Earnings Preview for Aug 24 – 28 – Earnings Preview

Dell (DELL) will release its results on Thursday, after the close, as second-quarter earnings season nears an end. The technology company is projected to have earned 23 cents per share.

Joining Dell will be fellow S&P 500 members Big Lots (BIG), Medtronic (MDT), Novell (NOVL), Staples (SPLS) and Tiffany & Co. (TIF). A total of 76 companies are confirmed to release results.

Given the surprisingly strong July existing home sales report, all eyes will be on Wednesday's new home sales report. Specifically, economists will want to see that new home sales also rose for a fourth consecutive month.

Tuesday: August Conference Board consumer confidence, June S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index Wednesday: July durable goods orders, July new home sales, weekly crude inventories Thursday: Preliminary second-quarter GDP, weekly initial jobless claims Friday: July personal income and spending, revised August University of Michigan consumer confidence

Sears Holdings Corporation (SHLD) has enjoyed some impressive earnings estimate increases lately, including sharp gains in just the past week.

< ?DART(15);?> The more than 7% advance in its share price today hasn't been near as dramatic, but is enough to make this retailing staple a Zacks #1 Rank Top Performer for Tuesday.

Volume today is approximately 1.476 million, which is slightly above the average of 1.452 million.

Earnings Estimates Soaring

The current profit consensus for the fiscal year ending January 2010 is $2.06 per share. A month ago, the outlook was only 34 cents, marking a more than 500% improvement as 4 of 6 covering analysts revised higher.

That gain includes an advance of more than 36% in just the past 7 days.

Meanwhile, expectations for next fiscal year, ending January 2011, are also on the rise. Estimates are higher

Top Performer for Monday: Kirkland’s (KIRK) – Zacks #1 Rank Top Performers

Shares of Kirkland's, Inc. (KIRK) are surging more than 14% today on higher-than-normal volume of 634,000. On average, the company's volume is about 555,000.

< ?DART(15);?> Earnings estimates for this specialty retailer of home decor have also been jumping lately after a respectable fiscal first-quarter performance on May 21.

There are 224 stocks on today's Zacks #1 Rank List, and 41 of them are retail related. However, KIRK is the only company from the retail-home furnishings industry.

Estimates Shooting Dramatically Higher

There are only 2 analysts covering KIRK right now, but they have both raised estimates for the year ending January 2010 in the past 30 days. As a result, the consensus has jumped more than 78% to 82 cents from 46 cents.

That advance includes a sharp gain of more than 36% from 60 cents in the past 7 days.
