How to Clean Up Freight? See our New Report “The Good Haul”

Jay Garcilazo (March 15th, 2010) Writes:

Today, we released The Good Haul, a report that highlights how clean freight innovations improve reliability, while also reducing freight-related health and environmental risks.

The U.S. freight system needs to be modernized in a way that reduces environmental impacts. The Good Haul [PDF] profiles 28 projects, programs, and technologies around the U.S. and internationally that do just that. That is, they have simultaneously increased freight reliability while lowering air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

These cases studies include practice changes, like eco-driving, as well as new technologies, like the Port of Virginia’s hybrid diesel locomotive. The case studies also include large, planned freight hub clean up projects, such as the CREATE program in Chicago and the Clean Air Action Plan at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

None of the projects highlighted in The Good Haul are industry standards or have been adopted

Global Trade and Port Data Seasonality

David Taggart (March 15th, 2010) Writes:

One of the many indicators that we track is that of the Los Angeles and Long Beach port data.  Combined these two ports handle almost 50% of the shipping traffic for the United States so they are obvioulsy useful in order to follow global trade.  As you can see in the chart port data s very seasonal.  You can see that total trade (the green line) typically peaks in October and typically bottoms in February.  Sometimes this cycle is off by a month in either direction but for the most part it’s very consistent. Molina Stays at Underperform – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (February 17th, 2010) Writes:
We continue to have an Underperform rating on Molina Healthcare, Inc. (MOH) with a price target of $18.  On Feb 11, 2010 Molina reported disappointing results for the fourth quarter of 2009 as well as fiscal 2009. In the fourth quarter the company suffered a loss of 18 cents per share as against earnings of 55 cents in the year-ago period. The disappointing performance of the company in the quarter was attributable to increased medical care costs, higher utilization and compression of margin related to state budget shortfalls.   The company earned $1.19 per share in 2009 as against $2.15 per share in 2008, down approximately 45%. Molina's profit fell to $30.9 million in fiscal 2009 from $59.6 million in 2008. The decline in profit was attributable to higher operating expenses.  Total expenses for fiscal 2009 climbed approximately 20.3% to $3.61 billion from approximately $3 billion ...

2-17-10 Daily Small Cap Market News and Stock Highlights from SmallCapVoice.com

Stuart Smith (February 17th, 2010) Writes:
Stocks are higher following upbeat earnings from Deere & Co. and a better-than-expected housing report

The report on housing construction and Deere’s results should keep traders focused on the U.S. economy for at least another day. Investors turned their attention from concerns overseas to domestic growth Tuesday, and sent stocks sharply higher.

Deere continued a run of strong earnings reports this week. The heavy equipment maker reported a much better than expected fiscal first-quarter profit, and raised its full-year earnings forecast.

The Commerce Department said construction of homes and apartments rose to an annual rate of 591,000 in January, better than the 580,000 units forecast by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.

The Federal Reserve also issued a promising economic report. The Fed said production at the nation’s factories, mines and utilities rose 0.9 percent last month, the seventh consecutive month of growth. It was also better than the 0.6 percent growth forecast by

Molina Warns of Tough Q4 – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (January 12th, 2010) Writes:

Molina Healthcare, Inc. (MOH) recently announced preliminary (unaudited) results for the fourth quarter as well as for fiscal 2009 (ended December 31). The company expects to suffer losses between 10 cents per share and 25 cents per share in the quarter, which is much worse than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a 27-cent profit. Molina Healthcare now expects to earn between $1.12 and $1.26 in fiscal 2009. The Zacks Consensus Estimate is $1.65 per share.

The poor preliminary results are attributable to significant costs associated with the H1N1 flu. Molina Healthcare intends to announce complete results for the fourth quarter as well as fiscal 2009 on Feb 11, 2010.

Molina Healthcare believes that premium revenues for the quarter will come in at $962 million, thus reflecting an approximate 18% year-over-year increase. Furthermore, revenues for fiscal 2009 are expected to be $3.7 billion, up approximately 19%.

The drastic fall in earnings expectations despite
