Markets closed moderately higher yet again this week, as mostly better than expected economic data helped stave off profit taking to leave most indices in positive territory on the week. All told, the Dow ended the week up 0.4%, closing at 9544, up 38 points, bringing its YTD gains to 8.7%. The Nasdaq also gained 0.4% on the week to close at 2028, bringing its yearly gains to 28.6%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.3% and the Russell 2000 lost 0.3%, bringing their yearly gains to 13.9% and 16.1% respectively.

Economic news was in focus yet again this week in the absence of any market driving earnings data, as new home sales for July rose at 9.6%, posting its strongest gains since 2005. This positive development coupled with

McGraw-Hill Sheds 500+ Jobs – Analyst Blog

McGraw-Hill Companies (MHP) recently announced that it has trimmed 550 jobs or roughly 2.5% of its employees as a part of its cost control initiatives amid the economic downturn. In the fiscal year 2008 the company slashed 1,045 positions, eliminating 455 positions in its education division, 340 in financial services division, 210 in information and media division and 40 in general corporate. 

The company will record a $24.3 million pre-tax charge for severance costs in the second quarter of 2009. The company also recorded a reversal of $9.1 million of charges from prior restructuring initiatives. This resulted in a net restructuring pre-tax charge of $15.2 million ($9.7 million after tax charge or $0.03 per share). McGraw-Hill eliminated 340 positions in its education division, 125 in information and media division, and 85 in financial services division.

McGraw-Hill has been hit hard by plunging mortgage-back securities issuance, lower demand for S&P credit ratings
