Obama Commits to Free Trade Deal With South Korea, But Auto Trade Remains Sticking Point

Money Morning (November 20th, 2009) Writes:

By Bob Blandeburgo Associate Editor Money Morning

On the last leg of his four-nation tour in Asia, U.S. President Barack Obama revived the issue of a still-pending free-trade agreement signed in 2007 with South Korea (KORUS FTA), but an auto trade imbalance will continue to be a major obstacle to Congressional approval.

At a news conference in Seoul, President Obama and Korean President Lee Myung-bak, both showed willingness to renegotiate elements of the deal and to have both countries ratify it as soon as possible.

“I am a strong believer that both countries can benefit from expanding our trade ties,” President Obama said. “I have told President Lee and his team that I am committed to seeing the two countries work together to move this agreement forward.”

Donald Coxe – Investment Recommendations (November 2009)

Prieur du Plessis (November 17th, 2009) Writes:

The November edition of Donald Coxe’s Basic Points research report (subtitled “The Power of Zero”) has just been published. His investment recommendations, as summarized in this document, are listed in the paragraphs below, but I do recommend you also read the full report at the bottom of the post. (Also note that Donald’s weekly webcasts can be accessed from the sidebar of the Investment Postcards site.)

1. Remain underweighted in US equities-as a percentage of total equities within global portfolios, and as a percentage of assets in US balanced portfolios. Underweight US bonds in global portfolios.

The Obama long-term financial projections for the US are high risk and unsustainable. Forthcoming elections-or a currency crisis-could induce some discipline, but within the OECD, the US should probably no longer be accorded top ranking for bonds and stocks.

2. Within the US market, underweight US economy-related

Markets continued their strong performance this week in the absence of any major market driving earnings or economic reports, as the broad based buying that characterized the previous week continued and led to gains in all of the major indices. All told, the Dow added 2.5% on the week, gaining 247 points to close at 10,270, up 17.0% on the year. The Nasdaq posted a 2.6% gain on the week, closing at 2,167 to extend its yearly gains to 37.5%, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 gained 2.3% and 1.0% respectively, bringing their yearly gains to 21.1% and 17.4%.

Equity markets carried the momentum from the previous week’s session, as the thin economic calendar and lack of significant earnings reports provided little incentive for investors to slow their buying activities.
