Not that it mattered; markets have taken this as a positive and pushed an early 3% gain. WFC gapped well over resistance and although down from its open is nicely positioned to challenge $21.45 resistance. br /br /a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WWGUfU1tOjI/Sd4GNBweWEI/AAAAAAAAAzo/FdDhna-wMcc/s1600-h/WFCApr9.png"img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 176px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WWGUfU1tOjI/Sd4GNBweWEI/AAAAAAAAAzo/FdDhna-wMcc/s320/WFCApr9.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322698630478321730" //a br /span class="fullpost"Ignoring the 66% of Nasdaq stocks trading above their 50-day MA which suggests an intermediate top marking a 3-6 month high is imminent (bear market tops typically occur when 60% or more of stocks trade above this average), there is a nice play at work in the semiconductor ETF. The past 4-months of consolidation looks to be history and there should be good demand on any drop below $19.30. Next resistance around $21.10. I've made a whimsical call for a push to resistance with a stop below $19.30; a href="http://www.zignals.com/main/register.aspx"register to make YourCall/a. br /br /a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_WWGUfU1tOjI/Sd4KqpBJQII/AAAAAAAAAzw/HP7KznP1F_Y/s1600-h/SMH+Apr+9.png"img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 176px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_WWGUfU1tOjI/Sd4KqpBJQII/AAAAAAAAAzw/HP7KznP1F_Y/s320/SMH+Apr+9.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322703537279942786" //abr /span style="font-size:80%; color:#cccccc;"Dr. Declan Fallon, Senior Market Technician, a href="http://www.zignals.com"Zignals.com/a the free stock alerts, market alerts, and stock charts website /span/spandiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='http://res1.blogblog.com/tracker/3415040392614486358-3248709639294885409?l=zignalsblog.blogspot.com'//div

pVolume was paper thin yesterday, so it wasn#8217;t difficult for anyone who wanted to, to bend the metal prices to their will. I expect this trading pattern to continue for the balance of the year as the Western world (such as it is) heads into the holiday season.
According to the World Bank, the global carbon-trading market was valued around $64 billion last year.

NASDAQ announced today that it is jumping into the emission trading markets, through the acquisition of businesses from the Norwegian power exchange, Nord Pool.

NASDAQ said it will create a commodities unit under the NASDAQ OMX brand through the acquisition.

Increasing interest in emissions trading globally has led to the development of several emissions-trading platforms, emissions-based indexes and index investments, including exchange-traded products.

At least initially, however, NASDAQ has said that trading will be in over-the-counter contracts, not exchange-traded products, for its new emissions platform.

Earlier this year, as part of a broad commodities-themed ETN introduction, Barclays launched an exchange-traded note tracking the carbon market, the iPath Global Carbon ETN (see story here.)

The emissions trading consultant, PointCarbon, has predicted that carbon could become the world's largest commodity.

Merrill Lynch, HSBC, UBS and Dow Jones, in conjunction with the Chicago Climate Exchange, have all launched indexes tracking global emissions, and carbon specifically.

There are several broad-based clean energy ETFs in the market, from PowerShares Wilder Hill Clean Energy (NYSEArca: PBW) and PowerShares Global Clean Energy (PBD), to Market Vectors Global Alternative Energy (NYSEArca: GEX).

According to the World Bank, the global carbon-trading market was valued around $64 billion last year.

Recent Acquisitions

Movement into the emissions market by major U.S. exchanges has been driven by recent acquisition activity. CME Group acquired the Green Exchange in August, as a by-product of its purchase of NYMEX Holdings. NASDAQ OMX acquired Nord Pool's clearing and consultancy businesses as part of the purchase of OMX AB earlier this year.

In terms of performance and investor interest, the iPath carbon ETN (NYSEArca: GRN), only has $7 million in assets, through Oct. 21, according to Morningstar data.

However, the ETN did launch shortly before the larger problems in the credit markets surfaced and drove investors away from ETNs and their unsecured credit profile, more generally. GRN is down 13.05% in the past 3 months, according to Morningstar, which is a little more than half of the loss suffered by the Standard & Poor's 500 Index in the same time period (23.77%).

The broader clean energy plays tied to global stocks, have been beaten up much worse than the carbon ETN, but they have been much more successful in terms of asset gathering.

PBD is down 48% in the past three months; trailing the S&P 500 by a wide margin. PBW is down 45.73% over the past three months, and GEX also down in the same range, 45.14%. PBW has $1 billion in assets, compared with GEX at $309 million, and PBD, at $178 million.

The closest thing to an ETF market in the Middle East at this
point is Turkey, where there are five ETFs from two asset managers

Abu
Dhabi, the major Middle East financial center, says it's preparing to create a platform to launch
exchange-traded funds.

In detailing plans on Thursday, Rashed Al Baloushi, the deputy chief executive of the Abu Dhabi Exchange
(ADX), credits increasing ETF demand by retail and institutional
investors in the Middle East for the exchange's decision to build an ETF-specific platform.

Across
the Middle East, ETFs and other traded securities are proving more popular and
catching the attention of exchanges. The Dubai International Financial Exchange
(DIFX), as well as exchanges in Oman and Saudi Arabia, have also shown interest
in adding ETFs.

The latest ETF plans are also part of ambitious efforts by many Middle
East markets to diversify away from oil wealth and become true, global
financial centers.

Earlier this year, the Abu Dhabi Securities Market signed a
joint venture deal with NYSE Euronext. The United Arab Emirates' Borse Dubai
and the Qatar Financial Authority bought large stakes in the London Stock
Exchange last year, and DIFX inked a strategic deal with NASDAQ to develop its
regional platform.

The
Egyptian Stock Exchange has said it plans to list ETFs, stock and index futures
and options, in the next year, and a major Egyptian bank already has plans to
list an ETF on the primary Egyptian stock index (see story here.)

Baloushi made his comments while speaking at a brokerage conference in Abu
Dhabi. ADX has been working with ETF consultants to
study the success of ETFs in other global markets.

Across the globe, net sales of ETFs have been rising as net assets in
traditional mutual funds have decreased. In Europe, for example, net sales into
ETFs were $43 billion through the first seven months of the year, while
traditional funds had outflows of $148.6 billion, according to Barclays Global
Investors data.

The closest thing to an ETF market in the Middle East, at this
point, is Turkey, where there are five ETFs from two asset managers,
according to BGI.

A reader left a question that I think is pretty damn good. He asked "what are the variables that I use that allow you to do a forward analysis of an asset with any meaningful probability of being right."

As someone who believes in top down management I focus on big picture issues and then try to figure the best way to invest toward the big picture while at the same time building in some sort of counter strategy in case my assessment is wrong.

So instead of looking at a stock from the bottom up and saying ok, here is a stock with such and such valuations that will make more widgets next year for a slightly smaller cost and buying it, top down looks at the world for things like supply and demand issues, turning points in cycles or big long-lasting themes as examples. The world is not going to have enough drinking water, the US had an unsustainable real estate price boom built on very low rates or China is going to be much more globally relevant over the next decade.

Another type of analysis might be at the sector level. Take a couple of years ago when the curve inverted. The history of curve inversions is bad. Is there any reason why this might be different? Are the arguments made by the people saying it's different this time compelling? Based on a bunch of excesses we all knew about, even if we could not quantify, no, those arguments were not compelling.

The best way I could describe the above is that I am trying to put the odds in my favor as often as I can by trying to find the forest. This is far more important than the stocks, or funds, that are ultimately chosen to capture the big themes.

Before the financial sector blow up I used to say, as an example, the best thing would have been to sell all tech in the summer of 2000 as opposed to trying to find the one or two names that might have gone up as the Nasdaq dropped 80%. Now the financial sector is another example. The best thing would have been to sell all financials instead of trying to find one or two that might to do well.

Once you know that things look good for the oil market (using an example from a couple of years ago that shows how simple this can be) what then is the best way to capture this effect taking into account a good balance of potential price appreciation and volatility? Over the last five years it would be very difficult to pick a stock that went down, save for maybe Yukos. Clearly some energy stocks have been relative laggards or leaders but if you got oil right one way or another you probably have a winner on your hands.

For me the energy theme meant looking at foreign stocks because every country has a big oil company, this is an easy sector to add foreign exposure. Having done a little reading I knew that Norway was (and obviously still is) an important destination for oil.

There aren't too many big oil companies in Norway. If oil up is good for Norway it must be good for Statoil (STO) was the thinking. I could have been wrong of course but the wind was at my back when I bought it. Obviously I still had to learn the company. Norway's production is declining, the company is very unhedged, they have a big global footprint and I had to learn the numbers but it would have been hard for that stock to have been a horrible pick.

I think this is all very simple, you either see it that way or not but sorting out the big themes and then looking for the best way in is the best description I can give.

Another reader left a comment that included the following;

Diversify. Eat right. Have friends. Work out. <strike>Buy</strike> Adopt a dog.

Pretty hard to argue with that. If you can't really eat right how about just cutting out the soda?

A common question I receive is if I am aware of a reputable company which allows electronic trading of the traditional commodities such as Oil, Grains, Meats, Metals, and also Index futures such as S&P's, Dow, Nasdaq, and Russell.

At the trade show in Ontario, CA last week I met with Mark Monaco, who is the Head of sales for Prime Investments LLC and also Ehedger, both Introducing Brokers at the Chicago Board of Trade in Chicago, Illinois. I used to work with Mark and know him to be a good man and an excellent trader. Mark showed me his company's trading platform and told me about his company's background of 40 years trading at the CBOT and expertise in trading grains as his company's owners are third generation corn and soybean farmers in Northern Illinois, they not only understand the technicals of trading, but also are very close to the fundamentals. I am convinced that if you are interested in this area of trading for a portion of your capital, you should check them out. Mark can be reached at 312-786-4188. The company caters to SPECULATIVE ACCOUNTS and Commercial AG traders

On Friday KongZhong Corporation (NASDAQ:KONG) shares fell 11% and finished the day $1 above their 52-week low. Now that KONG has fallen, it sits defeated at $4.59 a share after Q1 profit fell a dreadful 94%. Is there any hope for this beat up stock?

Although not of immediate concern, some of the bullish percents are about to enter bear market (but not bull market) top territory. If January lows represent the start of a bear market then these breadth indicators should top soon. If the current rally is a continuation of the cyclical bull market then there is room for another 15-20% of gain (perhaps as much as 50% for the Nasdaq Bullish Percents).

How this impacts on the market remains to be seen, but the likely outcome would be a negative divergence between breadth indicators and the market; indices make new highs as bullish percents fall. Time will tell.

I'm traveling to D.C. so there will be no update tomorrow.
