Despite severe economic turmoil, demand for oil is rising significantly—in fact, it will land somewhere in the range of $150 to $157, according to Roger Wiegand, editor of Trader Tracks. In this exclusive interview with The Energy Report, Wiegand takes a close look at the untamed commodities bull and names some of his favorite buys.

The Energy Report: How does you think oil will play out in current economic scenario?

Roger Wiegand: The big sell-off during the past month or two was triggered when the funds bailed out. Roughly 50% of the CRB—the commodities index—is in oil. When oil moves, it moves the index. The sell-off brought oil down from a high of $147 to roughly $90. It bounced back up to $108 to $110; $108.50 is a good support and resistance level for oil today. Avon Products, Inc. (AVP), a Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stock, has jumped 19.77% since it was last featured on July 8. The company recently easily beat Wall Street estimates for the second quarter by 21.28%.

On July 30, Avon reported its second quarter earnings and saw revenues grow 17% year over year. All six operating segments contributed to the increase. Sales of beauty products were especially strong, jumping 19%.

Latin America and Central & Eastern Europe saw big revenue growth. Latin America revenues rose 27% over the year ago period, with a 30% increase in Brazil, nearly 50% in Venezuela and over 20% in Columbia. Russia led the Central & Eastern European segment, with a revenue gain of 30%.

Massey Energy Co. (MEE) has seen analysts lift full-year 2008 earnings estimates from last month’s projection of $3.21 per share to $3.58. The most accurate forecast is a more bullish $3.70.

An Update on the Company’s Guidance

Massey Energy recently backed its 2008 forecast, noting that it still expects full-year 2008 results, excluding a litigation charge recorded in the second quarter, to be within the ranges of full-year guidance provided previously but with produced tons sold and average price per ton trending toward the lower end of the respective ranges.

The company announced second-quarter results, which included a year-over-year increase of 38% produced coal revenue and an 8% increase in produced coal tons sold, citing the strength of its expanding operations in Central Appalachia as a catalyst. Second-quarter produced coal revenue reached a record $710.3 million, versus the prior-year $516.2 million.
