Three Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Space Shuttle Main Engines (SSME) successfully powered the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery on Mission STS-128 to deliver extra supplies and equipment to support a six-person crew onboard the International Space Station. The SSME is the world's only fully reusable high performance rocket engine rated for human space flight. Discovery was launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center on 30th August. Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (UTX).

Discovery's main payload is the Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics Module, which is carrying extra supplies and equipment to help establish a six-astronaut crew capacity on the space station. The payload includes science and storage racks, a treadmill and a crew quarter.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems Co., a Lockheed Martin Corp. (LMT) subsidiary, recently set up a new Missile Defense Systems operating unit. The new unit, which is part of the Lockheed Martin's Strategic and Missile Defense Systems division, includes program management, engineering and production facilities in Huntsville and Courtland, Alabama, and program operations in Denver, Colorado, and Sunnyvale, California. Retired Army Major General John W. Holly will head the unit.

The new operating unit will provide support to Lockheed Martin's various projects. These  include the tri-national medium extended air defense system (MEADS) program led by Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, the land environment air picture provision (LEAPP) air defense program led by Lockheed Martin U.K  and the targets and countermeasures program of the Missile Defense Agency. Lockheed Martin reported 13% lower EPS over the year-ago quarter. While Lockheed was swept away by pension blues, Raytheon gained $11 million during the quarter from pension adjustments. Operating income fell marginally year-over-year (1.9%) in the Integrated Defense Systems (IDS) and Missile Systems (MS, 7%) segments.
