Bookkeeping: Reversing the Fertilizer Sales

Trader Mark (July 9th, 2008) Writes:
Long time readers will know this is about the 678,211,121st (give or take) time I've cut back the fertilizer names as they break support at the 50 day moving average, only to reverse on me within days. [Jul 7: Cutting Some Fertilizer Exposure] I even wrote in that entryHistorically you want to buy them when they touch the 50 day moving average since they bounce, but with the market acting so poorly we could get some washout action. So ONCE AGAIN - I am repeating the same pattern, and with egg on face buying back what I sold - luckily I sold right near support so we are paying almost the same price to get the position back. It would of been nice to of bought on yesterday mornings dip but I was greedy ...

Naked Shorting in The Mining Sector

Alex Stanczyk (June 25th, 2008) Writes:

We have heard alot of discussion lately in regards to why the miners could possibly be doing so horribly, when history has shown us that mining stocks should be skyrocketing given the last 8 year bull run in precious metals.

Two words: Naked Shorting

Jim Sinclair has created a movement lately asking to enlist over 200,000 investors, and thousands of mining companies, to put a stop to the criminal activity of Naked Shorting that literally steals money from investors.  You can see more information on Jim Sinclairs initiative here.

One of the best detailed audio explanations of how Naked Shorting works, listen to this audio program.

Hopefully when this all starts coming to light, the brokers who have engaged in this criminal activity will be spending a long time in a cold cell with a large room-mate named Bubba who finds ex-stock brokers attractive.

Chinese steelmaker pays 80% more for iron ore

Tony Sagami (June 24th, 2008) Writes:
Baosteel Group, the largest steelmaker in China, cut a supply deal with Rio Tinto and agreed to an 80% price increase for iron ore. Baosteel will pay Rio Tinto $144.66 a metric ton for iron ore.Demand for iron ore is still very strong and Baosteel must expect it to stay strong for a long time or it wouldn't agree to such a huge price increase.

Barron’s talks up Onyx Pharmaceuticals (ONXX)

Stockmasters Staff (June 23rd, 2008) Writes:
The Masters haven't mentioned Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ONXX) in a long time, since our 100%+ gain with our Master Picks Newsletter.  Barron's is jumping on the bandwagon now that shares are down to $33.  Can Nexavar, Onyx's cancer drug take the company and stock back into the spotlight? Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc's (NASDAQ:ONXX) cancer drug has bright potential in treating several forms of the disease and could raise the biotech company's shares, according to a report on Sunday in Barron's (Paid portion only, thus no link provided). With sales of its drug Nexavar, now approved to treat kidney and liver cancer, expected to hit $1 billion next year, Barron's said one health-care investor is looking for earnings of $1.93 per share, and valuing the stock at $65 to $75 per share....

CNBC Bonus Bucks Trivia: In Cramer’s May 15 Sell Block segment, “The Newest Mortgage Offenders,” why did the Mad Money guru slam IndyMac?

William A. Trent (June 10th, 2008) Writes:

In Cramer’s May 15 Sell Block segment, “The Newest Mortgage Offenders,” why did the Mad Money guru slam IndyMac?

IndyMac’s bad loans are skyrocketing, the company keeps diluting shareholders as shares outstanding continue to build up. And it isn’t even saying it can be profitable this year as it remains heavily exposed to the worst areas of the California market, which make up nearly 50% of its holdings.

At one time, IndyMac (IMB) made my Small Cap Watch List (Track at Marketocracy). But that was a long time ago. These days it doesn’t even make it past my initial screens.

Whatchoo Talk’n ‘Bout, Willis?

Roger Nusbaum (June 6th, 2008) Writes:
I don't actually know how long is now the time to buy financials has been part and parcel of every interview and while I have been underweight for ages, and still am, there is one aspect to this whole meltdown that we need to keep in mind.An aspect that could be relevant especially if one year or two year performance does not matter.Of the larger financial companies, will there be any that fail as a result of the entire event still unwinding? I believe Bear Stearns market cap topped out in the $20 billion range and if that is correct I would not say it was that large.Obviously some folks think there will be failures and with history as a guide there might be one or two which would not be a lot. Point ...

It Just Got Too Busy; Extremely Dull Session Has Some Bullish Action Underneath

Joshua Hayes (May 28th, 2008) Writes:
Weill this has to be quick as the chat room was too busy and I spent a LONG time writing up a nice piece that I would appreciate all members read that are subscribers to at least the silver level. The writeup on the long section will hopefully help some of you to understand why it is 100000x times better to learn to fish than to just take the fish fro free. Now I am dead tired, just updated my orders, and still have to hit my forums. But what I can tell you here is that I had a few very nice stocks bounce off key averages or trendlines that could be very bullish on the short term to possibly the long term. I also loved the fact that the put/call ratio stayed at .94 above the .90 level which signals that most are still wanting to place as many bearish ...
