Atheros Tops in Q2 – Analyst Blog

Atheros (ATHR), a leader in the design of chipsets used in WLAN devices, recently reported revenues of $112.2 million, down 7.6% year over year, but up 27.7% sequentially. Management had earlier guided revenues to increase by 15% - 20% sequentially, but the reported revenues surpassed management’s guidance and consensus estimate of $103.7 million.  Management stated that the better-than-expected results were driven by strong product cycles and market share gains, particularly in the PC and retail router markets. The company also saw strength in notebooks and growth in consumer markets.  Gross margins dipped to 47.4% from 48.1% in the previous quarter and 50.8% in the year-ago quarter, but were in-line with the company’s projection of around 47% - 48%. Marvell Surges on Abnormally High Volume – Zacks Tale of the Tape

Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (MRVL) surged more than 14% today on unusually high volume of 38 million shares. The daily average volume is around 14.8 million shares.

Marvell was recently upgraded to Outperform from Underperform at JMP Securities.

The consensus estimate for the fiscal year ending January 2010 has increased 13 cents, or more than 200%, over the past month to 19 cents per share, as 17 analysts out of 18 boosted projections.

MRVL Cuts 850; Reveals Outlook – Zacks Tale of the Tape

Zacks Market Commentaries (March 6th, 2009) Writes:
Marvell Technology Group Ltd. (MRVL) declared today that it will shed 15% of its workforce, or 850 jobs, to counter the global economic climate.

The company also initiated a companywide salary freeze and suspended bonuses. It aims to save $100 million in operating expenses through cost cuts.

For the fourth quarter, revenue dropped 39% to $512.9 million from $844.7 million in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted EPS was a better-than-expected loss of 1-cent.

Marvell expects earnings of 3 to 5 cents a share, excluding special items for the current quarter.

The company is a Zacks #3 Rank ("Hold").
