Las Vegas Sands (LVS) Macau unit, Sand China raised $2.5 billion through its Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO). The company has priced the IPO for 1.87 billion shares at HK$10.38 per share, the low end of the expected HK$10.38-HK$13.88 range.

The proceeds from this offering, combined with $1.75 billion in bank financing, would aid Sands China to restart its Macau's Cotai Strip construction projects. Last year, the company was forced to halt its casino expansion projects in Macau due to financial constraints, at which time it laid off 11,000 workers.

The IPO is being handled by five investment banks. Citigroup (C) and Goldman Sachs (GS) are the joint global coordinators for the offer while Barclays PLC (BCS), BNP Paribas SA and UBS AG (UBS) are the underwriters.

Earlier, in October, rival company Wynn Resorts (WYNN) had held its IPO for its Macau assets. Wynn Macau has experienced a strong debut in the Hong Kong stock exchange. Wynn sold 1.25 billion shares or a 25% stake in its Macau business. However, the shares of Wynn Macau are now trading at a discount to the offering price.

Macau is the only Chinese city where gambling is legal. It has become an attractive destination for casino companies such as Las Vegas Sands, Wynn Resorts and MGM Mirage (MGM), which are investing billions for expansion on this island. Macau has survived the economic downturn relatively well.

Macau has generated HK$105.6 billion ($13.5 billion) of gross gaming revenue in 2008, more than double the revenue generated by the Las Vegas strip. Also, visa restrictions had recently been slackened by Beijing to allow mainland tourists to visit Macau once a month rather than twice a year.

The capital bolstering initiatives augur well for Las Vegas Sands, which has a robust development pipeline, with projects in Macau, Las Vegas, Singapore and Pennsylvania.
Read the full analyst report on "LVS"
Read the full analyst report on "MGM"
Read the full analyst report on "WYNN"
Read the full analyst report on "C"
Read the full analyst report on "GS"
Read the full analyst report on "BCS"
Read the full analyst report on "UBS"
Zacks Investment Research

Las Vegas Sands Corporation (LVS) is planning for a Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO) for its Macau assets next month. The company intends to raise up to $2.5 billion through the IPO. The offering is intended to complete in about four weeks after receiving regulatory approval for offering and listing.

In September, Las Vegas announced the infusion of up to $600 million of capital through the sale of exchangeable bonds to strengthen up its balance sheet. The bonds will be compulsorily exchanged into common stock of its Macau unit after the unit's pending IPO on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

Rival company Wynn Resorts (WYNN) held its IPO for its Macau assets earlier in October. Wynn Macau has experienced a strong debut in the Hong Kong stock exchange. Wynn sold 1.25 billion shares or a 25% stake in its Macau business, which represented Hong Kong's second-biggest IPO of the year.

Other rivals -- MGM Mirage (MGM) and its Macau, China, casino partner, businesswoman/tycoon Pansy Ho -- are also planning to expand their casino operations in Macau and are contemplating an IPO as well.

Macau has become an attractive destination for casino companies such as Las Vegas Sands, Wynn Resorts and MGM, who are investing billions for expansion on this island. Macau has survived the economic downturn relatively well. It has generated HK$105.6 billion ($13.5 billion) of gross gaming revenue in 2008, more than double the revenue generated by the Las Vegas strip. Also, visa restrictions had recently been lessened by Beijing to allow mainland tourists to visit Macau once a month rather than twice a year.

However, recently, government officials of Macau met with six major casino operators and concluded that limitless expansion of the Macau gambling sector may be harmful to the society. Significant expansion of the gambling business in Macau has encouraged corruption, addiction and prostitution in that area.

The government is considering regulations like raising the entry age limit for casinos to 21 years from 18 years, limiting the number of tables per casino and modifying zoning laws to compel slot machine halls away from residential areas and into commercial zones.

We think that such regulations will pose a threat to casino operators in Macau, though oversupply may be limited in the region. Pending further development, we continue to hold a Neutral recommendation on the shares of Las Vegas Sands, Wynn Resorts and MGM Mirage.
Read the full analyst report on "LVS"
Read the full analyst report on "WYNN"
Read the full analyst report on "MGM"
Zacks Investment Research

Macau Casino Growth Threatened?

The explosive growth of the casino industry in Macau may be threatened as the government of Macau − the Chinese gambling Mecca − is considering ways to impose restrictions on age, number of tables and locations of casinos.

Yesterday, government officials of Macau met with six major casino operators including Las Vegas Sands (LVS) and Wynn Resorts Ltd. (WYNN) and a casino jointly operated by MGM Mirage (MGM) and local businesswoman/tycoon Pansy Ho, concluding that limitless expansion of the Macau gambling sector may be harmful to the society.
Advance Auto Targets E-Commerce

Advance Auto Parts (AAP) has launched its own e-commerce website, AdvanceAutoParts.com, to sell its products online for the first time since its dissolution with Phoenix-based auto retailer CSK Auto during the first quarter of 2009. The website will allow customers to purchase more than 100,000 parts and accessories. It will also allow free shipping on purchases of $75 or more as well as free in-store pickup.

The Roanoke, VA-based auto retailer previously operated a similar website called PartsAmerica.com in partnership with CSK Auto. However, it had to close down the website after CSK was acquired by Springfield, MO-based auto retailer O’Reilly Automotive (ORLY). At that time, Advance Auto only operated an online merchandise lookup feature.

In 2007, Advance Auto targeted e-commerce as a potential growth channel. The company now aims to take it to the next level. Last month, the company opened an e-commerce office in Campbell, CA, near Silicon Valley. The headcount in the office (currently constituting 20 employees) will be doubled as the company ramps up the new website.

MGM Mirage (MGM) has offered to exchange a part of its $782 million 8.5% senior notes due next year for up to $500 million of 10.00% Senior Notes due 2016. This swapping would harness liquidity and also allow the company to extend the time to repay its debt at the cost of a somewhat increased debt level and interest expenses.

The exchange offer will expire September 24, 2009, unless extended by MGM. For each $1,000 in principal amount of existing notes tendered and accepted, the holder will receive $1,175 principal amount of new notes, of which $50 in principal amount of New Notes represents early participation payment only to those who tender notes before the close of business on September 10, 2009.

Casino operator MGM Mirage has been severely impacted by the recession. The company reported a loss of $212 million in the second quarter as it incurred significant impairment charges.

However, the company has a strong pipeline of projects and has implemented several cost-control initiatives, which are expected to lead to its earning growth going forward. The company is now trying to expand in Asia and Middle East without investing in land and development, but as a franchisor.

MGM Mirage owns and operates 16 casinos in Nevada, Mississippi and Michigan and has a 50.0% interest in four other casino resorts. The company also operates luxury hotels in the Middle East and Asia.

MGM which is partly controlled by billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, has a diversified model which allows it to withstand weaker economic times relatively well. The company has international exposure coupled with its diversification within the U.S., which bodes well going forward. Also this swapping of senior notes provides the much needed short-term liquidity to the company though the debt level increases a bit.
Read the full analyst report on "MGM"
Zacks Investment Research

A government report that suggested the economy shrank at a slower pace than feared failed to push stocks higher on a lackluster Friday but indexes managed to end the month on a solid footing, spurred by hopes that the recession is losing its force. The big July saw the Dow Jones industrial average surging 725 points or 8.6% - its best July since 1989, and the broader S&P 500 index gaining 7.4% for its best July run since 1988. The S&P500 has now recorded its most remarkable five-month performance since 1938, holding 46% above its 12-year low set in early March.

This morning’s US stock futures indicate a sharply higher opening, helped by positive signs emanating from overseas markets. Today, Chinese stocks hit a 14-month high after data showed manufacturing activity is expanding in the country. The Shanghai Composite Index rose 50.53 points, or 1.5%, to close at 3,462.59 points and Hong Kong's Hang Seng index rose 223.93 points, or 1.1%, to 20,807.26. However, Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average bucked the trend, closing down 4.36 points, or about 0.1%.

On Friday, the Commerce Department said that U.S. gross domestic product – a measure of all the goods and services produced – contracted at a 1% annual rate last quarter, compared with economists’ expectations of a 1.5% contraction and markedly better than first quarter’s 6.4% pullback.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged up a paltry 17 points, or 0.2%; while the S&P 500 managed to end the day in positive territory. The tech-heavy NASDAQ, however, lost 0.3% to close the day at 1979. Of the 67% S&P500 companies that have reported their earnings so far, about 76% have exceeded Street estimates and only 14% have reported a miss. On the New York Stock Exchange, 1.52 billion shares exchanged hands as advancing issues beat declining stocks three to two.

Over the weekend, Treasury Secretary Geithner noted signs pointing to an economy starting to turn around, although echoing expectations that unemployment numbers may not begin to recover until the second half of 2010. Economist Nouriel Roubini advised, "There is now potentially light at the end of the tunnel," with previous Fed Chairman Greenspan concurring, as he also noted the recession may be ending.

Today's primary posts include vehicle sales for July, which are expected to have risen from the prior month to their highest since September, with analysts expecting car sales could even top a 12 million annual rate. Ford (NYSE:F) may show sales up from the previous year on the late-month surge in the government's successful "cash-for-clunkers" program. Key market-moving data this week could be ISM manufacturing, the service sector survey, consumer credit, personal spending, with Friday seeing the release of the month's non-farm payroll report.

Companies reporting their earnings today include: Humana (NYSE:HUM), Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO), MGM Mirage (NYSE:MGM), Tyson Foods (NYSE:TSN), Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC), Chesapeake Energy (NYSE:CHK), and Principal Financial Group (NYSE:PFG).
Zacks Investment Research

div style="text-align: justify;"Merrill Lynch is out downgrading span style="font-weight: bold;"MGM Mirage (NYSE:MGM)/span to Neutral from Buy while lowering their target to $8 (prev. $11).br /br /MGM has taken an increasingly aggressive strategy toward booking group business in late 2009, ’10 and ’11. While this helps to fill MGM’s huge 33.7K room inventory, it effectively locks in lower rates, meaning MGM’s earnings snap-back could be delayed. No signs of group volume recovery by the hotel companies, means pricing will remain challenged for at least the rest of ’09 and likely longer.br /br /span style="font-weight: bold;"Supply picture may not be improving as quickly as thought/spanbr /Merrill continues to believe supply risks from CityCenter cannibalization (6K rooms, +6% growth) are understood, but the Fontainebleau LV (4K rooms, +4% growth) bankruptcy in June and slow progress on Cosmopolitan (3 rooms, +3% growth) were incremental positives. Now, there are signs that Fontainebleau LV could be worked out and Cosmopolitan (appt’d a new CEO) could open late ‘10, meaning supply of an add’l 7K high end rooms (+7% growth) will continue into late ‘10/’11.br /br /span style="font-weight: bold;"Credit separation from equity a bad signal/spanbr /In the last run, MGM’s debt and equity moved in lock step, as reduced likelihood of bankruptcy was positive for both. This hasn’t been the case recently w/equity rallying 36% (vs. Samp;P 11%) but LT debt (Jan 17 7 5/8) narrowing slightly from 64.5 to 66.25. With $12B in debt and a quick profit snap-back in ’10/’11 less likely due to locked-in rates + supply, add’l dilution for equity holders is a continued risk.br /br /span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"Notablecalls:/span The call has some new info (negative) and will likely work. You can get some decent fills in the pre market and cover lower later in the day.br /br /MGM does not have any Macau assets to monetize so it's pretty much dying a slow death.br /br /Right now I'm interested if it can go sub-$7 or not. With a little help from the market I think it can./divdiv class="blogger-post-footer"img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/29297569-3750204165294699051?l=notablecalls.blogspot.com'//div

Shares of MGM Mirage Inc. (MGM) shot up a day after the casino giant said it no longer faced a bankruptcy concern.

As the global economic slump took the shine off the once thriving gambling industry in Las Vegas, MGM Mirage warned in March that there was "substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern" due to mounting debts. The stock had slumped below $2 at the height of bankruptcy concerns.

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn has been pressuring the company to restructure its $13.5 billion debt through bankruptcy protection.

In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission late on Tuesday, MGM Mirage said that the $2.6 billion it raised by selling debt and equity last month will enable it to retire its short-term debt that had given rise to the going concern clause.

This would certainly bring some relief to Kirk Kerkorian, who owns a majority stake in the beleaguered company. If MGM were to file for bankruptcy, secured debtholders would get priority over shareholders.

Shares of the company were up more than 13% to $6.64 at noon on the New York Stock Exchange after reaching as much as $6.83 earlier in the session. They are, however, still far from a 52-week high of $39.50.

"MGM" Free Stock Analysis: Buy?

After MGM Mirage (MGM) gained some breathing space by amending its senior credit facility, the casino giant said it would raise $2.5 billion through stock and bond offerings in order to pay down a chunk of its debt obligations.

The company, which is battling the biggest slowdown in the history of gambling in Las Vegas, said it would privately place $1.5 billion senior secured notes in the junk bond market and offer 81.0 million common shares for gross proceeds of about $1 billion.

The modifications made with its creditors will allow MGM to permanently waive potential defaults from the term "going concern" in its financial statements for fiscal years 2008 and 2009. The company was earlier handed a deadline of June 30 to formulate a restructuring plan that would help it stay afloat in the ongoing crisis.

The sale of the two-part senior secured bonds maturing in 2014 and 2017 is expected to help restructure MGM's debt load of more than $14 billion and provide some liquidity. The move from Kirk Kerkorian's dream project comes at a time when investors seeking high returns are showing their willingness to buy riskier bonds from lower-rated firms. All three major agencies have downgraded MGM's credit ratings repeatedly in the recent past due to its mounting debt.

"MGM" Free Stock Analysis: Buy?

The Economic Data Is Better, But...

We are seeing more and more encouraging data. Though definitely a positive, it's not enough to move me into the bull camp.

The Economy Is RELATIVELY Better

One of the indicators I follow regularly is the ISM manufacturing index. In terms of "real-time" economic data, it's about as close as we get.

Last month, the index reached its highest level since October. Though the survey still clearly suggests that the economy is contracting (April's reading was 40.1; scores above 50 imply expansion), the pace of contraction slowed notably. Equally important, key components, such as new orders and production, showed sizeable improvements from March.

April's job losses were the fewest in 7 months at 539,000. To put this number in perspective, nonfarm payrolls fell by an average of 700,000 per month between December and March.

Then there is Vegas, yes, that Vegas. The CEOs of MGM Mirage (MGM) and Boyd's Gaming (BYD) used terms like "sequential increases in occupancy levels" and "signs of stabilization". In layman's terms, business doesn't stink as much as it did during the first quarter.

Though casino hotel bookings are not what I would hinge my economic forecast on, combined with other data, they are a positive sign.

Keep in mind, however, that we are not out of the woods. The economy is still going downhill. However, the rate of deterioration is clearly slowing and that's a big positive.

Earnings Estimates Are Also Looking Better

Brokerage analysts are far more optimistic right now than they were 3 months ago.

During the past 4 weeks, 5,120 full-year earnings estimates have been revised upwards. Three months ago, just 2,152 estimates were revised higher. That's a 250% improvement.

Before you get too excited, understand that negative revisions still outnumber positive revisions (6,655 versus 5,120). Nonetheless, the revisions ratio (positive revisions divided by negative revisions) has improved for 16 out of the last 20 weeks.

Again, we're not out of the woods, but there is definitely some sunlight shining through.

Why I Remain Cautious

I've been bearish about the markets and think we could see a pullback in stock prices. There are a few reasons why.

First, April was not nearly as good as the bulls made it to be. Yes, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($DJI) surged 5.5% during the first half of the month. But, in the second half, momentum slowed with the average rising just 1.7%.

Even then, the statistics don't tell the whole story. From the Apr 16 close to the Apr 30 close, the Dow gained a mere 43 points, or 0.5%.

That's a big difference in return for someone who bought the Dow Diamonds ETF (DIA) on Apr 16 instead of just a couple of weeks earlier. (DIA is an ETF that tracks the performance of the Dow.)

Secondly, volume is not signaling a lot of conviction on the part of buyers. Throughout March, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY) experienced average volume of 400 million shares per day. In April, daily volume declined to 287 million shares.

Yet, during this entire time, stocks have risen. And the higher they go, the more the rally is losing steam. That's not good.

Thirdly, I'm worried about the banks.

Yes, everyone passed the stress test, but it was a questionable test to begin with. Plus, Bank of America (BAC) and 9 others have lots of time to raise funds. But, foreclosures are still rising, credit card defaults will get worse and, despite all of the analysis, nobody still knows how to value the toxic assets.

The government might keep the large banks afloat, but their stock prices and earnings could still suffer. And that alone would cause problems for the stock market. Not to mention that financial stocks (and related ETFs such as Financial Select Sector SPDR (XLF)) are overdue for a pullback based on technical analysis alone.

Fourthly, as earnings season comes to an end, we should see fewer positive revisions to profit forecasts. The ratio of positive to negative revisions typically falls after earnings season, even during good times. I don't see any reason for this to change.

A drop in positive revisions would be one less catalyst for stocks to go higher.

Finally, the General Motors (GM) situation remains unresolved. If bankruptcy proceedings turn messy, it will cause a big disruption across the entire automotive industry. This, in turn, could create problems for the market.

Be A Buyer, But A Cautious One

The improvement in the data is significant and should not be ignored. If you've been sitting on the sidelines, start looking at stocks closely.

What I wouldn't do, however, is take unnecessary risks. Rather, look for industries with strong signs that business conditions are improving, such as rising earnings estimates on several companies.

And don't be afraid to dollar-cost average. You still have plenty of time to gradually build new positions.

On the other hand, if you have large gains in risky stocks that you bought in March, consider Bernard M. Baruch's infamous advice, "Nobody ever lost money taking a profit."

Wishing you prosperity,
(F) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ).

The U.S. shed just 539,000 jobs last month, the fewest since last October. Unemployment continued to rise, however, reaching 8.9%.

The nonfarm payroll drop was well below even better than most of the more optimistic forecasts, thought the ADP survey did signal that a positive surprise could occur. More importantly, it is another sign that the pace of economic deterioration is slowing.

Not all was encouraging, however. The unemployment rate is at its highest level since September 1983. Furthermore, the March job loss number was revised upwards to 699,000, from the previous estimate of 633,000.

The government hired 72,000 workers. Conversely, the manufacturing sector shed 149,000 jobs and the service sector cut 269,000 jobs.

Though the recession will get worse before it gets better, the eye of the economic storm appears to have passed. Today's numbers were the latest in a series of improving data points and follow yesterday's encouraging numbers from the retailers and optimistic comments made earlier in the week from the CEOs of MGM Mirage (MGM) and Cisco Systems (CSCO).

Investors now need to balance increased exposure to stocks, while still using a high level of selectivity. Business conditions do appear to improving for companies such as Intel (INTC). On the other hand, the recent run in shares of Regions Financial (RF) and Ford Motor (F) seem to ignore the ongoing challenges. At the same time, more stable companies such as Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) continue to thrive, but have stocks prices that reflect attractive valuations.

It's still not time to be overly aggressive, however. Stocks have had a strong run over the past 2 months and are now overbought. Additionally, volume has been falling since March. Therefore, a short-term pullback seems likely. If a pullback does occur, it would be a buying opportunity.

In the meantime, give consideration to using a dollar-cost averaging strategy to get back into the stock market.

I titled my blog post about today's employment data Eye of the Storm Has Passed. For someone who has been bearish, this might come across as surprisingly bullish, but it's just not that simple.

The economy is clearly showing a relative improvement. Take a look at the data we've seen over the past week or so. The ISM manufacturing index is at its highest level since last October. April's job loss estimate was the lowest in 7 months. Cisco System's (CSCO) CEO, John Chambers, said customers are "seeing some stabilization". MGM Mirage's (MGM) CEO, Jim Murren, observed a "sequential increases in occupancy levels" at his properties.

However, the economy is still going downhill. Manufacturing continues to contract and the unemployment rate is at its highest level since 1983. It's just that the pace of economic deterioration is slowing. A positive sign, but still a long way from actual growth.

Ahead of these improving signs has been a strong rally in stock prices. Volume has been tapering off, meaning that the buyers are losing conviction. And now we are looking at fewer catalysts to push stocks higher.

As earnings season comes to an end, the number of positive revisions will drop. Also, the results of the stress tests have been released.

What's left? 10 banks need to raise capital, which could dilute current shareholders. General Motors (GM) needs to reach a resolution with its debt holders and its unions. A messy bankruptcy would be disruptive to the entire automotive sector.

The economic data could provide some fuel for the bulls, but given the extent of the rally and the fact that we know there is some improvement, the data had better really good. Right now, I'm not sure that it will be good enough.

So where does that leave us? I'm expecting a pullback, but remain hopeful for a prolonged trading range.

Portfolio Updates

Digital Fast Channel (DGIT) missed both revenue and profit expectations. I don't like selling stocks quickly, but this was a case where the most prudent move was to close the position as fast as possible.

We made 2 additions to the Growth & Income portfolio this week, IBM (IBM) and Yum Brands (YUM). We think IBM could benefit from the eventual economic recovery, like its global reach and view the dividend as being very safe. YUM gives us exposure to China. Plus, the company had strong first-quarter results.

To make room for YUM, we sold McDonald's (MCD) from the Growth & Income portfolio. We wanted to add YUM, but did not want 2 fast food companies in the same portfolio. Plus, the move ends the overlap we had between the Growth & Income portfolio and the Focus List.

Western Digital (WDC) was added back to the Focus List. Some of you might remember that we sold the stock last October. At the time, guidance was being cut. Now, earnings estimates are starting to rise again. The valuation is cheap.

The additions of both IBM and WDC also play into what I talked about last week: traders' risk tolerances are rising. Therefore, we are looking for ways to get more aggressive without venturing onto thin ice.

The Markets

As I write this near lunchtime on Friday, the stock markets are rallying. A positive reaction to the stress test results and the employment numbers laid the groundwork for higher prices. As stated above, my concern is that the rally has gotten too long in the tooth.

We'll see if positive earnings surprises from retailers next week give the rally one last boost or if a "sell on the news" scenario develops.

by David Fessler, Advisory Panelist
Casino stocks have been more than down on their luck lately. In fact, they’ve been on the ropes more than one of their prizefighting boxers. And it’s no wonder.
The recession has hit consumers hard. And many have cut their spending, [...]

For Immediate Release

Chicago, IL - May 7, 2009 - Zacks.com releases the latest Zacks Industry Rank. Stocks featured in this week’s analysis include Ameristar Casinos (ASCA), Boyd Gaming (BYD), Monarch Casino & Resort (MCRI), MGM Mirage (MGM), Penn National Gaming (PENN), Pinnacle Entertainment (PNK) and Williams Industries (WMS).

Zacks Industry Rank Analysis is written by Charles Rotblut, CFA, Senior Market Analyst for Zacks.com.

What Are Bank Stocks Really Worth?

Shares of MGM Mirage (MGM) soared nearly 37% yesterday after saying business conditions were starting to improve.

"Our resorts have seen sequential increases in occupancy levels through the first quarter and into April, and our forward booking pace is improving. This is allowing us the opportunity to better yield our room pricing," Chairman and CEO Jim Murren revealed.

This morning, Boyd Gaming (BYD) echoed the message.

"We're encouraged by some positive trends that developed during the quarter. In our Las Vegas Locals region, we began to see signs of stabilization", stated CEO Keith Smith.

The optimistic comments followed positive surprises from several other casino operators, including Ameristar Casinos (ASCA), Monarch Casino & Resort (MCRI), Penn National Gaming (PENN), and Pinnacle Entertainment (PNK). Even gaming equipment maker Williams Industries (WMS) gave investors a reason to keep rolling the dice.

Marketing and Cost-Cutting Measures Paying Off

Revenues for most casino operators were down, as would be expected in the midst of a bad recession. A focus on marketing helped to limit the decline in gaming and lodging revenues, however.

For example, PENN credited "revenue enhancement" strategies by its managers for keeping net revenues just below last year's levels.

Cost-cutting at many companies helped to support profits, including ASCA. The company realized a record high in its quarterly adjusted EBITDA margins.

Expansion and Regulation Helping Outlook

A few companies said changes in state regulations helped, or were expected to help, gaming revenues.

ASCA and PNK particularly cited the repeal in Missouri's loss limit rule. Last November, a ballot initiative removed a prohibition on buying more than $500 of tokens or chips every 2 hours.

Several of the companies also suggested they were continuing to work on current projects and/or look for opportunities to expand. Such comments were well received not only due to the potential for future growth, but also because it suggests that the companies are adequately capitalized and/or have access to financing.

WMS Realizes Higher Gaming Revenues

Unlike the other companies mentioned in this article, WMS does not operate casinos. Rather, it designs and manufactures gaming machines. Therefore, I wanted to give its earnings report special attention.

The company sold fewer units during its fiscal third-quarter, but was able to realize higher revenues per machine. This led to record gross margins of 64.9% and its 17th quarter of double-digit year-over-year growth.

A key driver for WMS is high-return, high-earnings games. Given the economic backdrop, casinos are more focused on higher earnings games - a focus that helps both casinos and WMS alike.

Positive Surprises Translating Into Higher Forecasts

ASCA, MCRI, PNK and WMS all reported per share earnings that were above expectations. These positive surprises have, in turn, led to higher profit projections - a bullish sign.

ASCA beat by 19 cents. Nearly all of the 13 covering analysts raised their forecasts. The revisions pushed the consensus estimate 38 cents higher to $1.49 per share.

MCRI beat by 7 cents with profits of 6 cents per share. Positive revisions by all 4 covering analysts sent the consensus estimate 12 cents higher to 30 cents per share.

PNK beat by 10 cents with EPS of 8 cents per share. The positive surprise followed 3 previous quarters of disappointments. 11 of the 15 covering analysts raised their full-year projections, sending the consensus estimate 18 cents higher to 11 cents per share.

WMS beat by 6 cents, its 6th consecutive surprise. Nearly all of the 14 covering brokerage analysts raised their fiscal 2009 projections in response, sending the consensus estimate 9 cents higher to $1.53 per share.

MGM reported an adjusted loss of 6 cents per share, 2 cents wider than analysts expected. It's too early to tell what impact the CEO's comments will have on full-year forecasts.

This morning, BYD reported adjusted profits totaling 15 cents per share, 7 cents above the consensus forecast.

ASCA, MCRI, PENN, and WMS are Zacks #2 Rank ("buy") stocks. BYD, MGM and PNK are Zacks #3 Rank ("hold") stocks. All of them are classified in Leisure & Recreation-Gaming.

Related ETFs

There is one gaming ETF, Market Vectors Gaming (BJK). However, as I told Zacks ETF Trader subscribers yesterday, the funds' largest holdings are foreign companies. Therefore, it is not a good way to play the positive momentum in the Leisure & Recreation-Gaming group.

MGM Mirage (MGM) shares slumped at the open on Friday following reports that activist investor Carl Icahn was pressing the distressed gambling giant to restructure its $13.5 billion debt by seeking bankruptcy protection.

Late Thursday, The Wall Street Journal said Icahn and private-equity fund Oaktree Capital Management have been pursuing MGM Mirage to clean up its balance sheet as soon as possible since last month. Citing sources familiar with the matter, the paper said the two investors, who have separately amassed hundreds of millions of dollars in MGM Mirage debt in recent months, stressed bankruptcy as the best option.

Icahn's strategy endangers the majority stake billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian owns in MGM. Kerkorian's 53% stake would amount to nothing if the company files for bankruptcy, giving secured debtholders priority over shareholders.

MGM Mirage, which has been working hard to avoid bankruptcy, has to make a new equity payment on a big Las Vegas project by Friday. Shares of the company were down nearly 13% to $5.15 in morning trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

"MGM" Free Stock Analysis: Buy?
The Las Vegas-based company has suffered over the last year as gaming revenues slumped with fewer gamblers frequenting slot machines in the wake of the global recession. Last week, MGM Mirage borrowed the remaining $842 million in its revolving credit facility and is now negotiating with senior creditors for a covenant waiver or amendment.

The company postponed filing its fourth-quarter and annual report until March 17. MGM Mirage also said its auditor would include an explanatory paragraph raising doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern in the filing.
Aspire Misery Index for the Week Ended, February 6, 2009 (as of Wed. a.m. 2/4/09)

February 4, 2009 ndash; As of Wednesday morning our Misery Index has been accumulating a stream of data points that reflect, in our opinion, further erosion in the U.S. economy. The biggest concern we have, near term, is the labor market which is the key metric for the U.S. economy. After all, consumers represent more than 70% of GDP. The common theme right now is that businesses are reigning in their costs, cutting budgets and jobs and lowering expectations as much as possible right now with hopes that the bars have been set sufficiently low going forward. There is little confidence in the near term that credit markets are going to free up for businesses so they will have to get by on operating cash flow:

Profit Warnings ndash; ADC Telecom, Rockwell Automation, Hologic, CEDC, Perrigo, MDU Resources, Rockwell Collins, Public Service Enterprise, Cameron, Panasonic, Costco, Sarah Lee, Kraft, Thermo Fisher

Job Cuts ndash; Macyrsquo;s (7,000 jobs), Steelcase (300 jobs), Hollis-Eden (20 jobs), TMD Friction Group (140 jobs), Keystone RV Company (350 jobs), Jayco, Inc. (more than 250 jobs), Deere expanded layoffs at its Iowa plant (10 more jobs), Lincoln Electric (10% of work force, or about 900 jobs), Liz Claiborne (about 725 jobs), Capital Group (170 jobs), Pier 1 (10% of employees), Rogers Corp (about 90 jobs), Borders (6 VP jobs and 10 director positions), Windalco (laying off 250), Rockwell Collins (600 jobs), Panasonic (15,000 jobs worldwide)

Unemployment - The ADP National Employment Report showed that employment decreased by 522,000 in January. The number came in better than the expected 659,000 number.

Ratings Cuts ndash; Fitch cut Nova Chemicals, Fitch cut Allstate, Moodyrsquo;s cut Gannett, Samp;P cut American Capital, Samp;P cut Fairchild Semiconductor, Moodyrsquo;s cut MGM Mirage, Moodyrsquo;s cut Mohegan Sun, Fitch downgraded Russia,

The Semiconductor Industry Association said total sales for 2008 were $248.6 billion, compared with $255.6 billion in 2007, down 2.8%. In December, sales were down 22% Y/Y to $17.4 billion.

Closing Doors ndash; TMD Friction closing Virginia plant, Pier 1 is closing a distribution center, Qimonda AG closing U.S. plant, Panasonic is shutting down 27 plants,

Chapter 11 ndash; Spectrum Brands, Maerklin,

Home Prices ndash; Single family home sales fell 23.7% in 2008 on a Y/Y basis while the median price declined by 9.2%. Bloomberg reported that the U.S. housing market lost $3.3 trillion in value in 2008 with the media home price declining 11.6% to $192,119. In the Q4, homeowners lost $1.4 trillion in value.

Homeownership ndash; The Census Bureau said homeownership fell to 67.5% in Q4, down from 67.8% in the same period last year ndash; at 7-year low. The pending U.S. home sales index rose 6.3% in December to 87.7. nbsp;

Construction Spending ndash; Fell for third straight month in December, by 1.4%. Expectations were for a 1.2% decline. For the year, construction spending fell 5.1%. Home construction fell by 27.2% last year.

Auto Industry ndash; Autodata reported that the auto industryrsquo;s sales for January were down 37% on a Y/Y basis to 656,976 ndash; the worst performance since June 1982. On an annually adjusted basis that translates to a rate of 9.57 million. For January (all U.S. sales): Chrysler sales fell 55%; sales at GM fell 48.9%; sales at Suzuki fell 49%; sales at Ford fell 40%; Porsche sales fell 36%; nbsp;Mitsubishi sales fell 34.5%; sales at Toyota fell 31.8% and Nissan fell 29.7%; Honda sales fell 27.9%; Mazda sales fell 27.3%; Audi sales fell 26%; nbsp;BMW sales fell 15.5%; Volkswagen sales fell 11.6%; KIA SALES ROSE 3.5%; SUBARU SALES ROSE 8%; HYUNDAI SALES ROSE 14.3%;

Auto Industry ndash; Chinarsquo;s auto sales are expected to surpass the U.S. auto sales in January.

Banking Industry ndash; the FDIC estimated that losses amongst U.S. banks will likely exceed $40 billion through 2013. 25 banks failed in 2008. 3 banks failed last week alone. Of the 8,500 federally insured banks and thrifts, the FDIC had 171 on its confidential list of troubled institutions as of September 30.

Manufacturing ndash; The Institute for Supply Management said that its U.S. manufacturing index rose to 35.6 in January, up from 32.9 in December. Expectations were for the number to come in at 32. Readings above 50 signal growth.

U.S. Treasury ndash; The Treasury Department said it will need to borrow $493 billion in the first three months of this year ndash; a record amount for the period. This is on top of the $569 billion borrowed in the first fiscal quarter (Oct-Dec). Setting aside Obamarsquo;s $819 billion stimulus package, the Congressional Budget Office projects that this yearrsquo;s deficit will hit $1.19 trillion. nbsp;

div style="text-align: justify;"Keybanc is out with a downgrade on span style="font-weight: bold;"Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN) /spandowngrading the shares to Underweight from Hold after the co announced substantial labor cost cutting initiatives for its Las Vegas properties.br /br /span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;"Firm notes this is the first time they can ever remember this management team taking such drastic measures./span In addition, on a conference call Steve Wynn commented that spending (labor, marketing, promotions, etc.) on the Encore opening was of a magnitude consistent with a boom time economy. These two data points combined with a severe recessionary climate in both of WYNN's markets cause them to lower their 4Q08 earnings estimate and reevaluate their investment opinion on these shares.br /br /Keybanc is lowering 4Q08 EPS estimate to $0.40 from $0.45 (consensus is at $0.52) and believes there are few companies in the gaming sector with near term prospects and catalysts. Longer term, Wynn Resorts has among the best growth pipelines in the industry. Between 150 well located acres in Las Vegas and a 52-acre site on the Cotai strip in Macau, WYNN should be set for the next five to 10 years growth. That being said, the skittish investment climate today does not augur well for any gaming company and they are afraid WYNN's shares will under perform over the near term. The combination of negative group psychology, today's revelations and our new lower than consensus estimates, necessitates us re-instituting an UNDERWEIGHT investment rating on WYNN, with a downside price target of $21.br /br /span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"Notablecalls:/span This stuff does not look good. I think the stock can go to $20 in a jiffy if current sentiment prevails in the n-t. Definitely not saying WYNN is similar to LVS or MGM but I'm just hard pressed to see any meaningful buyers step up around here.br /br /span style="font-weight: bold;"Couple of pts of downside is what I think may be in store for WYNN today./spanbr /br /Oh and btw, Merrill/BAC is lowering their tgt on span style="font-weight: bold;"MGM Mirage (NYSE:MGM) /spanto $5 from $11.br //div

Citigroup is out with a killer call on span style="font-weight: bold;"MGM Mirage (NYSE:MGM) /spaninitiating the stock with a span style="font-weight: bold; color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"Sell rating and a $2.50 tgt./spanbr /div style="text-align: justify;"br /span style="font-weight: bold;"20-30% default rate at CityCenter?/span — Completion of this mega-project could not come at a worse time for MGM. To date, 55% of condo units have been sold, with only 20% deposits being received. Considering estimated spot prices have fallen 33% since the pre-sales (peak), Citi's base case is a 20-30% default rate. Analysis shows if prices fell a further ~15-20% from current levels, the condo projects will be loss making (the Mandarin condos aside).br /br /span style="font-weight: bold;"Las Vegas already on life support —/span With 60% of Las Vegas revenues now coming from non-gaming revenues, weaker discretionary spending has a greater impact on the Strip. As 80% of MGM’s revenues come from Las Vegas, the firm forecasts MGM’s LV Strip EBITDA to decline 32% to $1.1b in 2009E – with an EBITDA margin of 21.5%, 640bps below a 2008E margin of 27.9%.br /br /span style="font-weight: bold;"Dependent on revolver — /spanTo avoid violating its 7.5x Debt to EBITDA covenant, they calculate the group needs to generate $1.84b in 2009 EBITDA, vs. estimate of $1.39b. On Citi's thesis of a 20% condo default rate, they estimate the group will be sitting on $13.8b in debt. At this stage, debt maturity in 2009 and 2010 can be met by MGM’s $7b revolver but they do not rule out assets sales, with Mandalay Bay and Bellagio as potential targets.br /br /span style="font-weight: bold;"Target price at $2.50 —/span Firm ascribes a 7x EBITDA value for the group’s gaming assets (the mean valuation of US players). With $15.4bn in debt (including unconsolidated JVs), they struggle to find any equity value for the group. They are 24% below the Street on 09E EBITDA and 30% below on 10E EBITDA.br /br /span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;"Notablecalls: /spanSo this is why the casino stocks have been so weak of late. span style="font-weight: bold;"I suspect anything above the $7.00 level is an Actionable Short in MGM./spanbr /br /I see the stock trading towards $6 level in the very near term as fear sets in. There is very little MGM can do to better their situation. I don't think they can pull off a deal similar to LVS to keep them afloat around current levels. Best case seems to be a way below mkt offering with huge dilution.br //div
