Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) reported a strong quarter at the end of October on the back of resurgent demand in the PC market. But the key issue to watch is the important transition in the company’s major technologies.

Microsoft just launched its very successful Windows 7 operating system, which has produced a major new upgrade cycle in the industry. In England, for example, Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN) had more success selling Windows 7 packages than it did Harry Potter books.  Windows 7 has major advantages over Vista, including speed, simplicity and booting time.  This is prompting Vista users, as well as those who skipped Vista, to upgrade.

Telecom Argentina (TEO) reported third-quarter earnings per ADS of 40 cents, falling short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 52 cents. However, reported net income from continuing operations grew 39% year over year to P$303 million (US$79 million), boosted by healthy growth from broadband and mobile segments.   Consolidated revenues increased 13% year over year to P$3.1 billion (US$803 million) as the company’s cellular business grew 13% while broadband business (Arnet) posted healthier annualized growth of 54%. Newport Digital Technologies Inc. recently announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with Microsoft to develop RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Technology) related applications for its Windows Mobile platform, utilizing the MS Windows Mobile operating system. A Seoul Central District Court ruling went against Microsoft (MSFT) on Friday. The court held that Microsoft’s bundling of the Windows Media Service with its Windows operating system amounted to unfair competition. It was felt that consumers should be allowed to make their own choice, which would, in turn, promote healthy competition among the providers.   Although the ruling went against Microsoft, the court set aside damage claims by local software company Dideonet, which initiated the proceedings.
