Dell (DELL) will release its results on Thursday, after the close, as second-quarter earnings season nears an end. The technology company is projected to have earned 23 cents per share.

Joining Dell will be fellow S&P 500 members Big Lots (BIG), Medtronic (MDT), Novell (NOVL), Staples (SPLS) and Tiffany & Co. (TIF). A total of 76 companies are confirmed to release results.

Given the surprisingly strong July existing home sales report, all eyes will be on Wednesday's new home sales report. Specifically, economists will want to see that new home sales also rose for a fourth consecutive month.

Linktone Ltd. (LTON), a provider of wireless interactive entertainment and advertising in China, reported second quarter 2008 financial results yesterday afternoon. Investors cheered the news by sending LTON shares 20% higher today, or $0.30, to close at $1.80 on five times normal trading volume.

Revenues for the second quarter rose 63% year-over-year to $19.1 million. On a sequential basis, revenues fell 7% from $20.5 million in the first quarter. GAAP net loss swelled to $10.6 million, or 26 cents per ADS, compared to a net loss of $3.2 million, or 13 cents per ADS, for the same period in 2007. Linktone Ltd (LTON) is a provider of wireless interactive entertainment services for mobile telephone users and advertising services to enterprises in China.

The Chinese wireless value-added services market has seen increasingly intense competition and the policy/regulatory changes have a material impact on Linktone’s business. However, the company’s revenue has increased sequentially for three consecutive quarters, which may indicate that the worst time for Linktone has passed. Advertising service business may become another revenue source for the company.

The wireless value-added services business (WVAS) has strong prospects in China. There were about 550 million mobile users in China. The market opportunities remain attractive arising from the launch of 3G wireless services, and eventually mobile television and flash media products.
