Five S&P 500 companies are confirmed to report: Constellation Brands (STZ), Darden Restaurants (DRI), Jabil Circuit (JBL), Nike (NKE) and Walgreen (WAG). A total of 27 companies are on the calendar.

We will get another look at initial third-quarter results with 11 S&P 500 companies reporting. Included in this group are AutoZone (AZO), Bed, Bath & Beyond (BBBY), General Mills (GIS), KB Home (KBH), Lennar (LEN) and Paychex (PAYX). A total of 33 companies are on the calendar.

The Fed will hold a 2-day meeting starting on Tuesday. No change in rates is expected at either this or the November meeting. Traders will be looking for insight about the pace of recovery and updates on the various bailout programs.

In addition to the Fed meeting, the economic calendar features August Leading Indicators and home sales data.

The financial crisis has set a lot of records so far; it's certainly the worst US banking crisis of my lifetime. Some, as suggested by the above quote, see such crises as unique events; each one is singular and there's not much to be learned about how to handle one from looking at past crises. For example, there's no precedent that I know of for a banking crisis involves the failure of the biggest counterparties for credit default swaps.

Stocks fell for a second session in a row, extending a global slide, as waning optimism about an economic recovery painted a bearish picture.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which had fallen 187 points on Monday, slipped another 107 points and gave back two weeks of gains as investors sold off stocks.  A strong report on housing starts provided some fillip early in the session but stocks pared gains as the Federal Reserve reported a 1.1% decline in industrial production and concerns about the economy resurfaced.  The S&P 500 also recorded its second consecutive decline, falling 1.3% and the Nasdaq was off 1.1%.  Volume on the NYSE remained modest with only 1.2 billion shares exchanging hands and declining shares outpaced advancing issues by a seven-to-three margin.
