Statoil Slips, but Volumes up – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 6th, 2009) Writes:
Statoil ASA (STO) reported its third quarter results of 38 cents per share, compared to the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 40 cents and in line with the year-earlier quarter earnings. Revenue for the quarter was NOK 123.1 billion ($20.1 billion), down 29% year over year.  Though the company’s results were hurt by lower commodity prices, Statoil continues to maintain a high activity level both in Norway and internationally. Equity and entitlement productions were up 8% and 10% year over year, respectively, with the start-up of operations on several new oil and gas fields such as Tyrihans in the Norwegian Sea, Tune Sor in the North Sea and Thunder Hawk in the Gulf of Mexico.  Total oil and gas entitlement production during the quarter averaged 1.71 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (MMBOE/d), 62% of which was oil and 38% natural gas, compared to 1.55 MMBOE/d ...

Carry Trades Unwind…

Contrarian Profits (May 15th, 2009) Writes:

Carry trades unwind…Euro zone GDP falls…Will TIC flows be enough?? Aussie dollar predicted to outperform…And Now…Today’s Pfennig! Good day…The currency markets fell back into their established routine also, as fear drove investors out of riskier assets and back into the US$. We saw a general reversal of the carry trade, with the Japanese yen the only major currency which appreciated vs. the US$. As Chuck pointed out last week, investors feeling more confident about the global economy, dusted off their carry trades which had made them good money over the past few years. But traders are still a bit skittish, and move back out of these leveraged trades at the first sign of trouble in the global economy.

Europe delivered the bad news overnight with the released of first quarter GDP in the 16 member euro region. Gross domestic product fell 2.5% from the fourth quarter, when it fell 1.6% according

NOK Market Share to Fall in Q3 – Zacks Tale of the Tape

James Giaquinto (September 5th, 2008) Writes:
Nokia (NOK) shares fell on Friday after the world’s leading maker of mobile phones announced that its mobile device market share will decline in the third quarter compared to the second quarter.

Previously, the company expected its share to be about even with that of the previous quarter.

NOK attributed the lower-than-expected market share to its decision not to match aggressive pricing of competitors, as well as market competition and the temporary impact of a slower ramp-up of a mid-range device.

Nevertheless, the company continues to believe its product portfolio will be very attractive for the rest of this year due to its new products and services.

Shares of NOK were down approximately 8.4% this afternoon.

The company is a Zacks #3 Rank. It will be interesting to watch how this news concerning NOK’s third quarter will impact analysts’ earnings estimates in the coming days.

US/NOK Impressions

Keith Lenger (June 12th, 2008) Writes:
I happen to spend my summers in Norway. I was quite amazed at the amount of negative response received from European posters on the ECB post. I still believe the ECB is making a mistake. Granted, the ECB is dealing with a host of issues the FED does not have, such as, semi-rigid labor markets. I still believe the ECB’s target and potential slavish adherence with keeping to an inflation target will cause a lot of unnecessary pain to the Euro zone. Yes, I am in the “this inflation is transitory” camp. However, the last few days have seen an orchestrated move in several central bank policies. Most notably, the ECB is telegraphing the potential to raise its rates. The Bank of Canada did not cut rates. India has raised rates. China is making moves to drain liquidity from its system. ...
