NY Times Beats Zacks Consensus – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 22nd, 2009) Writes:
Amid the secular and cyclical slowdown in print advertising The New York Times Company (NYT) recently reported third-quarter 2009 results that topped the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The New York Times quarterly earnings of 16 cents a share surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 2 cents, and the prior-year quarter earnings of 5 cents. The better-than-expected results came on the heels of significant cost-cutting measures and newspaper price increase. On a reported basis, including one-time items, the company reported a loss of 25 cents a share, a substantial improvement from the loss of 74 cents delivered in the year-ago quarter. Management now expects to save $475 million in operating costs in 2009 up from $450 million previously anticipated. Operating costs fell 21.6% to $490 million, whereas operating profit surged 30.2% to $80.6 million. Total revenue dipped 16.9% to $570.6 million, primarily due to lower print ...

‘New Reality’ for Newspaper Publishers Forces Search for New Revenue Streams to Tap Into

Contrarian Profits (September 21st, 2009) Writes:

As traditional print media continues its steep declines in advertising sales and circulation, publishers are struggling to come up with new and creative ways to generate revenue.

Ad revenues in the newspaper industry plunged 16.7% last year to $37.8 million r, according to the Newspaper Association of America (NAA). The 2009 take is estimated to fall another 17.3% to $31.6 billion according to Alan Mutter, a Silicon Valley executive who once lead the newsrooms of the Chicago Sun-Times and San Francisco Chronicle and now writes a blog titled “Reflections of a Newsosaur.”

Mutter’s estimate would put ad revenues at their lowest levels since 1965, when the industry took in $4.42 billion, or $30.22 billion when adjusted for inflation, the Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) reported.

While the worst economic downturn since World War II has eviscerated the fortunes of print media companies like The New York Times Co. (NYSE:

Boston Globe Not Shutting Down…Yet – Zacks Tale of the Tape

Zacks Market Commentaries (May 6th, 2009) Writes:

After a week of heated discussions, the New York Times Co. (NYT) finally negotiated a deal with Boston Globe's largest union on Wednesday that could avert closing of the 137-year old newspaper.

While exact terms of the agreement were not disclosed, news sources said it involved large pay cuts, unpaid layoffs and changes to the system of lifetime job guarantees that protect about 300 people in the Boston Newspaper Guild. This was the last of the seven unions involved in negotiations with the Times management and responsible for $10 million in concessions.

Like other newspapers, the Globe has also been hurt in recent times due to slumping advertising revenue and circulation figures as an increasing number of readers prefer the Internet over printed publications. With an expected loss of $85 million this year, the Times Co. threatened to shut down the paper within a month if

AOL Opens Chinese Website

Radio One on Same Frequency – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 5th, 2008) Writes:

Radio One, Inc. (ROIAK) is diversifying into businesses outside its core radio operations, which in the longer-term could offset the effects of radio’s secular decline. Together with Comcast (CMCSA), the company started the African-American cable TV network, TV One, which is expected to be cash-flow positive in the second half of 2008.

The company is also investing in online content and an Internet portal. With the recent sale of the Los Angeles and Miami stations, we expect ROIAK to acquire another 10% stake in TV One in 2009, and consolidate it, providing meaningful accretion. Near term, we expect revenue and earnings to trough in 2009 but have no visibility to renewed growth.

Meanwhile, in our view, the company’s high leverage may hinder its acquisition activities in the near future and thus, its attempts to diversify. Moreover, in a period of declining earnings and cash flow, Radio One is
