Today in Russian Business – Oct 19, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (October 19th, 2009) Writes:
In a case brought to light by Hermitage Capital Management's campaign to expose state corruption in Russia, Viktor Markelov has pleaded guilty to 'fraud by prior collusion by a group of persons and in an especially large amount' in a Moscow court.  Hermitage, meanwhile, has sent out a new letter to six government agencies alleging that senior Kremlin officials have 'conspired with a private gang' to steal $230 million from the Russian treasury.  Bloomberg and The Times of London report the figure as $381 million, the Moscow Times as less than a quarter of that sum.  AvtoVAZ workers are rallying for the company's nationalization.  Swiss engineering firm ABB says it is reassessing its business model in Russia, owing to increased operating costs.  Is Russian oligarch Mikhail D. Enbridge Signs GoM Pipeline Deal – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 7th, 2009) Writes:

Calgary-based Enbridge Inc. (ENB) recently announced that it reached an agreement with subsidiaries of U.S. oil major Chevron Corp. (CVX), Norway’s StatoilHydro ASA (STO) and Japan’s Marubeni Corp. to construct and operate a 40-mile, 20-inch oil pipeline from the proposed Big Foot ultra deepwater development in the Gulf of Mexico.   The planned conduit is estimated to cost approximately $250 million and will transport about 100,000 barrels of oil per day to a subsea connection on existing deepwater pipeline infrastructure. It will be located approximately 170 miles south of the Louisiana coast and reach depths of up to 5,900 feet below water.   The proposed Big Foot pipeline will complement Enbridge’s previously announced plans to build the Walker Ridge offshore natural gas pipeline in the area for $500 million. Thus the company has committed a total of $750 million in pipelines to service oil and gas exploration

Enbridge Gets Pipeline Permit – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 26th, 2009) Writes:
Last week, the Department of State issued a permit for Enbridge Inc. (ENB) to build the US portion of a cross-border pipeline. This project, called Alberta Clipper, will transfer crude oil from the tar sands area of Alberta, Canada to Midwestern US refineries.

However, four environmental organizations have vowed to legally challenge the decision as they argue that the pipeline will bring greenhouse-gas intensive oil sands crude from Canada, thereby contributing to global warming.

The company, together with its 12% owned master limited partnership Enbridge Energy Partners LP (EEP), is developing the $3.2 billion Alberta Clipper project. It involves construction of a 1000 mile, 36-inch diameter, heavy crude oil pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta to Superior, Wisconsin, with an initial capacity of 450,000 barrels per day (Bbl/d), eventually expandable to 800,000 Bbl/d by adding pump and terminal stations.

Following receipt of the permit, Enbridge will immediately begin construction

Ford Sales Preview Set to Lift Market

Contrarian Profits (August 3rd, 2009) Writes:

U.S. stocks headed for a higher open on Monday as solid results from major European banks and expectations of a sales rebound for Ford Motor Co reinforced hopes that the recession is moderating.

Shares of Ford were up 7 percent at $8.58 before the bell after senior company executives said the automaker was on track to post its first monthly sales increase in two years.

In banking news, Barclays PLC reported an 8 percent rise in half-year profit, while HSBC Holdings PLC said its first-half profit halved from a year ago, but the results were better than the analyst consensus forecast.

“The greatest difficulty has been in financials, so the gains in HSBC and Barclays (are) adding to optimism and (suggest) that the worst may be over,” said Andre Bakhos, president of Princeton Financial Group, in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

“It’s comforting to see that we are in a global rebound in earnings.”

Greg Reid: Geothermal – The “Sleeping Giant”

The Energy Report (April 16th, 2009) Writes:

With the U.S. stimulus package in place and the politically contentious cap-and-trade program looming, one sector is poised to benefit from both measures. Calling it the “Rodney Dangerfield” of renewable energies, Greg Reid, director of Clean Technology at Wellington West Capital Markets, says geothermal doesn’t get a lot of respect right now—but that’s about to change. In this exclusive interview with The Energy Report, Greg discusses how the political push, and monetary allocation, for clean energy are aligning the political and social stars over geothermal.

The Energy Report: Greg, in one of your articles, you call geothermal the “sleeping giant” of renewable energy. What makes geothermal so interesting to you?

Greg Reid: I think the political and social stars are starting to align here. One of the key things is political will. You now have the governments that are pushing renewable energy. There was a lot of concern that as …

Zinc to Shine from 2-year Doldrums: featuring Donner Metals – John Lee

John Lee (October 20th, 2008) Writes:
History of Zinc (from International Zinc Association, (http://www.iza.com/uses.html) Centuries before zinc was discovered in the metallic form, its ores were used for making brass and zinc compounds, its ores were used for healing wounds and sore eyes. It is believed that the Romans first made brass in the time of Augustus (20 B.C. - 14 A.D.). In the 13th century Marco Polo described the manufacture of zinc oxide in Persia. At Zawar, India, both zinc metal and zinc oxide were produced from the 12th to the 16th century. From India, zinc manufacturing moved to China in the 17th century where it developed as an industry to supply the needs of the brass industry. In 1743, the first European zinc smelter was established in Bristol in the United Kingdom. A major technological improvement was achieved in Germany which led to the erection of ...

Remember Potash Corp. (POT), the Perfect Stock

Steve Reeves (September 5th, 2008) Writes:
We called Potash Corp. (NYSE:POT) the perfect stock back in March, when it was under $150 then ran all the way up to $241 a share.  Today, shares of POT are right back to $150 level and despite the haters, they are still one of the few companies that raised their 2008 and 2009 guidance. Morgan Stanley is out with a very positive Fertilizer call for Potash, saying they think the business model meltdown implied in fertilizer equities’ recent ~35% decline will prove unfounded. Firm believes that peak earnings are likely to come in 2011 (rather than in 2008, as implied by the ...
