German government loans that had been extended to support Opel. As of Sep 30, 2009, the company had a balance of €900 million ($1.3 billion), of which €500 million ($700 million) has been repaid in November. The outstanding amount of €400 million ($600 million) will be repaid at the end of the month.

Road Ahead

For the fourth quarter, GM has projected the industry SAAR volume in the U.S. to be 10.7 million units in the upcoming quarter, down from 11.7 million units in the reported quarter. Globally, the estimated figure is 65.4 million units. For 2010, GM has forecasted total industry volumes to be 62 - 65 million units globally and 11 - 12 million units in the U.S.

GM expects to have negative net cash flows in the fourth quarter due to several factors including cash outflows related to the Delphi settlement and payments for U.S., Canada, Ontario and German government loans. Consequently, cash balances at the end of the year are expected to be materially lower than third quarter levels of $42.6 billion.

Steel Output Mounting

The Steel industry, which consists of companies engaged in the extraction of iron ore and coke coal for the processing of iron and steel, has the major chunk of sales concentrated with a few producers. The industry includes metal ore exploration and mining services, iron and steel foundries for smelting, rolling, forging, spinning, recycling, stamping, polishing and plating of iron and steel products such as pipes, tubes, wire, spring, rolls and bars.

The largest drivers of steel consumption have historically been the automotive and construction markets, which make up more than 50% of total steel consumption. Other steel consuming industries include appliances, converters, containers, tin, energy, electrical equipment, agricultural, domestic and commercial equipment and industrial machinery. The Asia-Pacific region, especially China and India, is witnessing higher production and consumption of steel. This is due to the per capita consumption reaching up to U.S./European levels, which could, theoretically at least, double steel demand in the longer-term. China has set up the largest steel industries in the world, driven by increasing demand for rapid urbanization and large infrastructure projects. The country accounted for nearly 50% of monthly total world production in August 2009.

China’s share is larger than the combined production of the U.S., the European Union (EU), Russia and Japan, which have historically been the largest producers of steel. In 2001, China's annual share of world production stood at 17%, while the EU accounted for the largest share at 18%. In eight years, China's share of world production has almost tripled, while other producers have seen their shares decrease. Ranked behind China are Japan and the U.S.

According to the World Steel Association, global steel output had increased to 107 million tons in the month of September 2009, down marginally (0.6%) from the same month of the previous year. Month-on-month, steel output improved slightly from 106.5 million tons. World crude steel production has continued to show a steady increase since April 2009. Steel production had reached its highest level in July this year on the back of a moderate rise in demand and the resumption of idled facilities by producers. The total output of 103.9 million tons was an improvement of 4% from 99.8 million tons produced in October, but down 11.1% year over year.

All major steel producing countries -- China, Japan, Germany, the U.S., Brazil, Turkey, Russia and the Ukraine -- have shown peak monthly figures so far this year. Production in the Middle East, where demand was buoyant last year due to booming infrastructure spending, edged up by 2.0% in September, while monthly steel output in Asia increased 15% to over 60 million tons. Of this, production in China climbed 28.7% to 39.4 million tons. However, global steel production was down 32.3% in North America while production in Europe saw a drop of 23.7%.

According to the data released by the International Trade Administration, steel prices increased across almost all product groups in September 2009 from August 2009. Hot-rolled sheet prices increased 12.6% to $535 per ton from $475 per ton. Cold-rolled sheet increased 10.04% to $625 per from $568 per ton. Stainless sheet prices increased 2.7% to $2,334 per ton.

Steel prices across all product groups have fallen significantly from the previous year despite recent price increases, with the price of hot-rolled sheet showing a 54.6% decrease and cold-rolled sheet a 41.3% decrease from September 2008.

In 2007, China’s steel industry revealed signs of consolidation in a market that was previously rather fragmented and in need of mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Despite the current slowdown in consolidation within the global steel industry, M&A activity remains a critically important business strategy for companies. While the economic downturn is a significant factor in short-term decisions regarding M&A activity, steel companies expect to make acquisitions over the next three years.

OPPORTUNITIES

We expect global steel demand to improve in the long term with the recovery of the user industries. China is expected to remain the largest consumer of steel going forward. World Steel is forecasting an 8.6% year over year decline in steel production, better than the previous forecast of a 14.1% decline, driven by a strong growth in Chinese steel demand. With signs of a recovery across the world since the beginning of the second half of 2009, the association is anticipating global steel demand in 2010 to grow by 9.2% to 1,206 million tons, which is similar to the level in 2008.

With steel demand picking up in the last couple of months, steel producers are restarting facilities. U.S. Steel Corp. is restarting its blast furnace at its Hamilton, Ontario plant after a nine-month shutdown. The company had closed its Hamilton blast furnace in November 2008. It had suspended the remaining operations at Hamilton and the Nanticoke operation in March 2009 due to a drop in demand. Both the facilities were running at less than half their capacity.

Net losses for Nucor Corporation, the largest recycler of steel scrap in the U.S., narrowed to $29.5 million, or 10 cents per share, for the third quarter of 2009. The result was more positive than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 14 cents. Long-term contracts, cost reduction efforts and a dominant acquisition strategy inspire optimism about the company’s performance in the coming quarters.

The third largest steel maker in the U.S., Steel Dynamics Inc. reported net income of $69 million -- 30 cents per share -- for the third quarter of 2009, after reporting losses for three consecutive quarters. The earnings, which were driven by cost reduction through higher production and shipping volumes at the Flat Roll Division and better-than-expected performance in the Metals Recycling segment, were higher than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 23 cents. However, on a year-over-year basis, earnings were down 69%.

WEAKNESSES

The global steel industry is cyclical, highly competitive and has historically been characterized by overcapacity. Production cuts of up to 35% are occurring to keep operating rates in the low-80s and keep the market balanced. The U.S. domestic production capacity utilization has fallen dramatically since August 2008. Capacity utilization peaked in February 2008 at a level of 91.6%. In May 2009, estimated capacity utilization was 44.3%, less than half of its level six months ago. Capacity utilization reached its lowest point, 40.9%, in December 2008, though it has increased again since May 2009.

Overcapacity in the global steel industry could increase the level of steel imports and result in downward pressure on steel prices. Overcapacity in China has the potential to result in a further increase in imports of low-priced, unfairly traded steel and steel products to the U.S. In recent years, capacity growth in China has significantly exceeded the growth in Chinese market demand. A continuation of this unbalanced growth trend or a significant decrease in China’s rate of economic expansion could result in China increasing steel exports.

Key steel consuming industries such as auto, shipbuilding and construction had been experiencing weak demand in the last quarters, forcing global steel makers to slacken production levels. U.S. Steel, the eighth largest steel producer in the world, the largest integrated steel producer headquartered in North America, and one of the largest integrated flat-rolled producers in Central Europe, slashed production by almost 62% during the second quarter of 2009, while Korean steel maker POSCO cut production by about 15% in December last year. This was the first time in its history that POSCO was forced to take such a measure, proof of the very bad operating environment.

The current low demand from the automotive and residential sectors and rising labor costs are affecting producers in the steel industry. Weak demand and significantly lower operating rates have forced producers to shut down facilities. The slowdown in the U.S./Europe/Japanese economies remains a negative issue facing steel producers. The automotive market has yet to recover fully. Steel shipments are off at a double-digit rate.

As a whole, the steel industry posted weak results in the third quarter of 2009. U.S. Steel Corporation recorded its third sequential loss -- $3.03 billion, or $2.11 per share -- in the third quarter of 2009, in contrast to a net income of $9.19 billion or $7.79 per share in the third quarter of 2008. Commercial metals company AK Steel posted a negligible income of $6.2 million compared to $188.3 million in the same quarter of 2008.

Despite a sharp rise in steel prices in September 2009, the future pricing remains uncertain, and we believe continued demand weakness, production resumption by some mills and lower iron ore and coking coal prices in the second half of 2009 would drive monthly prices down again. The recent significant reduction in global steel production in late 2008 and into 2009 has resulted in decreases in many raw material prices.

We expect that such prices will rebound when global steel production returns to more customary levels. In contrast, prices for steelmaking commodities such as steel scrap, coal, coke, iron ore, zinc, tin and other metallic additions have escalated significantly over the last several years due primarily to growth in worldwide steel production, especially in China.Zacks Investment Research

ArvinMeritor’s Loss Deepens – Analyst Blog

ArvinMeritor (ARM) showed a loss of $20 million or 28 cents per share, before special items, in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year ended Sep 30, 2009. This is wider than the quarter-ago loss of 25 cents per share and compared to year-ago profit of $26 million or 35 cents per share.

The loss was attributed to incremental tax expenses during the quarter due to the inability to recognize the tax benefit of losses in certain countries. However, the loss was narrower than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 32 cents per share.

Sales in the quarter totaled $984 million, a decline of 36% from the year-ago level of $1.5 billion. This was driven by continued weakness across the global markets. However, sales increased by 4% compared to the previous quarter of fiscal year 2009 due to improved conditions in global markets, particularly in China, India and Brazil.

Cost Reductions

ArvinMeritor achieved cost savings of $195 million in fiscal 2009, exceeding the target of $125 million under its Performance Plus plan. The cost savings were helped by layoffs and temporary salary reductions, curtailment in capital spending, extended manufacturing shutdowns, elimination of training programs, suspension of the quarterly dividend and elimination of all non-critical discretionary spending.

The company also announced the closure of its assembly, machining and casting facility in Carrollton, Kentucky and the braking systems facility in Tilbury, Ontario, Canada.

Divestitures

ArvinMeritor completed the sale of its entire ownership interest in Gabriel de Venezuela and Meritor Suspension Systems Company joint ventures, Wheels business and Gabriel Ride Control Products in North America.

These transactions largely completed the divestiture of Chassis Systems business under the company’s Light Vehicle Systems (LVS) business segment. The divestments reduced the company's overall light vehicle business to 25% of total sales at the end of its fiscal year.

Business Segments Redefined

ArvinMeritor redefined its reporting segments following the recent divestiture of most of its LVS businesses. For continuing operations, the company has informed that it will report results as defined within Commercial Truck, Industrial, Aftermarket & Trailer and Light Vehicle Systems. Of these four segments, the first three have been considered core to the company.

Financial Position

ArvinMeritor had cash and cash equivalents of $95 million as of Sep 30, 2009. Long-term debt amounted to $1.1 billion as of that date. The company had a shareholder deficit of $1.3 billion as of the same period.

Free cash flow was $22 million in the fourth quarter compared to $103 million in the prior fiscal year quarter. The company had $95 million in cash balance and an unutilized commitment of $611 million under its revolving credit facility as of Sep 30, 2009.

In fiscal 2009, ArvinMeritor had a net cash outflow of $295 million from operating activities, in sharp contrast to an inflow of $163 million in the previous fiscal year. Meanwhile, capital expenditure reduced to $111 million from $138 million in fiscal 2008.

Looking Ahead

In the upcoming fiscal year, ArvinMeritor expects revenue to be higher and free cash flow to breakeven. In addition, the company expects capital expenditures in the range of $90 million to $110 million.

Despite its efficient cost management and commendable global footprint, we believe difficult market conditions across the global automotive markets will continue to adversely affect the company. This has led us to maintain our Neutral recommendation for the stock.

BP Tops on Better Cost Control

BP plc (BP) reported its third quarter 2009 results of $1.71 per ADS (American Depositary Share), beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.14 on the back of stronger cost controls and increased upstream volumes. However, in comparison with the year-earlier results, earnings fell approximately 34% on lower oil prices.

BP’s strong performance sets the stage for earnings releases by ExxonMobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX), which are scheduled to report their results on Thursday and Friday this week, respectively.

BP expects its capex budget to be $20 billion for the year. The company’s attractive dividend (currently yielding around 6%) remains unchanged from the year-ago level. We believe that BP’s dividend is safe with the recent uptrend in oil prices.

Net cash provided by operating activities for the quarter was $8.1 billion compared with $14.9 billion a year ago. Net debt at the end of the quarter was $26.3 billion, representing net debt-to-capitalization ratio of 21% (compared with 17% a year ago).

Steel Output Mounting

U.S. Steel Corp. (X) had slashed production by almost 62% during the second quarter of 2009, while Korean steel maker POSCO (PKX) was forced to reduce production for the first time in its history. POSCO curtailed production by about 15% during the period.

However, with steel demand picking up in the last couple of months, United States Steel Corp. is restarting its blast furnace at its Hamilton, Ontario, plant after a nine-month shutdown. Labor unrest at Ford’s (F) auto supplier plant in India has prompted the company to shut down its Oakville, Ontario, plant for the week, which employs 3,000 workers in two shifts. The closure would cost Ford 5,000 vehicles. The idled employees would get 65% of regular pay from a combination of funding from the company and employment insurance.

The strike at Rico Auto Industries in the state of Haryana in India turned violent after an employee died recently during a protest. It has triggered a shortage of transmission parts to the Canadian plant. The plant produces Edge SUV, the Flex and Lincoln MKT seven-passenger vehicle and the Lincoln MKX.

Last week, labor trouble had erupted at some of Ford’s plants when some members of United Auto Workers (UAW) declined to ratify the modifications to its 2007 labor contract. The modifications include banning strikes over wages or benefits, freezing entry-level wages and changing work rules to require some skilled-trade employees to multi-task. Under the deal, the union is also required to enter arbitration with Ford rather than strike in the next round of contract talks in 2011.

Gary Walkowicz – a member of the bargaining committee at the Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan – and six other plant leaders had signed a letter to employees urging them to vote against the agreement as it would require too many concessions and would limit the workers' right to strike.

The ratification agreement, which would run till 2011, would have helped Ford end its cost disadvantage. The company was upset with its higher labor costs compared to its Detroit rivals, General Motors and Chrysler. Both of its rivals were given concessions by UAW as they headed into bankruptcy protection earlier this year. Thus, Ford intends to lower its labor costs to match its rivals.

However, the workers opposing the deal have a different standpoint. They have argued that Ford is presently a healthier company compared to General Motors and Chrysler, which accepted federal bailout funds and went into bankruptcy earlier this year. Ford showed a net income of $2.3 billion or 69 cents per share in the second quarter of the year, its first profit since the first quarter last year. This was against a net loss of $8.7 billion or $3.89 per share in the second quarter of 2008.

Ford will also resume discussion on contract negotiations with the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW). Both the parties opened negotiations last month for a contract agreement that could preserve jobs in Canada by allowing for future investment, besides addressing a wage gap compared with workers at the U.S. plants.

Steel Output Mounting – Analyst Blog

According to the data released by the World Steel Association (WSA), global steel output increased to 107 million tons in the month of Sep 2009, down marginally (0.6%) from the same month of the previous year. Month-on-month, steel output improved slightly from 106.5 million tons. World crude steel production has continued to show a steady increase since Apr 2009.

Steel production had reached its highest level in July this year on the back of a moderate rise in demand and the resumption of idled facilities by producers. Total output of 103.9 million tons was an improvement of 4% from 99.8 million tons produced in the last month, but down 11.1% year over year.

All major steel producing countries such as China, Japan, Germany, the U.S., Brazil, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine showed peak monthly figures so far this year. Production in the Middle East, where demand was buoyant last year due to booming infrastructure spending, edged up 2% in September. Monthly steel output in Asia increased 15% to over 60 million tons in September. Of this, production in China − the world’s biggest producer and consumer of steel − climbed 28.7% to 39.4 million tons. However, global steel production was down 32.3% in North America in the month of September while production in Europe saw a drop of 23.7%.

Key steel consuming industries such as auto, shipbuilding and construction have been experiencing weak demand in the last quarters, forcing global steel makers to lower production levels. U.S. Steel Corp. (X) had slashed production by almost 62% during the second quarter of 2009, while Korean steel maker POSCO (PKX) was forced to reduce production for the first time in its history. POSCO curtailed production by about 15% during the period.

However, with steel demand picking up in the last couple of months, United States Steel Corp. is restarting its blast furnace at its Hamilton, Ontario, plant after a nine-month shutdown. U.S. Steel had closed the Hamilton blast furnace in Nov 2008. It suspended the remaining operations at Hamilton and the Nanticoke facilities in March 2009 due to a drop in demand. Both the facilities were running at less than half their capacity.

We expect global steel demand to improve in the rest of 2009 with a strong surge from the user industries. China is expected to continue to remain the largest consumer of steel going forward. The World Steel Association is forecasting a 8.6% year over year decline in steel production, better than the previous forecast of a 14.1% decline driven by a strong uptick in Chinese steel demand. With signs of a recovery across the world from the second half of 2009, the association is anticipating global steel demand in 2010 to grow by 9.2% to 1,206 million tons, which is a restoration to the level of 2008.

U.S. Bank Failures Reach 99 in ‘09

The failure of San Joaquin Bank represents another impact on the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (FDIC) fund for protecting customer accounts as it has been appointed receiver for the bank. The bank failure is expected to cost the deposit insurance fund an estimated $103 million.

The FDIC insures deposits at 8,195 institutions with roughly $13.5 trillion in assets. When a bank fails, it reimburses customers for deposits of up to $250,000 per account. The outbreak of financial institution failures has significantly stretched the regulator’s deposit insurance fund. At June 30, 2009, the fund corpus fell to $10.4 billion, the lowest since 1993, from $13.0 billion in the prior quarter.

Ontario, California-based Citizens Business Bank, a subsidiary of CVB Financial (CVBF), will assume all of the deposits of San Joaquin Bank. So there will be no losses to any depositor.

In order to replenish the declining fund, the FDIC board recently proposed that the U.S. banks should pay fees for three years in advance. Also, the regulators are considering requesting the healthy banks to bail out the government as soon as it is necessary to replenish the deposit insurance fund, which has slipped to 0.22% of insured deposits, below the mandated minimum of 1.15%.

In the second quarter of 2009, the number of banks on the FDIC's list of problem institutions grew to 416 from 305 in the first quarter. This is the highest since the savings and loan crisis in 1994. Increasing loan losses on commercial real estate are expected to cause hundreds more bank failures in the next few years. The FDIC anticipates the bank failures to cost about $70 billion over the next five years.

The failure of Washington Mutual last year was the largest in the U.S. history. It was acquired by JP Morgan Chase (JPM). The other major acquirers of failed institutions since 2008 include Fifth Third Bancorp (FITB), U.S. Bancorp (USB), Zions Bancorp (ZION) and several others.

U.S. bank failures continue unabated as U.S. regulators on Friday closed down San Joaquin Bank of Bakersfield, CA. This takes the total number of failed federally insured banks to 99 in 2009, compared to 25 in 2008 and 3 in 2007.

As of September 29, San Joaquin Bank, a subsidiary of San Joaquin Bancorp, had about $775 million in assets, $631 million in deposits and 5 branches. The bank had not been included in a previous list of 89 institutions that were undercapitalized as of March 31. But its first quarter amended filing showed that there were additional loan charge-offs and a higher net loss.

As of June 30, San Joaquin Bank’s Tier 1 leverage ratio was 4.12% and the total risk-based capital ratio was 6.70%. Though the Tier 1 leverage ratio was above the minimum level of 4% considered adequately capitalized, its total risk-based capital ratio was well below the minimum level of 8%.

The failed banks are victims of recession and rising loan losses. As a result of the ongoing market turmoil, these institutions experienced massive capital erosion stemming from losses due to a significant exposure to collateralized mortgage obligations, commercial real estate loans and other commercial and industrial loans. All these factors were responsible for a drag on profitability and write-downs.

According to the FDIC, the U.S. banks overall lost $3.7 billion in the second quarter of 2009, compared to a profit of $7.6 billion in the prior quarter.  Though current signals indicate that the economy may stabilize, we expect loan losses on commercial real estate portfolio to remain high for banks that hold large amounts of high-risk loans.

General Dynamics Corporation (GD) recently received a $647 million contract from the U.S. Army TACOM Lifecycle Management Command for production of 352 Stryker vehicles. The contract was awarded to General Dynamics’ subsidiary General Dynamics Land Systems. The company expects to begin vehicle deliveries in July 2010. Work on the contract will be performed in Anniston, AL; Sterling Heights, MI; Lima, OH; and Ontario, Canada.

The Stryker contract was originally awarded to General Dynamics in 2000. To date, the company has delivered 2,988 vehicles and trained 18,438 soldiers in their operations. The U.S. Army has seven Stryker Brigade Combat Teams, three of which are deployed in combat zones - two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan.

Earlier, General Dynamics had maintained its brisk pace in order booking, taking the total backlog at the end of the second quarter of fiscal 2009 to $67.6 billion. This was a 22.2% rise compared to the $55.3 billion figure in the year-ago quarter.

General Dynamics engages in mission-critical information systems and technologies; land and expeditionary combat vehicles, armaments and munitions; shipbuilding and marine systems; and business aviation. The company operates through four segments - Information Systems & Technology (IS&T), Combat Systems, Marine Systems and Aerospace.

We view General Dynamics as a well-run company that is likely to continue to deliver on expectations driven by strong revenue growth, margin expansion and cash-flow generation. Strong defense outlays should further improve the company’s outlook for shareholders while an increasing funded backlog and an improving balance sheet signal additional positive factors for the company. We maintain our Neutral recommendation on the shares.

Daimler (DAI) has revealed its optimism about the U.S. truck market stating that the market has bottomed. The company has predicted that the North American truck market sales would rise 10% in 2010. Citing possible improvement in consumer and housing markets in the U.S. due to government stimulus, Andreas Renschler – a member of Daimler's board – has commented that demand for trucks carrying consumer goods or construction materials would revive.

In line with this expectation, the company has reversed its decision to close the Oregon truck plant last month. Last year, the company had slashed capacity by closing plants in Ontario and Oregon , aiming to improve annual earnings by $900 million within 2011. Nevertheless, Daimler believed that the global sales would not return to such peak levels in the near future.

The company anticipated demand for medium- and heavy-duty trucks to fall 50%–60% in Western Europe this year, and 40% in Japan and North America . Daimler Truck revenue slashed 33% to €9.2 billion ($13.5 billion) in the first half of the year.

The division sold about 120,000 trucks in the period, down 48% from the year ago level. Daimler’s Trucks segment develops and produces vehicles within a global network under brands such as Mercedes Benz, Freightliner, Sterling , Western Star and Mitsubishi Fuso. The segment has 35 production facilities.

In the segment, the company intends to achieve an average return on sales of 8% throughout its business cycle by 2010. Daimler has the advantage of an extremely versatile product range in the Trucks division.

This includes economical and environment-friendly trucks with the BLUETEC technology for the European markets, the new generation of the Actros launched at the end of January 2008, the new Cascadia heavy-duty truck under the Freightliner brand for North America, improved Mitsubishi Fuso Super Great heavy-duty truck and the low-emission version of the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter light-duty truck for the Asian markets. We recommend the shares of Daimler as Neutral.

Ciena Takes Over Nortel’s Unit – Analyst Blog

Yesterday, telecommunications and network equipment company Ciena Corporation (CIEN) announced the acquisition of substantially all of the optical networking and carrier Ethernet assets of its rival Nortel Networks’ (NT) Metro Ethernet Networks (MEN) division, for a total of $521 million ($390 million in cash and 10 million in shares worth $131 million based on the Oct. 6 market price).

Ciena will take over Nortel’s long-haul optical transport portfolio, metro optical Ethernet switching and transport solutions, Ethernet transport, aggregation and switching technology, multiservice SONET/SDH product families and network management software products.

Moreover, Ciena expects to incur integration-related costs of approximately $180 million, the majority of which will be paid in 2010 and expects the transaction to be significantly accretive in fiscal 2011.

Nortel had filed for bankruptcy protection back in January in Canada, and has since then planned to sell off its assets. Nortel had sold its wireless carrier business to Sweden's Ericsson (ERIC) for $1.13 billion in July. This was followed by the sale of its Enterprise unit to Avaya for $915 million.

Ciena is expected to employ at least 2,000, or 85% of Nortel employees. The acquisition would significantly enhance Ciena’s existing Canadian development resources, making Ottawa the company’s largest product and development center. Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. and Foros Securities LLC served as financial advisors in the deal.

Ciena’s Carrier Ethernet platform enables differentiation and provides a competitive advantage to the company. We believe the deal could provide strong growth potential to Ciena’s rapidly expanding metro Ethernet business and optical networking products.

For the third quarter, Ciena generated approximately 14% of total revenue from metro Ethernet products. The company expects the Ethernet division to be a major contributor to growth, going forward. Besides, the merger could double Ciena’s revenue. Ciena had total revenue of f $902 million in 2008, while Nortel’s Ethernet business generated $1.36 billion in revenue in 2008 and $556 million in the first six months of 2009.

Moreover, the acquisition would provide tough competition to other players in the networking industry such as Ericsson, Nokia (NOK) and Siemens (SI). Longer-term, we view the deal to be positive for Ciena.

However, Ciena is a small player with minimal revenues. Therefore, Ciena could face integration problems. For example, Nortel had $10.4 billion in 2008 revenue compared to Ciena’s $902.5 million. Moreover their products overlap and may affect Ciena’s Ethernet business in future quarters.

Second, we believe that the deal could pull Ciena into a net debt (debt exceeding cash) position. The company exited the most recent quarter (second quarter) with $1.07 billion in cash, short-term investments and long term investments and had $798.0 million in long term debt (convertible notes payable). Moreover, risk of dilution remains.

Ciena said that the agreement is subject to a competitive bidding process under the United States Bankruptcy Code and the Canadian Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act. The deal is subject to approval of courts in Delaware and Ontario.

Intense competition from companies such as Alcatel-Lucent (ALU), Cisco Systems (CSCO) and Tellabs (TLAB) is eating into the company’s market share. However, we do expect a recovery in 2010 due to operational execution and growth in data traffic.

We have a Neutral rating on the stock.

Enbridge Signs GoM Pipeline Deal – Analyst Blog

Calgary-based Enbridge Inc. (ENB) recently announced that it reached an agreement with subsidiaries of U.S. oil major Chevron Corp. (CVX), Norway’s StatoilHydro ASA (STO) and Japan’s Marubeni Corp. to construct and operate a 40-mile, 20-inch oil pipeline from the proposed Big Foot ultra deepwater development in the Gulf of Mexico.

The planned conduit is estimated to cost approximately $250 million and will transport about 100,000 barrels of oil per day to a subsea connection on existing deepwater pipeline infrastructure. It will be located approximately 170 miles south of the Louisiana coast and reach depths of up to 5,900 feet below water.

The proposed Big Foot pipeline will complement Enbridge’s previously announced plans to build the Walker Ridge offshore natural gas pipeline in the area for $500 million. Thus the company has committed a total of $750 million in pipelines to service oil and gas exploration from the Gulf. Enbridge said that the equity component of the projects will be financed through internally generated cash flow and surplus balance-sheet equity.

We believe the Big Foot deal will further strengthen Enbridge’s position as the leading pipeline services provider in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico region, which has substantial production growth potential. Together with the Walker Ridge development, this will also ensure the extension of the company’s 10 percent-plus average growth rate well beyond 2013.

Suncor to Expand Ethanol Plant – Analyst Blog

Suncor Energy (SU) recently resumed the expansion of its St. Clair ethanol plant near Sarnia, Ontario, with completion expected in late 2010 or early 2011. The $120 million construction project is expected to double the plant's ethanol production capacity from 200 to 400 million liters per year.

The project synergies will also extend to the Sarnia-Lambton area with the creation of 350 jobs during construction and 15 new jobs to operate the expanded plant. It will also generate demand for feedstock - approximately 40 million bushels of corn annually - from local farmers.

The St. Clair facility is the platform for growth of Suncor's biofuels portfolio and has contributed to the development of a competitive domestic industry for renewable fuels since 2006. The expansion not only reinforces Suncor’s commitment to increasing renewable energy options in Canada but also builds on the strength of local relationships forged in St. Clair Township and the Sarnia-Lambton region.

The expanded plant along with Suncor's investment in four wind power projects across Canada is expected to offset nearly 1 million tons of carbon dioxide per year - the equivalent of the annual tailpipe emissions of approximately 200,000 cars.

Telus Corp (TU), Canada’s second largest telecom carrier, has reportedly acquired Black’s Photo Corporation (Black’s), a leading imaging and digital retailer in Canada , for C$28 million (US$26 million). For nearly 80 years, Black’s has been a premier distributor of cameras, accessories, albums and printing services that are complementary to Telus’ wireless offerings.

Telus’ wireless devices will feature in Black’s nationwide retail outlets, addressing the growing demand for mobile handsets embedded with high quality photo and video capability. APD Buys New Hydrogen Plant – Analyst Blog

Air Products (APD) acquired a new steam methane reformer (SMR) hydrogen facility from MarkWest Energy Partners L.P. (MWE). The facility, which is under construction, is in Corpus Christi, Texas. The company did not disclose the financial details of the transaction.

This acquisition further reinforces Air Products’ position as a leading hydrogen provider in the U.S. Gulf Coast. The company said that the new facility, which is expected to be operational in March 2010, will produce over 30 million standard cubic feet per day. It will be owned and operated by Air Products.

The companies also signed a separate long-term supply agreement whereby Air Products will provide hydrogen and steam to MarkWest.

Earlier this year, Air Products strengthened its U.S. Gulf Coast hydrogen pipeline network with the successful completion of a pipeline connection across Lake Pontchartrain. The company said that this enhances the supply reliability and efficiency to its own liquid hydrogen production plant in New Orleans, which is the largest liquid hydrogen facility in the world. In addition, Air Products is in the process of building two new steam methane reformers in the Louisiana portion of its Gulf Coast system.

Air Products has hydrogen pipeline networks operating around the world, including in Southern California, U.S., in Sarnia, Ontario, and Edmonton, Alberta in Canada, and in Rotterdam in The Netherlands.

During the second quarter conference call, the company said that the refinery hydrogen volumes continued to increase. Further, the company expects these volumes to increase modestly from the current levels across most of its pipeline franchises, due to higher demand and fewer customer outages.

GM Expects 15% Sales Rise in 2010 – Analyst Blog

General Motors (hereafter GM) has revealed that it anticipates its U.S. sales to surge 15% from 2009 to 2010. The expectation has certainly been boosted by the company’s performance in the Cash for Clunkers program. The program, launched by the U.S. Government in late July, allowed consumers to trade in their old gas-guzzling cars and trucks with a mileage of 18 miles per gallon (mpg) or less for a value of up to $3,500–$4,500.

In terms of market share, GM's 17.6% took second place in the program after Toyota (TM) (19.4%). On the back of this overwhelming response in the program, in late August GM revealed its plan to add 60,000 vehicles to its production schedule in the third and fourth quarters and bring back about 1,350 laid-off workers.

GM has targeted to produce 535,000 cars and trucks during July–September. This implies a 35% increase in output compared to the second quarter. The company plans to raise production in the final three months of the year by another 20%.

GM will also add shifts to factories in Ingersoll, Ontario and Lordstown, Ohio. The Ingersoll plant manufactures the new Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossover vehicles, both of which boast 32 mpg on the highway. The Lordstown plant makes the Chevrolet Cobalt small car – the company’s highest-mileage car (37 mpg) – that had been among the top 10 on the Cash for Clunkers purchase list.

Production will also be pushed up at other North American factories. This includes models such as Chevrolet HHR small wagon, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups, the Chevrolet Camaro muscle car, the Buick LaCrosse sedan and the Cadillac SRX and CTS Wagon models.

U.S. Steel Restarting Facility – Analyst Blog

United States Steel Corp. (X) is restarting its blast furnace at its Hamilton, Ontario plant as steel demand edges higher after a nine-month shutdown.

Demand for U.S. Steel’s flat-rolled steel has improved after bottoming in April and May, this year and is likely to improve going forward. The largest steel producer in the U.S. expects mill-operating rates to exceed 50% in the current quarter, up from 32% in the prior period.

U.S. Steel acquired the Hamilton and Nanticoke plants in Ontario from Canadian peer Stelco Inc. for about $1.1 billion in 2007. The Hamilton operation has an annual production capacity of about 2 million tons. The facility also consists of galvanizing lines and a cold mill. However, the company does not plan to restart these for now.

U.S. Steel had closed the Hamilton blast furnace in November 2008. It suspended the remaining operations at Hamilton and the Nanticoke operation in March 2009 due to a drop in demand. Both the facilities were running below half of their capacity. The shutdown resulted in lay offs of about 1500 workers. However, the company recalled about 800 to 950 employees at the Hamilton plant in July.

A day before, workers of U.S. Steel approved Lakeside’s bid to acquire the Ontario production unit. Lakeside Steel is a steel pipe and tubing manufacturer in Welland, Ontario.

The Canadian government has alleged U.S. Steel of failing to meet commitments on production and employment. While acquiring Stelco in 2007, U.S. had agreed to produce 3.95 million tons of steel per year and employ about 3,100 workers through Nov. 1, 2007 to Oct. 31, 2010. A federal court in the U.S. will evaluate these charges today.

Steelworkers Support Lakeside Bid – Analyst Blog

The workers of the largest steel producer in the U.S., United States Steel Corporation (X), are supporting a bid made by Lakeside Steel, a steel pipe and tubing manufacturer in Welland, Ontario to take over U.S. Steel's Ontario production assets. U.S. Steel had acquired the Ontario assets when it bought Stelco Inc. for about $1.1 billion in 2007.

On August 5, 2009, Lakeside had filed for an intervener status in the federal government's action against U.S. Steel. U.S. Steel had violated commitments for production and employment when it had temporarily shut down most of the Ontario operations in March this year due to weak steel demand. The company’s facilities are operating at barely half their capacity.

U.S. Steel’s production of 5 million tons in July 2009 was the highest monthly output this year, but it was 41.6% lower than July 2008. The company has laid off most of the workers at the site and has locked out the remaining unionized workers at Nanticoke this month after failing to reach a new labor deal.

Lakeside claimed that if it acquires U.S. Steel, it would comply with all its commitments on production and employment. The company hopes Canada's Federal Court will force Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel to sell the Ontario assets.

Lakeside and the United Steel’s workers will submit their case at a Canadian Federal Court hearing in Toronto on August 31, 2009.

Toyota to Shutter NUMMI – Analyst Blog

Toyota Motors (TM) has revealed that it will close down the New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) plant in Fremont, California, which had been operated with General Motors since 1984. The move is a part of the company’s plan to reduce worldwide capacity by 700,000 to 1 million vehicles.

NUMMI, opened by General Motors in 1962, was shut down in 1982 on the back of operational inefficiency. However, the plant was reopened two years later when it became a 50/50 joint venture between General Motors and Toyota.

NUMMI was a remarkable joint venture in America’s as well as Toyota’s history. The joint venture taught Americans about the famous Japanese "lean manufacturing system" (focused on just-in-time delivery) through NUMMI, and Toyota took its first step in the U.S. using GM’s supply lines. NUMMI has produced Corolla and Tacoma for Toyota and Pontiac Vibe for GM. However, GM had decided to pull out of NUMMI after completing its bankruptcy filing in June, as it will discontinue the Pontiac brand.

Toyota will stop production at NUMMI in March 2010 and will shift production to its other plants in the U.S., Canada and Japan. Production of the Corolla subcompact will be moved to Cambridge, Ontario, as well as Japan, and Tacoma pickups will be produced in San Antonio, TX.

Toyota has been buffeted financially by the economic crisis. The company posted its first annual loss (¥437 billion or $4.4 billion) since 1950 for the fiscal year ended March 2009. Further, management has recently projected its net loss to worsen to ¥550 billion ($5.5 billion) for the fiscal year ending March 2010.

According to the East Bay Economic Development Alliance, the NUMMI closure would cost 5,400 direct jobs and 30,000 indirect jobs. Toyota has 12 manufacturing facilities in the U.S. Presently, six of them are operating under capacity and one has been idled in Mississippi.

Chrysler Takes Daimler to Court – Analyst Blog

Chrysler Group LLC. filed a lawsuit against its former parent Daimler AG (DAI) in a federal court in New York, charging it with having failed to honor supply contracts for parts essential for the production of key 2010 Chrysler vehicles.

Chrysler claimed that it would have to halt production of its 2010 model-year vehicles, Dodge Challenger, Charger, Chrysler 300 and Jeep Grand Cherokee models at its plants in Brampton, Ontario and Jefferson North in Detroit due to the disruption in the supply of components including steering columns and torque converters. The company will also have to idle workers and cease related orders from other suppliers.

The German automaker, Daimler believes that Chrysler’s claims have no merit. Daimler is willing to resolve the issues with Chrysler on new and modified supply agreements.

In 2007, Daimler had sold the wholly-owned Chrysler to a private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, retaining a 20% stake. However, Cerberus acquired the remaining stake just before Chrysler’s bankruptcy. Daimler has been supplying diesel engines, steering columns and torque converters to Chrysler under previously negotiated contracts.

The Chrysler group, which emerged from bankruptcy in June this year, is now managed by the Italian automaker Fiat SpA who bought most of Chrysler's assets. The remaining assets in bankruptcy are now referred to as Old Carco LLC.

Earlier this month, the creditors of Old Carco LLC have also filed a suit against Daimler claiming that it unlawfully stripped billions of dollars in assets from Chrysler before the sale to Cerberus.

Volcano Corporation (VOLC) has entered into a non-exclusive, global resale agreement with Siemens Healthcare, a division of Siemens AG (SI). Per the agreement, Siemens will resell Volcano's s5i IVUS/FFR systems and accessories along with its Artis family of x-ray systems.

Volcano's s5i is a component-based system that is incorporated directly into the catheterization lab, commonly known as the cath lab, thereby allowing intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and fractional flow reserve (FFR) systems to remain always ON and ready. The company's IVUS and FFR systems are compatible with Siemens' Artis x-ray offerings.

The new agreement appears to be a win-win for both companies. Volcano's top-line will be substantially benefited by the agreement with the global giant. Enbridge Gets Pipeline Permit – Analyst Blog

Last week, the Department of State issued a permit for Enbridge Inc. (ENB) to build the US portion of a cross-border pipeline. This project, called Alberta Clipper, will transfer crude oil from the tar sands area of Alberta, Canada to Midwestern US refineries.

However, four environmental organizations have vowed to legally challenge the decision as they argue that the pipeline will bring greenhouse-gas intensive oil sands crude from Canada, thereby contributing to global warming.

The company, together with its 12% owned master limited partnership Enbridge Energy Partners LP (EEP), is developing the $3.2 billion Alberta Clipper project. It involves construction of a 1000 mile, 36-inch diameter, heavy crude oil pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to Superior, Wisconsin, with an initial capacity of 450,000 barrels per day (Bbl/d), eventually expandable to 800,000 Bbl/d by adding pump and terminal stations.

Following receipt of the permit, Enbridge will immediately begin construction on the US leg of the project (approximately 330 miles of the new pipeline), expected to cost around $1.2 billion. The first part of the project (capacity of 450,000 Bbl/d) is expected to be in service by mid-2010.

General Motors has released a plan to increase output for the rest of 2009 to meet the demand generated by the recently introduced “Cash for Clunkers" program. “Cash for Clunkers" or the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) introduced by the U.S. Government last month, is a cash incentive program. The program allows consumers to trade in their fuel-inefficient vehicles for efficient ones for a value of up to $4,500.

Several automakers have increased production in response to the demand due to the program. Recently, Ford (F) has announced plans to scale up its fourth quarter output by 33% from a year earlier. Honda Motor Co. (HMC), Toyota Motors (TM), Hyundai Motor and Chrysler Group LLC have followed the lead as well.

GM revealed its plan to add 60,000 vehicles to its production schedule in the third and fourth quarters and bring back about 1,350 laid-off workers. The company targeted to produce 535,000 cars and trucks during July–September. This implied a 35% increase in output compared to the second quarter. The company plans to raise production in the final three months of the year by another 20%.

GM will also add shifts to factories in Ingersoll, Ontario and Lordstown, Ohio. The Ingersoll plant manufactures the new Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain crossover vehicles, both of which get 32 mpg on the highway. The Lordstown plant makes the Chevrolet Cobalt small car – the company’s highest-mileage car (37 mpg) – that was once among the top 10 on the "Cash for Clunkers" purchase list.

Production will also be pushed up at other North American factories. This includes models such as Chevrolet HHR small wagon, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups, the Chevrolet Camaro muscle car, Buick LaCrosse sedan and the Cadillac SRX and CTS Wagon.
