Brightpoint Beats Zacks Estimate – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (February 4th, 2010) Writes:
Yesterday, after market close, Brightpoint Inc. (CELL) declared solid financial results for the fourth quarter of 2009. Quarterly GAAP net income was $19.3 million or 24 cents per share compared to a net loss of $343.4 million or $4.35 per share in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted (excluding special items) EPS in the fourth quarter 2009 was 21 cents, significantly above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 15 cents. This was primarily due to effective cost management strategy adopted by management.   Quarterly total revenue of $905.6 billion was down 6% year-over-year but was an improvement of 4% sequentially. Fourth quarter revenue of $905.6 million was also below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $919 million. In the fourth quarter 2009, segment wise, Distribution revenue was $855.6 million, down 4.1% year-over-year....

(CELL), a leading distributor of mobile devices and logistic services to the wireless industry, declared preliminary estimates of its second quarter 2009 financial results. The company’s revenue projection of $722 million - $727 million is significantly below our expectation of $770 million.

We believe the global macro economic slowdown had a major impact on Brightpoint’s operational volume. Management has indicated that the company managed approximately 18 million-19 million mobile devices during the second quarter, which remains almost flat with respect to the previous quarter.

We expected around 22 million of wireless devices during the same quarter prompted by the solid global customer base of the company. Brightpoint has entered into agreements with large telecom carriers and handset makers, such as like Research In Motion (RIMM), HTC Corp, Garmin Ltd (GRMN), ZTE, Nokia (NOK), Verizon Wireless (VZ) and T-Mobile
